Your Yes Girl

Shock was apparent on his face, caught off guard by her tone. Then, he realized what it all sounded like, then he laughs and shakes his head. “No, no I’m like 100 pounds wet, I couldn’t break someone’s arm. Or my own, that’d just be dumb. I was just dared to jump from a… high place..? And I wanted to know the risks.”

“Oh. Oh, thank god.” Hailee took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly with a smile. “Exactly how high is this place? Is it like a roof situation?” She titled her head as she watched him, trying to figure out what was going on in his head..something she always tried to do but never could. 

“Eh, I don’t mind. I probably needed the exercise. I spent most of my weekend on my ass trying to keep my attention on my English assignment, which was a way harder task than it should’ve been,” Isaiah joked, grinning as he tucked the notebook he had in his grip under his arm. “But, ah, I was actually wondering what you’re doing on Friday? Like, directly after school.”

“English? You know that’s one of my things, right? Next time just ask me.” She teased back, but being very serious at the same time. She helped a lot of people with English assignments and with him, at least she would like doing it. “Friday?” she repeated, eyebrows raising slightly. Hailee knew she shouldn’t have but she got excited. She could feel her heart beat start to speed up but she did everything in her power to try and remain calm. “I don’t think I’m doing anything. Why? What’s up?”

“Water!” Clarissa exclaimed suddenly, reaching for her bag. “I can help with that.” She quickly retrieved an unopened bottled water and held it out too the girl with a grin.

The yell was piercing, not because the girls voice was, mostly because Hailee’s head felt like it was going to explode. “You have water?” She stared as the girl pulled out an unopened bottle of water, reaching for it like it was the last scrap of food on earth and she was starving. “Thank you. You are an angel.”

“Hail, hey — wait up,” Isaiah called out when he spotted her familiar head of auburn hair. He jogged to catch up, sidling up beside her as they walked. It was a relief to see her, in all honesty. He had been asking people all day to help with Friday’s recycling drive and it was proving difficult to find anyone willing to give up part of their afternoon to haul used plastic around. “Dude, I’ve been looking all over for you. Never knew you could be so elusive.”

The redhead paused when she heard someone calling her name, turning slightly to watch as Isaiah ran over to her. She smiled widely up at him, taking her headphones out and tucking her phone away. “You’ve been looking for me? You know you could have texted me, I could have come to you instead of you having to search for me.” She laughed lightly, easily falling into step with him. “What’s up?”

while the other girl changed, eli took the time to grab two glasses from her mini bar beside her bed where she usually kept the water in case she got thirsty over night; along with the small bucket of ice which she almost proudly extended over right after hailee mentioned it. “already ahead of you,” she commented with a small smile, opening up the bottle and pouring them both the wine before she settled a little more comfortably on her bed. “- okay, now speak.” she finally stated, taking a sip. 

Hailee smiled and tucked the bottle into the bucket of ice, placing the whole thing back onto the floor as she held onto her first glass. She sipped her wine and took a deep breath before speaking. “It’s this guy. I really like him, Eli, like more than I’ve liked anyone before but he doesn’t see me that way. And I know he doesn’t,” she took another sip of her wine, already feeling herself getting more upset over someone who probably didn’t spare her a second thought. “It’s so pathetic because I know he’s probably into so many other people and I don’t know why I think he could ever like me, I mean, I’m me, you know? I know it’s not going to happen, but I want it to so badly.” She could feel herself practically on the verge of tears which made everything worse. “Anyway, I saw him at a party with someone else and...I am so pathetic.”

Alice sighed absently as she flipped through the old vinyls, feeling a little helpless in her search for the perfect gift. Her dad’s birthday was coming up that weekend and while she usually had a present for anyone’s birthday weeks in advance, she found herself struggling this time around. She was annoyed with herself for having such a hard time with it, and also a little annoyed with her dad for turning a year older in the first place. She looked over at Hailee who stood a little way’s away, then walked over to join her. “I’m officially stumped,” she announced. “At this rate, all he’s going to get is a giftcard to Sherper’s and a handwritten promise to go fishing with him. That’s not too bad, right?”

Hailee perused the vinyls, not paying much attention to any of the titles she was reading. They weren’t there for themselves, instead, they were on a mission to find Alice something for her dad’s birthday. She looked over at Alice when she spoke, giving her a small encouraging smile. “Don’t worry, if anyone can find the perfect gift it’s you. And besides, I don’t think your dad would mind too much if you got him a gift card and went fishing. In fact, he might love that.”

“- what do you mean?” eli happily (per usual) chipped in, looking over at her friend from her locker. “oh, you mean this merging thing? i don’t see anything wrong with it. god knows those kids suffered through horrible education back there, at least now they got a shot to make something out of themselves.” 

“Right, and I get that, Northlake is by far a better school, but it just means there are more people who are trying to be valedictorian and there can only be one of those, and that’s supposed to be me.” Hailee took a deep breath, staring at her B grade like it was insulting her. “I’ve never gotten a B before, Eli, what am I supposed to do with this?”

Amelia had been impressed with the B she got on her project, not normally doing well when it came to projects. She noticed the girl beside her however, seem frustrated with her mark, and she turned to her, “Project mark that bad? I’ve never been good at projects –” she said, not sure if she was truly being helpful or not. She had seen the girl around since arriving at Northlake in December, and she seemed to be one of the smarter people.  Then again, Amelia didn’t notice much of the cliques, so she wasn’t a good judge over who was smart and who wasn’t.

“I got a B.” Hailee held hers up to show the mark, staring at it as though it had hurt her in some way. “I never get a B.” She lowered her hand with a sigh. “I think she’s been on edge since it was announced Southbank students would be coming here, otherwise I have no idea why she would grade so harshly.”

The conjunction of the two high schools were his biggest nightmare, aware that he wouldn’t have as much alone time as before. It seemed as if, wherever he would go, someone would be occupying his space already. Leaning over the desk, icy blue orbs remained trained on the sketch before him. “Don’t repeat that twice, it might just come true.” He huffs, tapping the pencil against the table’s surface lightly. “It’s like the jungle out there.”

Hailee groaned, he was right. Odds were, they were jinxed now because she’d said that. “You’re so right. Fuck.” She looked around, hoping that, if no one else heard what she said, everything would be fine. “Jungle is one way to describe it.”

“True, but just because they think it doesn’t make them so,” she argued before smiling. “I mean, I have a big head at times, but I know I’m not better than you. You’re far smarter and prettier than me.”

“What?” Hailee narrowed her eyes at Kenzie, a look of disbelief covering her features. “Are you kidding? No way. We’re definitely equally smart and, if anything, you’re way prettier than I am.”

Felix frowns in thought as he takes his normal seat, thinking about what she said. He was meant to have brought work he was dangerously close to the deadline of, but it was pretty clear on his face that his mind was elsewhere. He felt his own forearm over his shirt, sizing up his bones to figure out which one was smaller. The one on the pinkie’s side, maybe? “So it’d be kinda easy then, even just for like a fracture? Interesting.”

Her eyes fell to his hands as he started to feel his arm, the concern about this conversation growing quickly. “No, not interesting, not okay. Please do not tell me you’re trying to figure out how to break someone’s arm...or your own arm? Do not do that, Felix.”

“I’ll have to keep that in mind. Smartest person in school they should be doing pretty well.” Miles said with a shrug. “That’s how I thought their gig was, too. Guess I was completely wrong. Not that I’d ever consider it, but if I was a cop I’d at least take the job seriously.” Digging in his pocket for his house key, he unlocked the door and held it open behind him for her. “That’s good thinking. Are you thinking sweet or savory?” Miles asked before walking toward the kitchen. 

“Yeah..” she trailed off, as that hadn’t been exactly what she’d had in mind but he had a point. She was the right person to help them all out with grades. “I can agree with that. I don’t want to be a cop but if I were to do it, I’d at least do it right and not just use it to get drugs or do illegal things and get away with it.” She grabbed onto the door as she followed him into his house. “Oh, can we start savory and go from there?” Hailee asked as she closed the door behind her and walked behind him towards the kitchen.

“Of course I try to beat you, you’re the only one I haven’t beat yet,” Kenneth said, rolling his eyes before leaning against the wall he was next to. He remembers back in middle school when he used to think Hailee would have been perfect for him. However, people change and Kenneth never thought he’d make it far enough to find himself in a relationship. Not to mention, he never thought about making it to this year and he’d had to break someone’s heart like that. He still thinks about her sometimes, a bittersweet feeling following. “They’re smart enough not to make a mistake like that, give yourself a little credit. You worked hard to be captain- that’s a spot you deserve.”

She raised her eyebrow with a smirk. “Is that so? Well, maybe one day you will beat me and then you’ll have to join.” She laughed then, looking down at the ground briefly before glancing back up at him. She shrugged, trying to brush off the compliment again. She really wasn’t good at that, she always tried to convince everyone else she didn’t deserve it. “Fine. Let’s say I deserve it and move on, okay?”
