I saw an interview of Isabel Allende (one of my favorite writers) yesterday talking about she used to send letters to her mother and ever since she passed, she stopped sending letters overall and it has changed the way she moves through her life.
She mentioned how she would spend her days paying lots of attention to every single detail so she would have exciting things to write about in those letters at night. Everything that happened mattered because she needed to collect those events to write them. And now that she doesn't anymore, her days are much faster, things are just passing by and she's in automatic mode to which I think almost everyone can relate.
And I'm not negating the fact that it's a horribly sad and nostalgic story but it inspired me to try to adopt this mindset somehow? I know I cannot commit to writing letters regulary because it's true that people struggle to keep up (me included). But I want to try to be more conscious about the small things happening during my day and keep it tracked to share with others, to observe and be more aware of how the world is moving around me, because that is truly how life becomes interesting. And I hope my friends and family do the same with me and feel safe to share small details of their days.
It almost feels utopian to try to wish for slowness in our current times but I will continue my search for something that gives me this feeling. Nothing will compare to writing letters but at the end of the day we have our feelings and our thoughts with us and that is always something worth communicating.
Anyways I hope we all find the privilege to have slow days and pay attention today and if not, soon β€οΈ
