Being in my 20s I’ve wondered plenty of times when it became legal for me to do most of the things I’ve done in my adult life like: have a credit card and bank account in my name, live with my partner out of wedlock, buy my own car, take out my own loans, etc. And I never considered so many of the rights I have weren’t available to my great-grandmother.
And then, honestly, I never even considered those things could be taken from me until the Handmaid’s Tale came out and the entire premise of the show was women lost their rights slowly and then all at once.
I know, I know, I’m showing my white girl, US citizen privilege here. But honestly. I never considered these rights to be so new- only a few generations old. And I never considered how easily they could be lost.
Regardless of your option of RBG (she was far from perfect) you have to admit she helped pull women so far closer to equality than ever before. And it’s important to recognize that if we want to preserve our rights and keep pushing forward to be even more inclusive than RBG we have to wake up and reckon with the reality of not just our generation, but generations past and future. We can’t take our rights for granted and we can’t ignore those who are still suffering because they’re not afforded the same privilege as us.
