idk if it's just that her solo this year didn't actually showcase what she can do or if she's genuinely had some sort of insane transformation since the season ended, but everleigh mather has gotten SO good recently
Asking all my Canadians, where are you ordering costumes from nowadays? Shipping, conversion, and customs for Weissman and Revolution have gotten WAY too expensive, and most stuff from Layla's and Stardom is ugly.
I feel your pain! Those 2 are hella expensive for Canadians nowadays, I find some good stuff on stardom now and then but yeah layla's is a joke. This ended up long so my recs are under the cut:
For s/d/t we find a lot of really gorgeous and good-quality custom and semi-custom costumes being resold on facebook for under ~$150! Join "custom costume resale - Canada" and "dance costume resale - Canada" as well as any specific provincial groups. Like I'm even in an Ontario resale group even though I don't live in Ontario, most people will still sell to you if you're willing to pay shipping yourself, which is typically an extra 20-30$ unless it's a big bulky costume.
We've managed to strike up a friendship with a studio in another province who does all custom costumes for all their elite routines (don't ask me how they afford it) and they give us first dibs at resale every summer before they list their costumes publicly. We've gotten some good second-hand custom group costumes that way at a great price.
Jazzamatazz is great for groups, within their performance collection catalogue, you can order any of the designs done in any of the fabrics from the other designs. So there's a lot of room to semi-customize what you want. The piss-off is they do a 3 per colour minimum. Sometimes you can find a hidden gem in their spotlight and express collections but I find most of that pretty ugly.
Hamilton's is good for really specific themed costumes. Like I did an Italian themed group last year and we ordered from there.
Otherwise we mostly just use amazon, aliexpress, or just basics from various dancewear shops that we add stones and appliques to. A lot of my soloists do brand new custom costumes with a designer of their choice, but I never ask that from my dancers in groups because I don't know everyone's financial situation and I don't wanna put that extra stress onto families.

oh for sure, could have worded that better but definitely meant just not competing against the kids. I totally agree and love when comps have an open/adult division!
yeah i get what you mean, there's no reason for a 21 year old and a 15 year old to be in the same division
is this a safe space to say i dont think college students should be competing at these comps at all⦠i feel like 19 is a good age cutoff because it accounts for kids who may have been held back a year or two and are still in high school, but college sophomores winning the senior title always rubs me the wrong way. i guess that would be hard to regulate though
I don't mind them competing IF they're in a separate category. Even 19 is pretty rare in my area, but I do understand the reasoning for kids on a 5-year track in high school, or taking a gap year. But by age 20 they should be in an adult category for sure.
Like a lot of comps in my area do 19+ as a separate division, you get adjudication and overalls in that age group if there's enough entries, but you can't be considered for special awards, scholarships, grand overalls, or be eligible to recompete in finals. I feel like that's a good way of doing it, so the adults still can get onstage and get feedback, but they don't get to take any of the big recognitions away from the kids.
