PP doesn't even require musical theatre to have songs from musicals... ik they're trying to be edgy or revolutionary or whatever but come on, that's kinda the point of the genre
Do regular comps require it? I’ve honestly never noticed but typically it’s a given the song is from a musical lol. I don’t think I’ve ever seen in the requirements it must be from a musical of some sort
I looked at a bunch of competitions' descriptions of musical theater
Comps whose definition does say that the song has to be from a musical (broadway/movie/tv): BTF, Radix, Ovation, Hall of Fame, Kar, In10sity, Starquest, Revel
Competitions that do not say that: Press Play, Velocity, Starpower, Streetz, Adrenaline (some of these say "consists of Broadway dance styles" but not specifically music)
Example of a piece that perfectly fits the musical theatre category without using a song from a musical:
the reading comprehension in that sub is not it...
I had to laugh when I saw the post about “how did Regan get a Ricky solo????” Like the people on that sub genuinely JUST discovered what outside choreo is
A video of Eva Alley doing made in Japan just came up on my fyp and I had to do a double take cause wdym she’s not 8 years old anymore???
Do you have any examples of studios that do that?
oh idk of any well-known studios by name, but I'm in a dance teacher discussion group on facebook and it came up there!

No allowing kids to pick their own duo partners is crazy, I've been in the same situation. I get that it's nice and fun for them to dance with their friends or whatever. But when advanced level, 4 foot-tall, grounded and artistic contemporary queen Suzy demands to do a duet with 5-foot pre-competitive sharp and sassy jazz queen Everleigh-Meigh what the hell am I going to come up with for them?!
oof yeah I've had to choreograph duets and trios like that at my original studio years ago, it's rough. those always end up being the pieces where you just have to bear down and put together something that looks presentable on stage, rather than the ones that are this whole artistic journey where you get to support and guide the dancers through personal development. and obviously the latter is more enjoyable and beneficial for everyone involved, but a lot of dancers (understandably, because they are children) and parents don't understand that.
I just found out that at some studios parents/kids get to pick their own songs for solo/duet/trios and I think working at a studio like that would be my absolute worst nightmare
Thoughts on dances to religious music or about religion? Mather has a mini group this season with pews...
I haven't seen that group from Mather so I can't speak to that specifically, but in general I think the choreographer/studio owner should always get written consent from parents of all dancers involved in religious-themed dances. It definitely can be done in a tasteful, appropriate way, but I think it's inappropriate to spring that on your dancers as a mandatory dance.
fully 100% support that youtube couple's choice to abort their unborn baby with trisomy 21 in case anyone was wondering. been seeing so many mind-numbing, ignorant, low-intellect, bible-thumping posts about I just thought I'd put it out there.
kennedy m has a tw solo too, the one she did at 24seven this weekend.
she posted that jaycee did the choreography for that solo
i really it was jaycee choreo??
imagine travelling back in time and telling your 2016 self that travis wall choreo and jaycee wilkins choreo are now indistinguishable from one another

why’d I just see a tik tok of all my fav retired comp kids stoned out of their minds in a froyo shop 😭😭
that electric chair dance going viral in ig where the ONE black dancer in the group is portraying the wrongly accused criminal.... I'm sorry, the dancers are insanely talented, but so not an appropriate concept for teens to be portraying at a comp full of children.
sooo crazy to me when people say molly's choreo doesn't go with the music, like some people truly cannot hear, its nuts 😭😭😭
Fever?
I know people love Fever but personally I had a HORRIBLE experience there. The host had his young son handing out awards late at night, and paused the awards session to openly scold his son over the microphone for handing out an incorrect medal. It was extremely uncomfortable and off-putting.
Where would you put some of the more popular Canadian competitions compared to the US ones in terms of difficulty? For example, I always think of BTF, NYCDA, Press Play, etc as advanced; Starpower etc as intermediate, and then those tiny ones as beginner. Are there any Canadian ones that compare to BTF? Or are they more in the middle, because I would consider On the Floor, View, TKO, as more advanced than Starpower but not as advanced as BTF for example
Yeah I agree with you for sure, I would say those 3 you named are among the most "prestigious" Canadian comps, but still not at the same calibre as BTF/NYCDA, etc. I also might put Elite in that same group of high-level Canadian comps, but I think they've gone downhill in the past few years, a lot of favoritism issues.

You’re atheist but attend a Christian school!?!?!
yeah I’m in a professional program there so it’s not unusual for me to be secular. Vast majority of their regular undergrads are Christian but they also offer a few direct-career degrees and those cohorts are a pretty mixed bag in terms of religion. I don’t study religion or attend any religious services or clubs at my school, I’m just there to get the degree.
