i think it depends on the day! when he was younger, he definitely felt a lot more connected to his heritage, but as he grew up and got bullied more for being an immigrant and not being purely american, he began to distance himself from his home country. he keeps up with traditions and popular cultural parts of germany, but he pulls away from it closer to zero day. he doesn’t want to be labeled as a foreigner or anything that would ‘taint’ his image in the press after the shooting.

some parts of growing up absolutely had an impact on how he views his background (like parent-teacher conferences when he still had to act as a translator for his parents and kids at school making fun of him and his parents for being different). also, his brother might have something to do with it. andre’s brother is probably in the military (or at least that’s where i believe he is as it would explain andre’s military fixation and how he rarely sees his brother), and andre sees him being a ‘proud american’ and wants to share that sentiment.
