Dylann Storm Roof was born on April 3rd, 1994 in Columbia, South Carolina. His parents are Franklin Roof and Amelia Roof, but they were divorced and his father later had a relationship with a woman named Paige Mann, but they are also no longer together. They divorced around 2008, and in court documents, it claims there was physical and verbal abuse involved. He has a sister named Morgan and another sister named Amber. He lived in South Carolina but for a bit, he lived in the Florida keys from 2005 to 2008. His home life seemed rather chaotic. As he grew up, he began to show signs of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). He was very obsessive over his looks. He was described as very shy. He had struggles in his studies and did not do very well in school. He often changed schools and was forced to repeat the 9th grade. At a point, he stopped going to school, making him a dropout. Roof began smoking weed in middle school. He would not end up getting a job and he also did not have a license. In 2012, he read about the murder of Trayvon Martin. This led to him getting into white supremacy. Being alone most of the time, not attending school, obviously Dylann used the internet very often. In 2015, specifically February 9th, Dylann gained ownership of the domain “lastrhodesian.com” ; this website later contained his manifesto and a lot of photos.

He lived in several different places, usually with his mother and father. He cut off his stepmother fully, and did not attend Ambers wedding. He also was living with a few different friends around the time of the shooting. He continued substance abuse for this part of his life.

Previously, Dylann had been arrested. He was arrested for drug possession, for having medication that he was not prescribed on his persons in february of 2015. He was also arrested in April of 2015 for trespassing. In March of 2015, he was questioned for loitering in his car. He was in possession of a forearm grip for an AR-15 and 6 magazines, unloaded. He was not detained, simply questioned.

Apparebtly for his 21st birthday, his father gave him money to purchase q gun with. he purchased a .45-caliber pistol. this was later used in his attack. Dylann had made a choosing threat against the college of Charleston, but that did not work out.

"I don't think the church was his primary target because he told us he was going for the school. But I think he couldn't get into [sic] the school because of the security ... so I think he just settled for the church.”

June 17, 2015:

Dylann Roof entered the church and asked for a specific male, Clementa Pinckney. He then sat next to this male. Eventually, the bible study went i9nto a prayer. He then stood up and began to shoot. He removed his weapon from a fanny pack. He spewed racist insults and kept shooting. Dylann eventually approached a woman named polly shepard as she prayed.

DR: “Did i shoot you yet?”

PS: “no”

DR: “Good, 'cause we need someone to survive, because I'm gonna shoot myself, and you'll be the only survivor.”

Apparently then, Roof turned the gun ytohid own head, but he was out of bulletd. He then exited the church. that was according to a survivor, Kevin Singleton. The shooting lasted 6 minutes. 9 total victims were killed. He killed at close range, with multiple gunshot wounds to each victim.
