I love my early morning walks. This is often when I get inspiration for some of the skies I paint. Whenever I spend time looking at cloud shapes and colours in skies, I try to break them down into a sequence of washes. Princes Street, Edinburgh This original watercolour is based on reference gathered one winter 30 years ago. It’s an exercise in building up subtle clean washes of colour to create a cityscape that has depth, mood and atmosphere. The Derelict after John Singer Sargent. Sargent’s was an oil painting of an abandoned ship which he would have seen on one of his Atlantic crossings. This is an original watercolour which began as a watercolour demonstration last week. I managed to finish it off today.
