Most of the time, that "someone" was Hawke himself.
And he didn’t tag along to do everything on his own, but rather for support. He let Marwen speak and act just as she had intended. He could offer advice, but the final word always belonged to the elf.
Because she had a voice and the right to choose. And Hawke respected that right.
This tangled Marwen’s thoughts even more. She was running out of arguments to cling to, running out of ways to remain a block of ice in the dead of July heat.
"Garrett…?"
She trailed off, catching the faint smile on his face. She forgot what she had wanted to say. Her mind was fighting with its last ounce of strength, demanding that she keep her distance.
People couldn't be trusted. No matter how kind they seemed.
But her heart insisted — Hawke could be.
"If we assume that I give in… what happens then?"
His smile flickered for a moment, then vanished. It was too serious a matter to brush off with a joke.
"I always looked at my parents and thought they were incredibly lucky. They faced every hardship together, protected each other, and if one stumbled, the other was always there to help them up. I want the same thing, Marwen. I want to know that someone is waiting for me at home, and if they aren't waiting, it's because they are fighting by my side. I’m not looking for a fleeting whim; I want a partnership. A long and honest one."
"Do you think I fit the part?" She traced her fingers along her long ear.
"Yes."
Firm and brief.
And once again, she had no desire to argue.
Even though the facts were hitting her like a sudden snowfall.
He was no longer a Ferelden refugee with no standing in a city of stone. Hawke had won his name, forged it in a fiery furnace of steel and blood. People looked up to him; people listened to him.
Marwen felt like an outsider in this whirlwind of complex choices and intricate rules.
Tears welled up in her eyes. It was terrifying to agree, and even worse to stay silent.
"If I refuse, will you accept my choice?"

The truth. Bitter, but vital.
"I want long and honest, too," she said, her voice no louder than the crackle of a candle, yet striking straight to the heart.
She found the strength not to look away. To look straight at him.

Hawke sat up, ignoring her protest, ignoring the pain and the fact that it might make things worse. None of that seemed as important as Marwen opening up to him.
Even if he couldn't straighten up fully and sat hunched over, he was still taller.
Yet he looked at her as an equal — as someone who offers a choice and accepts it, regardless of his own desires.
"I promise not to break your trust."
She wanted to say that one doesn't make promises like that, but decided it was something they both needed. Words to help take that first step toward one another.
She placed her palm against his stubbly cheek. Traced his cheekbone with her thumb.
"I believe you."
I wrote the best scene of my entire writing career and now I want to cry and hide in a corner because it's too good, but no one will see it.
I want lots of beautiful stones, so that everything would be covered in stones, so that the world would become stone
