Half-Way Through
I haven’t been very good at keeping up my blog throughout my time as a practicing Norman Mailer Fellow. Posting each day didn’t strike me to be that ambitious, but daily life here in Salt Lake City has me bustling like an undergraduate on his first day of class.
I have been truly inspired by the people I’ve met here, espcially those in my non-fiction workshop. I feel humbled to read such talented work, even in the draft stages that I see. It makes me feel as if I should be doing much more creative work, yet, I always seem to be thinking and writing like an academic. My project is creative in its own way, but it’s an idea rather than the writing that I emphasize. The art of simple storytelling makes my colleagues’ work so great. The beauty of the prose is what their work is all about.
He's carrying a gun. People with guns are usually the enemy in my book.

What you do may seem unimportant, but it is very important that you do it.

First Workshop
This is what I'm here for, but I felt a bit out-of-place, like a Mormon in a Catholic church.
I was one of three people who were the subjects of today's workshop. The other two were non-fiction narratives that were both well written and polished. Then, my weird prospectus for an academic DH project. The first two hours seemed productive when we were discussing the others' contributions, but it's like they didn't know what to say about mine. That said, I think I received some good feedback — as much as I could get, really. I have some revision to do, and some more research. I'm not sure what I'm going to have for next Tuesday. I meet with our workshop leader on Friday, so I think he'll offer some direction.
Monday: Get Busy
After breakfast, another great run, and my workout (this important part of my routine established), I got to work.

From my run this morning.
First Trail Run!
Holy crap. I just had the best run of my life — or at least one of the best. I'm just sorry I didn't have a camera.
Back behind the university, the Utah Valley ends and the mountains begin. The person who checked me in yesterday the University Guest House said I'd find many trails to run on off Red Butte Canyon Road. She wasn't kidding. Check the link above to the Guest House to see.
Travel Day
I began my travels to Salt Lake City with a run.
Heather was down for the weekend, and since my flight wasn't until 3:15, we were able to squeeze in eight miles. It was good to catch up. We both have to begin training soon for our marathon this fall. I don't know; today's eight was tough.
Autumn had some bagels for us when I returned from my run, and she and I were able to spend the morning together before my departure. While I love getting out of Macon, I will miss my wife. Fortunately, technology keeps us close.
The only things I’ve ever learned have been the things I’ve discovered for myself.

Do not breed within you any indolent wishes of learning dropping down from heaven into your bosoms while you slumber. Stir yourselves up with a productive desire for wisdom. By your increasing and undaunted labors, make trial of what you can do, put to the test how much you are capable of. Ply your gifts and energies in all possible directions. Stir your minds up, enkindle that the divinity that fills you. If you take this course of action (poets came to it by nature, as it happens) you too will engender God-inspired marvels of your own, and surprise yourselves in the doing of it.
Giambattista Vico, 1732
Rose: Doctor, they have guns.
The Doctor: And I haven’t. That makes me a better person, don’t you think?
