Hey hi hello, we wanted to make a post that talks a bit about terms we've been using for a good while now (both so we can make some edits on Pluralpedia and so we can just, get it out there I guess?)

Here goes:

Sector: March 2018

According to an archive of an old blog (link), we've been using the term "sector" as "an arbitrary support group of headmates with a fixed number" since March 29th, 2018:

This early version of the usage was intended to create workable sections of the system in order to manage our accounts on social media better, but eventually became a way for us to group people who formed around the same time or shared a source together, while giving headmates someone they could talk to if needed (who was designated as the Sector Leader)

Leader (+variants): September 2018

Speaking of leaders, we've been using that term in our system since at least September 2018, according to another blog archive (link)

While we don't have exact proof of using specific variants like "layer leader" or "subsystem leader," that was the way that we used those terms in practice, as implied by the blog post discussing the leaders of our new layers. I (Kam) had layer leader, sector leader, and subsystem leader as my internal roles, to put down a few of the ones we used

Front-locked: September 2018

Related to that last one, further down in that post we also use the term front-locked:

Our usage here was much closer to frontstuck though, so this was just a synonym of that rather than its own term

Bitch (aka Lead Bitch): December 2018

Another term that came up recently in some discussions of ours, we've been using the term Lead Bitch as a role since as least December of 2018:

This isn't something we particularly care about, just funny to see it around honestly- it was a mostly joking role that HABIT gave himself, though for a while the things he did were pretty similar to what the role on Pluralpedia mentions

Fractal: Describing a system whose members are constantly changing and complex, typically by having parts or fragments moved around often

Meanings

The colors and symbol were chosen based on our own experiences, and are inspired by our system's shards/fragments. Some tweaks were made to make them look more aesthetically pleasing together

Descriptions

A flag with 5 horizontal stripes and a symbol/drawing in the middle. From top to bottom the stripes are a bright blue-green, a medium teal, blue, slightly darker blue, and cerulean. The symbol in the middle consists of 3 diamond shapes of different colors, arranged in different orientations. The leftmost is large and upright, and is a very desaturated but warm purple. Next to it is another that's smaller and tilted about 45 degrees to the right, which is a desaturated but more cool purple. Below that is one tilted so that it's nearly horizontal, and is a slightly more saturated blue. Each diamond is split into four faces like a gem, with one being a lighter color to act as a highlight, two being the normal color of the diamond, and one being a darker shade to act as a shadow. They're all outlined in a very dark blue.

The no symbol version doesn't have the gems in the middle, and the square versions are just squared off instead of rectangular.

Idiosynthing: The action of quickly adopting personality traits from others in such a way that it causes major, noticeable (to yourself or others) changes to your own personality, mannerisms, way of talking, etc. Often temporary, but can be permanent. Created with people with BPD and autism in mind, but can be used by anyone that feels like they experience it

Idiosynth:

The verb describing this action; to idiosynth

The noun to describe who you're masking with; an idiosynth

May also be shortened to "synthing" or "to synth." "Idios" for the noun form might be used as well, though unfortunately it's very close to the term "idiot" and may be misunderstood

Pronounced id-ee-oh-sinth or eed-ee-oh-sinth, either is fine

Example

Say that you as a person are typically a timid, self-deprecating person. You often avoid others and feel bad about the things you do. Most of your friends know this about you, and can recognize when you're feeling especially down, as you tend to isolate yourself.

Those friends invite you to a movie night, and your brain instantly connects with one of the characters in movie. They're incredibly charismatic, bubbly, friendly, and confident. While you watch the movie, part of you changes, and afterwards you find yourself talking more like that character, growing more confident in yourself, and becoming less timid. You put more time into being the first one to message your friends or invite them to things; you find yourself having less desire to be alone for a time.

A few weeks later, you've started shedding these traits and going back to your "usual self," as those self-deprecating thoughts creep back in and you find yourself taking more and more time to be alone. You've stopped engaging with that movie and the fandom around it, which has dried up your mind's immediate interest in that character, and you find yourself no longer acting the same way as them.

That's the kind of experience this term is describing: taking on traits that others have to the point where it completely changes how you act. It can make you meaner, kinder, shyer, more confident... The exact traits will change depending on the person you're synthing from, and they can be positive or negative.

Origin

From the Greek word ίδιος (idios), meaning one's self or belonging to one's self. This was chosen as idiosynthing is often a very personal thing that changes what might feel like your very being, often due to personality and identity confusion that comes with being ND

Synthing is a shortening of synthesizing, referring to the action of synthesizing different traits from people and taking them on yourself

The term is also similar to idiosyncrasy, or behaviors and thought patterns that are often unique to a person. This experience can change your idiosyncrasies to be those of another person, or may lead you to taking on others' in addition to your own

History

There's probably a few terms out there describing this, but I don't think I've found them yet. The closest I've gotten is constelic, which I do also identify with, but I wanted a term that had less ties to kin or alterhuman communities (which: it's not a kin term, but, still) and was more focused on the ND part of it. There's also the fact that this doesn't necessarily change how you identify so much as how you behave or express yourself, and what constitutes your personality rather than identity

As someone with BPD, autism, and DID, my brain often looks at fictional villain characters and "steals" traits from them, whether that means the way they talk, the way they move, the way they treat others, etc. This isn't something I can control and it's incredibly hard to stop once it starts- I usually have to wait it out and avoid that piece of media for a while. Sometimes getting back into it or being reminded of it will get my brain going again, but at that point it's typically a bit easier to control since I know what traits to expect to change. A lot of the time this can be a good thing, as it gives me a boost that helps me get things done, but most of the time for me these traits force me to work harder to be the kind person I want to be. I'll find myself being more sarcastic and sassy than usual, or darker and edgier, or giving into my depression more. It ranges a lot!

Moving on: while this was originally created with fictional characters in mind, it may also apply to people borrowing traits from real life people. For example, someone with BPD might synth as their FP (favorite person) for a time. People with autism may synth as their best friends, or celebrities they have a special interest in

This term is intended for ND people, but there are no other requirements. You don't have to have BPD or autism or DID, or anything similar. If your brain has a tendency to borrow traits from others for a while, which results in major changes to the way you yourself behave, talk, think, or interact with others, then congrats- the term is yours!

Restrictions

This term doesn't really have restrictions, but I do want to make some things clear:

This term is not an identity term per se, but rather a term like "masking." It's intended to describe something you do, not something you are. If you want though, you can probably use idiosynth as an identity

Due to the above, there currently is no flag. We may think about creating one later, but right now, we would actually prefer if there was no flag for this term.

This term is intended to be connected to the neurodivergent community, not necessarily the kin, alterhuman, etc communities. In short, "it's not an otherkin term" is what I'm trying to say. People in those communities are welcome to it, however!

This term doesn't inherently have to do with gender or orientation, but it may affect your gender presentation. As gender/etc is more part of your identity, we tried to avoid considering that as part of this term. However, if you still feel like the term fits you, then you're more than welcome to use it :)

so a while back we made a term and flag for an angelic gender that's not kin related. it's important to me because it's a part of my identity that i created something for, and i wanted to talk a bit more about it

grammar

i figured someone's probably wondered how to use the term at some point, so here's a few examples:

for use as an entire identity

"i identify as kidemónix"

"my gender is kidemónix"

for use as part of an identity, or as a descriptor

this is better written as "kidemónic" i think

"i am a kidemónic enby"

"my gender is solarian, with kidemónic parts"

"i'm kidemónic"

"i'm thinking about identifying as a kidemónic demigirl"

implications/interactions with other genders

this term is intended to be pretty vague, in the sense that it encompasses only the angelic parts of a gender. there are no intended binary leanings or anything like that

that said, this gender is fine to be slapped next to anything else you like. got a demonic gender in there? kidemónix can still be used as a label for you. it's not meant to imply, cancel out, or restrict anything else in your identity

oh, and with all that said: please don't explicitly make binary-leaning variants. like i said, this term is meant to be used however you want without implications. that's a lot of the point of creating it. if you feel like the angelic parts of your gender are influenced by being a boy/girl/etc, you're welcome to state so in your own identity! i'm just not looking forward to people making boy/girl/etc variants of a gender already built to imply almost nothing aside from its own specific meaning

experience and background

unfortunately, experiences are one of those things that i'm not super great at talking about, but i wanted to try anyway. the way i experience being kidemónik has to do with my nonhumanity; i'm an alter in a system who happens to be a catboy with wings. there are a lot of things that factor into the brain deciding on that presentation for me, and personally, i feel like some of those also factor into my gender

like mentioned in the original post, the way i sum up my gender is pretty much just "catboy." i'm nonbinary (solarian specifically) and i feel connected to man/boyhood, but there are parts of my gender that i can't really explain well, and "cat" feels the best in regards to it... but there are still some parts, like certain aesthetics and experiences associated with angels, that don't fit under that

which is pretty much what led me to make the term. it's something that's kind of a catchall for the angelic parts of my gender, the ones related to that part of my nonhumanity. it also touches on the experience of "needing to be pure" that i have a funky relationship with, as it's both a struggle for me as well as something that i've accepted as part of my relationship with a lot of things (especially since it's colored by trauma, which is Also a factor in a lot of my gender & sexuality)

honestly i spent a lot of time trying to find a good angelic gender that fit my needs, but a lot of them had to do with being otherkin, something that i don't really identify with. on top of that, a lot of the terms just didn't really feel right to me, so... i picked up something that has meaning to me and is mostly vague enough to fit anyone else with similar experiences

Kidemónix: A gender or aesthetic related to angelic feelings/connections, especially purity and/or regality.

The term and flag were both created for me personally, but I figured it’s good to share. A lot of my gender and existence can be summed up by the term “catboy,” but there are also parts of it that are more on the angelic side. I wanted a term/flag that was simple and easy on the eyes, and didn’t inherently have kin connections

That said, this term/flag can be used by anyone that feels that it fits. Kin or not, angelic alterhuman or not, if you think this fits you then go for it!

Description

A digital flag with 5 horizontal stripes. The top is a light cream, almost white. Below it are two stripes that are progressively darker cream colors. Below those are a light purple stripe and a slightly darker one.

Top stripe: purity or wings/flight

Layer terms

Age

Age varying: blanket term for age sliders/regressors/progressors (noun: age variant)

Age const(ant): term for headmates that stay the same age no matter what (noun form is also age constant)

Age advancing: term for headmates that progress in age over time, either following outspace or inspace time (noun: age advancer)

Time

-temporal: the suffix used for describing different types of time flows, similar in usage to -strata

Atemporal: describing a headspace that has no discernable flow of time inherent to it

Distemporal: describing a headspace with a flow of time that differs from outspace (eg: moves faster or slower than outspace time)

Vartemporal: describing a headspace with a flow of time that seems to differ depending on where you are in it, or that seems to have an inconsistent flow of time in general

Equitemporal: describing a headspace with a flow of time similar or nearly equal to time outspace (also applies to headspaces with time that moves similar to outspace, but may be slightly off; eg: a headspace with a time flow set 12 hours ahead/behind normal time, but still flows the same as outspace)

Strata (sing. stratum; strata can be used both ways, however)

Another term for layers, or parts of headspace that are disconnected from each other. Strata may or may not cause separation of the system in ways that affect fronting, memory, communication, and in-sys travel, but they often do. These differ from other disjointed locations in headspaces (eg: a house in one area, and a random cave in another) in that they tend to be felt as different "planes" of existence- these planes may overlap, however, with no visible differences between them in the areas they do so

Branches (sing. branch) Different areas of headspace that exist on the same layer. This is a term we’ve been using for a bit but have never officially written down for anyone else to use. It started with us describing our headspace as a tree while slowly uncovering our layers, and it’s kinda just stuck

One example of different branches might be two radically different areas that are connected by a neutral room- for us, that means the Void (a place with no visible walls or floors despite having them, where the background is nothing but shifting colors) and the Wonderland (a more fleshed out house with infinite space inside, an outdoors area, and an outside that does not match the inside). They’re connected by the fronting area, which is a large, grey room with a pool in one part and a loft area with an unused control panel. They’re on the same layer, and can be "felt" as such

Meanwhile, the Construction Zone (which overlaps with the main layer) is completely separate. There’s nothing connecting it to any of the other areas, and "feels" like it’s a separate plane entirely. The corner of it that overlaps with the main layer isn’t visible unless you know it’s there, and even then it’s a near transparent wall which can be walked through without entering the layer it belongs to

Note that these are definitely not the only ways to experience layers or branches, and people who experience things differently absolutely can still use these terms

Layer Types

Opstrata - Function/operation layers, aka layers that form to fill specific purposes (eg: they may hold headmates that are part of system management, might act as memory pools, or may be spaces for headmates to be rehabilitated)

Scribstrata - Narrative layers, aka layers that have a story in them that is played out by the headmates within

Intrastrata(/Mimistrata?) - Layers that formed through prolonged mimicry, or that contain populations/locations/narratives/etc that mimic/mirror other people (based on the terms "intragenic,“ "intra-layer,” and "intrastrataic" by Frozen City​)

Feel free to coin other types as well using the -strata suffix as well

As for where the term comes from, it’s just the latin word for layers. It was inspired mainly by FC’s term "scribstrataic,“ and we decided to extrapolate that to a few different types of layers

Additional Terms

Protostrata

A layer that’s almost always “in focus,” or has members in it that are often in front. There can be multiple protostrata per system- think like having multiple hosts.

Deuterostrata

A layer that is in focus less often than protostrata are. This can also be used to describe function layers that work in the background, but are rarely seen in actual focus.

Tritostrata

A layer that is almost never in focus. The people in these layers may rarely (if ever) front, or there could be communication barriers preventing this from happening. Tritostrata can also be used to describe layers full of dormant headmates, or even layers where headmates form before traveling to new layers.

Note: None of these terms are meant to describe the importance of different layers. This is purely about how much these layers are seen or interacted with, NOT how useful each layer is. Those choosing to use these terms get to decide how each one fits into their structure, if any of them do.
