Winter Berry was sick.

There was no denying it--it was the day of his wedding, his dream wedding to his dream man, and he was sick as a dog. His nose was stuffed up bad enough it made him dizzy, he awoke facing the world's worst headache, and a general drowsiness that he couldn't seem to shake off.

His hands shook as he went to shave in the morning, and with a resigned sigh, he went to the doctor, where he was surprised to learn that he had narrowly missed possible death by going when he did. Mildly shocked, he returned home to prepare for the wedding, determined to make it work.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly, until the very day before the wedding, Mitchell called Winter while he was at work, which he never did. Fearing something had happened to Rhodes, he answered immediately to hear Mitchell asking him if he could come home from work early, as he felt terribly ill.

Winter came home, of course, not wanting to leave Mitchell to take care of Rhodes by himself while sick or leave Rhodes to wander the house unsupervised. Plus, he was too proud to admit it, but his feet had been killing him since the last time he worked out. It was nice to get back home.

He arrived with a kiss for Mitchell (despite the man's playful complaints that he'd get sick too) and a hug for Rhodes, obliging Rhode's request to watch television with him before sending Mitchell to take a nap and fixing a simple, light dinner. When dinner was ready, Mitchell came back downstairs in a much better mood and Rhodes sat in his little chair and babble about the show he'd been watching and a character he saw on the cover of a book and Winter could not help but feel as though the world was as it should be.

It was nearing Rhode's second birthday, and Winter was feeling wonderful. The wedding invites had been sent and RSVPs had been recieved, he had been doing amazing at his job other than the odd failed prank, and he'd been spending so much time with Mitchell and Rhodes as a happy little family that it made him a little sick.

Lying in bed with Mitchell, he said as such, rolling over to lie on his back and stare at the ceiling. He grinned as Mitchell rolled over to kiss at his face.

"Let's have another baby," he breathed up at Mitchell, frowning as he watched the other man's smile drop.

"I don't think we have the money for that," he said slowly, sitting up a little. "The water bill is through the roof, and our house insurance goes up every year."

Winter pouted a bit. "Well, yeah, but I'm about to come into a promotion. Don't want Rosey to have to be an only child."

Mitchell nodded slowly, his eyes roaming around the room as he thought it over. Winter always thought he had the prettiest brown eyes--he found himself distracted before Mitchell began speaking again, going on about the price of the wedding and the idea of waiting a few years, at least until just before the wedding, or maybe right after it. Winter couldn't help but feel giddy about the idea of having another child at all, and he nodded, telling Mitchell they could wait as long as he wanted.

Mitchell came home exhausted and embarrassed. The prank he'd tried had gone terribly wrong--he simply didn't have Winter's knack for it, he supposed--and everyone at his job had laughed in his face (and not in the good way). Even worse, when he entered the front door, the house was empty, Winter and Rhodes nowhere to be found. A note on the table told him they were over at the Pancakes' house. He did not want to speak to the Pancakes right now. It's not like he didn't like them, but he didn't know them very well, and because of everything that happened during the day was super tired, and so just sat down and watched tv. At some point, he must've fallen asleep, because he wakes up as Winter and Rhodes enter the house. He kisses them both on the cheeks, telling Winter all the details about his shitty day at work, delighted when Winter leans in conspiratorially and whispers that he'd made gummy bear pancakes, and that he'd better go get some before Rhodes ate them all (never mind the fact that Rhodes can't--he doesn't have teeth yet). Winter put Rhodes down to bed and then sat down to watch television with him and he fell asleep once again, feeling cheerful.

Okay so perhaps it was a foolish idea to impulsively have a baby, but the moment he brought it up with Mitchell, he was incredibly on board with it. So on board, in fact, that he started making preparations immediately, saying he didn't want to have a baby too late, worried about dying while his child was only in their twenties.

Winter found this sensible, and surprisingly quickly (within a week or so), they had a sweet, smiling baby boy. Rhodes was so precious, wide eyed and innocent and absolutely adorable.

They decided together to put off their wedding until Rhodes was a toddler, wanting him to be able to participate in the proceedings, likely as a ring bearer. Winter could already see it in his head and the image melted his heart. He made a mental note to ask the Pancake twins if they wanted to take part as well, perhaps as flower bearers, as he drifted off to sleep.

Unsurprisingly, having a new baby in the house ate into his free time, as well as some of his not-so-free time. The day Rhodes was born, Winter's boss told him that he had two weeks "maternity leave" (Winter was torn between the idea of finding the idea of himself giving birth amusing and feeling insecure about the idea he looked pregnant the whole time. Mitchell was much less conflicted when told this, simply grinning and stating that he wouldn't mind, and he'd look cute. Winter scoffed at that, and that was the end of that conversation.), but when he took the next Wednesday off to take care of Rhodes, he got three angry texts and one furious call about the issue. Asshole, Winter thought as he hung up, taking Rhodes downstairs to try hummus he'd made earlier with him, which he was pleased to find he liked. (As he had told Mitchell, "My children will grow up on real food I make. I pray they never see a chicken nugget in their lives." Mitchell simply agreed with a chuckle and a kiss on the cheek.)
