Exploring the lexical delights of words with the -arian suffix
For me, the OED is one vast variety chocolate box: dip my mitts in, and I’m sure to haul out something lexically delicious. For no obvious reason, I decided to look at the suffix –arian , as in the antidisestablismentarian of the unforgettable and legendary antidisestablismentarianism. I wasn’t disappointed. And it turns out that antidisestablishmentarians are far from alone. I don’t mean…
I think it was mentioned before that -path and -flower tend to have overlap? Or at least that like, -path is considered the closest equivalent to -flower for toms.
That is correct! Raising kittens and raising apprentices aren't too far apart from each other in terms of general personality, interests and skills.
Poor Dottrelpaw- imagine she goes through mentally agonizing over which suffix she wants/sounds best for a WHILE and then when the day comes, after VERY long internal debate and indecision, she has finally picked the bestest, perfectest name, and proudly comes out named as "Dottrelfur", much to everyone's shock and disbelief.
"Honey, you had -flight available-"
"I know! I just thought -fur sounded good. It has a nice ring to it, right?"
"Honey."

Out of complete boredom, I decided to to try and figure out what the most amount of suffixes a cat could qualify for. Im so sorry this is so long.
Has to be a molly since only mollies can get -flower, and a tortie or calico would allow for more diverse appearance based names.
100% has to have a bird Prefix however, since bird prefixes can get both -flight and -step(even if its rare)
As for suffixes...
Skill-wise, she'd have to be a jack of all trades type. Seer suffixes are automatically off the table, along with -root, although thats just beacue she'd never be able to show that skill off. She'd have to be above average in most skills, with a preference towards one so she could quality for that skill too.
So she could get -fang, -leg, -nose, -shade, and -stream.
For the -fang she could lean into hunting or fighting, it doesnt really matter, which, just thats shes notably above average in both and slightly more skilled at one. So either -claw or -whisker but not both most likely. Then theres -leg... def has to lean into climbing/balance, since you could get both -tail and -bark/-branch.
(Didnt wanna make her too 'op' i guess? Like she def could be a very skilled hunter and fighter, so could qualify for both -claw and -whisker. Same with -tail/-bark/-branch and -foot.)
Then personality...hm.
Realistically speaking, the most I could see one cat being able to get would be; -cloud, -dawn/-dusk, -flight, -flower, -heart, -path, -step, -throat, and -wing!
Literally only leaves out 4;
-belly(technically could work, but i think seems a bit odd with the others)
-fall and -leap (she has a bird prefix)
-storm (Not while being able to get -cloud.)
Meaning she would have to be an overall very calm, diligent and intelligent cat; while also being hard stuck to her morals and beliefs. She would also be very good with young cats; both kits and apprentices, and would make a good mentor and/or mother. AND her personality would have to match with her bird prefix to get -flight and -step.
Finally, appearance based ones!
-ear, -eye(s), and -jaw all refer to injuries so she cant have those without giving up her bird prefix.
Obviously, both -fur and -pelt are options, along with -dapple and -speck(s) since shes a tortie but cant apply for those if she can get -patch.. She could also apply for either -spot(s) or -stripe, but not both.. And -face, shed have to be able to get that for the maximum she could have.
The most diverse would be -fur, -pelt, -dapple, -speck(s) -stripe(or -spot(s), and -face.
The bird shes named for has to be calm and intelligent at minimum. Crow and Raven came to mind, but she has to be a tortie and tabby in some way, so nope.
Looking at the tortie prefixes, all the bird ones that have the tabby requirement are; Brambling, Godwit, Dotterel, and Pipit
Thats.. not alot to work with, but ill try!
Brambling; very social and adaptable, they apparently form huge flocks and will forage together to find food during cold seasons, even with other finch species within the flock. Neat!
Godwit; Very territorial and protective, but will gang up on predator birds with other shorebirds.
Dotterel; literally could barely find anything about these guys; apparently their fairly chill and decently intelligent?
Pipit; More solitary than its other counterparts and less wary, highly territorial but other males will enter an adjacent males territory to help rid of an intruder. Which is pretty neat.
Anywho, Dotterel- fits the best, despite the limited info I could find on them.
Congratulations Dotterelpaw! Have fun choosing a name from:
-fang, -leg, -nose, -shade, -stream, -cloud, -dawn/-dusk, -flight, -flower, -heart, -path, -step, -throat, -wing, -fur, -pelt, -dapple, -face, -speck(s), and -stripe!
(I think it would be funny if cats argued about if she qualifed for -claw or/and -whisker, and -tail/-bark/-branch or/and -foot. And if no one could decide on what she actually ended up going with.)
She'd be a pale brown tortie tabby, So I imagine a fawn mackerel torbie?
(Sorry this is so long, I got carried away lol)
Speaking seriously, though, you put way more thought into this than I did and I fully support you.
This is a good way to look at it! It's got a similar implication status to it as -flower and -path, I think - room for potential growth and change.
what suffixes would a cat brag about?
Well, any new warrior is going to boast about their suffix regardless of what it is. But I assume you mean the suffixes that are particularly special to have on a general basis.
In that case, the suffixes that every Clan can agree are special would be multi-skill suffixes (-leg and -fang), the suffixes that relate to your prefix (-flight, -step, -leap, -fall), -wing, and the seer suffixes (-leaf, -feather, -light, -stone). All of these are fairly rare and imply something impressive about you that not many cats can claim for themselves.
Two things to note: one, all suffixes are meant to be positive and brag-worthy (-storm being a bit of an outlier, which we've discussed before); and two, the actual writing content of this fic series may differ a tiny bit with this particular lore for the sake of variety of names, but the lore stays the same.
