Amore e psiche
Adolfo de Carolis (1879-1928); oil on canvas
“Eros once failed to notice a bee that was sleeping among the roses, and he was wounded: he was struck in the finger, and he howled. He ran and flew to beautiful Kythere [Aphrodite] and said, ‘I have been killed, mother, killed. I am dying. I was struck by the small winged snake that farmers call the bee.’ She replied, ‘If the bee-sting is painful, what pain, Eros, do you suppose all your victims suffer.’”
— The Anacreontea, Fragment 35
A Note on Priesthood
So mini semi-rant time: you’re definitely not a priest or an expert if you’re actively a teenager in high school. That’s just not how any of this works, regardless of how many years you’ve worshipped a deity or practiced magic or polytheism. Priesthood is an actual thing that requires maturity, life experience, and gives you a leadership role in a community that someone who’s in high school, or even college, absolutely shouldn’t be taking on. Having followers on tik tok or tumblr does not make one a priest and to spread misinformation like that can be harmful for people who are new to their spiritual paths. Furthermore, claims of spirit initiations into priesthood is tricky and ultimately gives me some red-flags. I definitely thought that happened to me when I was that age and it was really just me projecting what I thought of myself and what I wanted onto my experiences and onto the divine itself.
I think issues like this illustrate a huge problem social media and echo chambers creates (not being a fogey and being like “social media bad” here). There’s this hubris that comes with this positive feedback from the internet that makes people feel qualified to speak on things or in ways that they actually aren’t and shouldn’t have to be. I think it’s important to accept inexperience, because I’m there myself, and to just slow down. I know it sounds condescending and rude but I promise you that you are not going to be doing things the same way in a few years if you’re an adolescent now, just as I’m sure I will not be practicing the same in a few years. The most important lesson that I am coming to learn is how to balance the belief in my personal power and qualifications with my humility and accepting that I don’t know as much as I think I do. I have been at that place of self-assuredness, thinking that I know everything and that I know better than everyone. In time that will begin to pass. What’s unfortunate is that this era of our lives is now often preserved on the internet.
I know this is ranty and perhaps will be taken the wrong way, but I just think it’s important that, as someone who has been there, I share that this is definitely something that should be worked on and worked past. I’ve been studying magic for about 12 years now and have been oath-bound to Hekate for about 6 years, and I’m still growing and shifting within my practice and will continue to do so. And while I would love to just call myself a priest because of the effort I’ve put in and the time I’ve spent learning, that’s unfortunately not how things work, and there’s reasons for that. Priesthood is not just about knowledge, power, or experience. It’s about wisdom, and community leadership both spiritually and personally, and isn’t something someone can just take on without qualifications. And that’s good and okay. Someone my age or younger usually has difficulty managing our own problems, let alone the problems of those who would seek guidance from a priest. I think we really need to get comfortable as an online community working towards humility and accepting our inexperience. Because I guarantee that we are all sometimes getting those “Hey! Slow down” signs like a flashing Knight of Swords, and are just overlooking them because it’s easier to do that than admit we don’t know something or aren’t ready for something. But being humble is actually a really great practice and will help all of us grow significantly in the long term. Anyways, this is really just a message I wish someone would have delivered to me in my adolescence and I hope it resonates with people.
The Tholos of Delphi, The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia (Delphi, Greece)
The most iconic monument of Delfi is not the temple of Apollo where the famous oracle was. It is the Tholos in the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia,
The Tholos of Delphi is a circular building of diameter 13,50 m. which is dated in the beginning of 4th cent. B.C. On a three level base was standing a circular cella which was externally surrounded by 20 Doric Order columns . The interior colonnade had 10 Corinthian Order ones.
The use of The Tholos still remains unknown.

Lovers kiss fig-sweet and holy tangled in ivy Fingers twined in Titian hair He loves the taste of wine and blood the madness of drunken lust of frenzied rage of flesh and fruit Lips full and blushed crimson slick with nectar Words that spill from his kiss-swollen mouth rend and restore burn against skin Balm of Gilead to the heart Drink him, slowly the thirst is bottomless
Meal Prayer to Demeter, Agathos Daimon and Hestia
A meal prayer, requested by Anonymous.
Demeter, agricultural god, Hestia, tender of the hearth, and the Agathos Daimon, the protector of my household, I thank you for your work, for supporting me, so I may delight in this meal and continue to be fed, stay by a fire’s warmth, and be protected. Thank you, beautiful goddesses and chthonian Serpent, for all that you have done.
do you think that non greek people should be allowed to follow hellenic polytheism? do you find it hard to take us seriously bc it's your culture? is it cultural appropriation? i don't mean to cause offence by asking i just saw some posts floating around and i'd like to know your opinion..just feeling kind of discouraged and awful about being in this religion but i'm trying my best to be respectful and learn and i just wanted to know what you thought
preface to these asks: I’m so sorry it took me so long to reply! I’ve been away from tumblr for a very long time!
In my personal opinion, and I don’t mean to be rude, I think that people who try to gatekeep the religion are not people that I would want to engage with or allow into my own personal communities. There’s is a difference between modern Greek culture and the surviving Greek Religion; around 98% of all Greeks are Greek Orthodox, and a lot of our traditions do follow Greek Orthodox cultures, even if you aren’t religious yourself. Not all of them, but many of them. I grew up around Greek kids and myself participating in Orthodox activities, Orthodox meals, Orthodox outfits, etc... (shoutout to all the fellow Greek kids who remember sleeping in sleeping bags on the floor of the church LOL)
Additionally, Hellenic polytheism has never been very strictly about bloodlines and passing down religion through the lineage through blood. Unlike other religions that are closed to this day, Greek polytheistic religion was often spread across the lands (see- how they would literally preach and share about it to other areas, such as when they went to Egypt, both parties took inspiration about the Apollo god and started sharing religious traditions, which would later become permanent in both religions. Also see - some shrines had open invitations to all passersbies that were travelling, regardless of social status or immigrant status)
Greeks, both modern and ancient, seem to be quite open about the religion, wanting the world to feel the “glory” of Greece and to have it spread. In my experience, people I’ve spoken to irl are more than happy to see people across the world practice. In fact, when I talked about American worshippers, I can sometimes see the light in people’s eyes because they feel like the Gods are not dead.
However, just a little note: I think it’s good to understand that the Gods in Hellenic Polytheism did come from Greece, and that Greece itself has a beautiful, big culture to learn about. To many of us in Greece who are practicing the religion, the Gods are not just toys to use; they’re a lifestyle to us. Greeks tend to be very reconstructionist in nature, in that they want the religion to be just like how it was back in the Ancient Days, lol. But it’s totally fine to be revivalist and encorporate the Gods in your practice in whatever way you like.
I think the bottom line is just: be respectful! Respect Greek people, and scholars who have studied ancient greek culture, language, and religion. Don’t try and act like you can speak for all the Gods and don’t act like there is one right or wrong way to practice. But the respect should go both ways; they should respect you, too.
and unpopular opinion: people who say only racial greeks can even talk to the gods and that greece is the only pure land are often racist/ethnofascists/etc and fail to regard the complex racial situations in both modern and ancient greece :x
ancient greek word of the day: χρυσόπτερος (chrysopteros), with wings of gold
reminder that this blog, while not politically focused, supports BLM. bootlickers and racists aren’t welcome here, and never will be.
