Something I’ve been thinking about most of UWMA’s run but I love how the show treated intimacy and kissing in particular. The Kiss didn’t really exist in UWMA; it wasn’t the climax of the entire romance and it wasn’t the last 5 minutes of the finale episode. Kissing was just one expression of casual intimacy between couples.

Korn and In’s kisses were easy, built on an established and consistent relationship. But they also hold hands, hug, and have sex, but those aren’t the whole thing that their story was building towards.

Dean and Pharm’s kisses were chaste and soft, fitting a brand new couple as sweet and inexperienced as they are, but they’re not uncommon. Every kiss isn’t treated like a major event or story point. They’re nice and sometimes that expression of love is important in that moment but not always. Dean and Pharm are so physically affectionate in so many other ways. Their kisses are important but they’re not given any special attention from the story or cinematic perspective, they’re just allowed to exist.

Same with Win and Team, their intimacy, sex or kisses or physical affection, is just how their relationship is expressed.

In a show that focuses heavily on homophobia the fact the the same level of respect the heterosexual couples get in media in regards to PDA is given to these LGBT couples is amazing. Their affection is just allowed to exist. It doesn’t need to be highlighted or treated as a major event. It’s allowed to be real because real couple are affectionate. Their intimacy simply exists in the circle of their relationship. UWMA does physical intimacy so goddamn well it makes my gay little heart sing. Too often we’re shown in media that our affections are dramatic, something to be stared at for good or for ill. It’s a spectacle.

Saifah: So, Tutor, I’m telling you this: no straight guy would act like Fighter. He’s shoved you against all the walls in college, there’s usually hardly an inch between your faces, he doesn’t treat anybody the way he treats you.

Tutor: Come on, he just likes getting on my nerves. How do you know he’s into me? You treat Zon almost the same way and it’s just your grudge against him.
