Aardman’s Conversation Pieces (1982-3) used real life dialogue, which gave the shorts a strange, compelling realness. The only acting comes from the plasticine figures, but it’s so subtle and casual that you’re starting to believe you’re actually watching a documentary in which the players just happen to be puppets.

There’s a parole hearing (images 5 and 6), a sales pitch (3 and 4), a newsroom with journalists (1 and 2), and everyone just potters about, doing the things that make up life. No dreams, heroic quests, story arcs, or inner awakenings.
