Shiba watches Hazuki closely while he speaks, his lips falling into a firm line as the Higher Being deigns to explain himself to his lowly Reaper. Shiba watches Hazukiâs listless expression, listens to flat his tone of voice and it disturbs him all the more. There isnât any light in Hazukiâs eyes, nothing that would suggest he was lying about his apathy toward the city he ought to be shepherding.
How disquieting, that all their lives hung suspended from the hand of such a being.
At least now that Hazuki wasnât looking at him directly, Shiba feels like he had a bit more room to breathe. To think. He sighs and reaches up to massage his forehead, shutting his eyes as he thought.
And what had Hazuki said earlier? That he did not choose Shinjuku and yet he was its Composer anyway. That made no sense. Any high ranking Reaper knew what would happen if you took out the Composer. It wasnât exactly a secret among the Officers and Elites.
But Shiba doesnât think heâs lying. The Composer had no reason to. What would be the point of Hazuki lying about any of this? Shiba certainly couldnât imagine. After all, it just made Hazuki sound like a fool, or at the very least, woefully uninformed.
Still, one thing Hazuki says feels like hot ash on Shibaâs skin.
It is as much a part of me as it is a part of you, but I've never felt the kind of love for it that you're talking about.
What the hell is he supposed to say to that? There were plenty of things that Shiba wanted to say. Things that the Composer might not have taken lightly. The lives of all of those in the UG and the RG depended on the Composer. It was by his design that the fabric of reality was able to exist at all.
It wonât be the same as it was.
Shiba takes a deep breath, then stands up, turning his heard toward Hazuki. He smiles at Shinjukuâs Composer, but it doesnât quite reach his eyes.
âMust be a miserable task, watching over a place you feel no spark for. Were you hoping the Inversion would allow you to mold Shinjuku into somewhere more appealing? Everything you had a problem with should be gone.â Shiba reaches up to adjust his sunglasses to keep his bangs firmly in place.
âAll four of us have accepted that our home will never be the same. After all, if we brought it back exactly how it was, youâd burn it down all over again without a second thought, wouldnât you?â
He shrugs his shoulders dismissively, as if the thought doesnât infuriate him. His smile grows wider and he lifts his arms in a grand gesture, turning to face the broken Shinjuku. âBut, so long as some pieces of our home remain, weâll be satisfied.â
âSo!â And he turns to Hazuki, suddenly energized. He bows to Shinjukuâs Composer, a low sweeping one that would fit better in a theater than a proper greeting. âLet us rebuild your stage! It will be better than it was, a true beacon to set the souls of this city aflame, blazing hotter than ever!â
And he looks up, his smile widening into a grin.
âCanât let Shibuya outdo us, right?â
