I was talking to my mom about the final of Fallout yesterday, since we'd watched it together, and we'd gotten onto the topic of the 👍⚔️ reunion. She'd started out by asking me if I'd basically "changed sides/am shipping them now," to which I'd said while, yeah, Maximus x Lucy are cute, that I only see them more so as friends. And Lucy’s changed a lot since she's last encountered Maximus, as I've seen others touch on more thoroughly in their posts, and so, yeah, I just don't see them "together" in that way. Maximus was the person that Lucy needed in that moment of losing her father, though from my, and it seems many others point of view, the hug didn't appear, shall I say... "romantic?" And the fact, too, that Lucy hadn't mentioned Maximus at all during the whole of this season? I mean... you'd expect for if two characters were to be endgame, that there'd be some mention of the other within a duration of time apart, yeah? Just like Mal mentioning Alina during their separation in season one of Shadow and Bone, or rather Bellamy mentioning Clarke basically every time they were apart (The 100) and to think that Cooper has mentioned Lucy when they were apart, lol. Anyway, back to the point of this post, my mom had then went on to comment how she just couldn't see how Cooper and Lucy’s relationship could ever be interpreted as romantic for he'd "cut her finger off," and so forth. And like, a part of me understands that how, yeah, one could definitely look at that moment and be like "'romantic,' seriously," I, on the other hand, see (once again) a compelling character dynamic laid out before me that has romantic undertones. I've shipped my fair share of enemies-to-lovers, like "Bellarke," "Darklina," "Erikstine," and so forth... so how's their relationship any different, lol. I've always been drawn to these types of relationships in media--the ones with real intrigue, real issues, and not just "oh, person A never told me that the reason that they'd dated everyone but me is because they didn't want to ruin our friendship," because that dynamic and others like it are entirely overdone, in my opinion. And so, from that point of the conversation, I'd then went onto the topic of Cooper and Lucy’s reunion/Cooper saving Lucy, and how he'd gifted her the ability to decide her father's fate. For once, Lucy had the power to choose... and it was because of Cooper, and I honestly love that so much. And it only goes to show just how much more Cooper means to her, and given now that he's gone, how much (I'm sure) that he will weigh on her mind and influence her further while they're apart and vice-versa, y'know? Both Maximus and Cooper have helped to shape who Lucy is, only Maximus had Lucy stuck in the past of how things should work, while Cooper brought her to the present, showing her how the world is.
