Convenience or Community? A Brief AI ThinkPost
Inconvenience is one of the integral parts of a community and its sustainability.
To go out of your way to do something that may not be as beneficial for you as it will be for someone else is what fosters an environment of mutual support and reliability in what your community can provide for you in times of need. While there are endless reasons to oppose the public's use of generative AI, I want to focus on the idea of its use stripping the public of inconvenience and creating a platform where intensive thought and error is nearly eliminated.
When an individual has a difficult question to answer or task to complete, we have come to a point in technological advancement where we are able to surrender our discomfort and frustration of being wrong or extensively put to work by putting a prompt into a generative AI platform and have it do virtually every step of the process for you. Before this resource was released for public use, we intuitively resorted to asking our peers or more experienced individuals about difficult tasks we had to complete. By exploring others' thoughts about something you cannot figure out on your own, you are exposing yourself to new experiences and ideas that you had not yet had or cognitively connected. With each prompt that's inputted, that is one or more conversations and connections with another human that you are forfeiting for the sake of convenience.
I'm sure this isn't a novel idea by any means, but thinking that one of the consequences of using AI is the disintegration of community may be a new perspective on its effects and provides a new interpretation of how it is harmful to both the world and people on an individual level.
