When I was a kid watching tv was idiot coded and nerds read books, but now scrolling shortform videos is considered braindead behavior and watching tv means you're some kinda intellectual. You might think this shifting assessment of media's consumers might make readers into absolute super geniuses, but no. Only perverts read now.
so the synopsis of The Ring is: you will die 7 days after watching this videotape. my question is does that apply to rewatching the tape. let's say I watch the tape, wait 6 days, and watch it again. does the timer reset to 7 days? can I do this indefinitely? can I become functionally immortal by watching the evil videotape on a weekly basis?
I require the film where someone decides this means they are functionally immortal for 6 days after watching the tape so seeks it out before going on a series of utterly batshit suicide missions. The tape keeps trying to do creepy crap around them and they're just like "I have 3 days 12 hours left to do this prison break so you're not even on my top 10 concerns, either distract this guard for me or go do something about that hair while you're waiting"
The ghost is so baffled and has no idea how to explain that's not how any of this works that it does save them a couple times while trying to get this across, thus convincing them the theory has been validated
its 2026 i cannot handle any more fucking "author A obviously ripped off author B" discourse by people Who Have Only Seen the work of author B and admit themselves that they have no further knowledge of the literary landscape they are moving in. like.
...this reminds me of the last Lit class I took, where the most frequent talkers in the class really only had bible-reading in their childhood.
Oh, no, I'm sure that this story that predates the presence of Christian presence in the part of the world that birthed it is inspired by the Christian Bible. Oh, wait, it's writing that predates Christianity altogether. My bad.
For the love of media literacy, please get a nice broad base before trying to be a serious media analyst. Makes for a much sturdier foundation and more compelling analysis.

You know technology literacy is dying because I saw this meme with 76k likes
F11 the full screen button? You’re scared of the full screen button? F10?? It opens the menu bar???
Computers are so scary what if I accidentally hit F12 in a steam game and it takes a screenshot. What if I press shift + F12 while in word and accidentally save my document 😖
If you had to learn what the F keys on your computer do through me reblogging this post, then I'm glad you did. Computer literacy is not a skill that gets taught anymore, and it is absolutely one that needs to be taught in order to be learned. Don't ever feel bad for not knowing something, but ☝️ don't ever stop learning learning about your environment, the tools you use, and especially the people around you
Never stop learning+ Never stop sharing what you learned
Every mythical creature has a natural counterpart meant to balance them out. Elves and dwarves, werewolves and vampires, etc. Humans have just discovered they too have a counterpart.
And all it took was just enough advanced mathematics courses to make sense of it.
Well.
Abstract Algebra, at least.
You start with some examples, and you look at how they interact with each other. Not just the social interactions, but the ecological, the developmental, and even economical.
You could say they cancel out. If we want to simplify it like it's only a two-way interaction.
Like an additive inverse.
So when we were sat down with yet another duopoly outsider group (what they were is not important, beyond being outside of the usual mess), and were talking about balancing acts, they brought up something that should have seemed obvious.
All our internal struggles, our wars, our vicious arguments and escalations that periodically threaten our existence.
We're our own counterpart. At least, in this reality.
Like the additive identity.
Then, like a couple of assholes, the outsiders left. Continuing their journey through the different realities.
We are only balanced out, negated, by ourselves.
Of course, this is likely oversimplifying things. I mentioned this idea to a microbiologist friend of mine, and her conclusion was that we're more like an autoimmune disorder. That it's only in the absence of an external regulator, like an existential threat, that we cancel ourselves out.
An elf that overheard us muttered something about ensuring no such threat ever arises as they left the café. I don't think they meant for anyone to hear it, but oh well.
I should get another cookie. They're tasty with today's coffee.
