2016 Fantasy Football Ranks
In addition to the following I have also posted a rolling list that I will continue to update periodically throughout the preseason on a google doc that you can find HERE.
Below are the top 20 of each position. I do not rank âoverallâ. I find it to be a bit tedious and sort of a mundane task. Instead I like to do a series of blogs where I draft in various positions to show how to build a certain type of team from any draft order, you can find those previous posts from past seasons titled âIF I WERE DRAFTING...â in my archives.
Alongside the ranks I have provided briefs on my reasoning. Watch my twitter this week for brief videos where I will elaborate further on my thought process for ranking with a focus on drafting as well as explaining the process of âtierâ drafting.
CURRENT COMPLETE RANKS CLICK HERE
Aaron Rodgers / I donât feel like I need to justify this much. He will have a healthy arsenal, sizable chip on his shoulder and can only improve on last seasons âmediocreâ fantasy stats.
Cam Newton / Same as above, the defending Super Bowl losers tend to usually stay in the pack of competition. He will have Benjamin back as well as another year within the same system which only benefits his versatility to throw or run.
Russell Wilson / Itâs debatable for me to put him above Luck just because his division is tougher and his options are questionable but he has the dual threat that can put you over the top any given week.
Andrew Luck / Last season hurt a great many of us and when you go low with the talent he possesses and has at his disposal itâs a better bet he will bounce back than slip further down.
Drew Brees / A newly retooled utility belt, they will be in burners and Brees is best at putting up gaudy numbers. Giggity.
Derek Carr / He showed us flashes of big-game potential last year and has the opportunity to take over the division as the only âup and comingâ QB under center (Rivers/Sanchez/Smith). Cooper is a legit threat and these arenât your Al Davis Raiders anymore. You can get him very cheap very late so donât waste a pick on someone lower in my ranks before him.
Carson Palmer / Sure, heâs aging and heâs got a HOF receiver with one foot out the door, but the arm is still there and his game-knowledge is bar-none making him a bankable commodity for his ADP.
Tom Brady / Suspension be damned, this is the top fantasy QB for the last five seasons regardless of who is around him or what limitations he faces. You will of course want to pair him with a Carr who has a favorable schedule to start the season. There is no reason you canât own two fantastic QBâs.
Eli Manning / With big brother gone it will be Eliâs time to shine. Quietly the Giants have rebuilt without rebuilding and have a schedule ripe for picking. Donât sleep on the usually dependable lil brother.
Blake Bortles / The youth of the Jaguars is where I draw most of my confidence. The core unit of this team has a camaraderie that you canât see on paper but you can feel when you watch them. He wonât win many games but he will keep the Jags and your fantasy team competing deep into December.
Tyrod Taylor / Admittedly I liked him a lot more before he got paid, but I am happy for him regardless and think that his ADP screams value if you pair him with any of the following QBâs in my top 20.Â
Ben Roethlisberger / Many of my counterparts have Big Ben much much higher, but for my money I think he is currently being over valued and the injury concerns are not going away, for him or anyone on this offense.
Philip Rivers / Heâs spotty but there is potential for match-up based booms out of Rivers if you know how to manage your roster. I wouldnât waste anything on him if you didnât already have a QB.
Joe Flacco / Before his season ended abruptly last year, Flacco was on pace for ungodly passing numbers the likes of which Baltimore has never seen. He now has Mike Wallace who has never had the arm that Joe has throwing to him. I would tag Flacco as a sleeper this season and he looks nicely accompanied by Taylor, Big Ben or Brees.
Matt Ryan / How far he has fallen, once a rising fantasy stud, now Ryan is looking at as just the means to Julioâs ends. Their schedule is tough but he could have some surprise solid performances here and there when you are in need.
Ryan Tannehill / Will this be the year? I feel as though we have said that every year with Tannehill, but this could really be the year. Coming in under the radar, he has a talented young core of weapons now supported by Arian Foster. The time is now or never, Iâm willing to bet a deep pick on it.
Matt Stafford / No more Megatron but Anquan isnât a terrible replacement. Injury is always the biggest concern with him, but heâs got too good of an arm and the seasoning not to put up worthwhile fantasy numbers each week.
Tony Romo / I have him this high because of Dez Bryant. He has the real possibility to not finish the season but the bargain reward could be monstrous if this offense can find itâs mojo again.
Ryan Fitzpatrick / If he gets the job, he belongs here. If he doesnât, everyone moves up and Winston goes in at 20.
Marcus Mariota / Letâs try this again. There is something happening in the music city and if they can all stay healthy there could be a new fantasy buffet to feast on in Tennessee.

Adrian Peterson / Usually comes back with a gusto from injuries and is still the reigning bulldozer between the tackles.
Toddy Gurley / He ushered in a new class of runners last season and in a new environment where the entire world is watching he just may outdo himself to back up his mouth.
Devonta Freeman / There are a lot of questions around the Atlanta offense but Freeman is not one of them. I like him to continue his primary role of 20-25 carries a game barring any injury setbacks.
Eddie Lacy / I have a theme for the Packers this year: Redemption. Every single Packer should have something to prove, Lacy included. He has come back lighter and wants to keep his job now that everyone is back and healthy.
LeSean McCoy / The Buffalo backfield has thinned out over the last few weeks and McCoy has risen to the top easier than expected. He will be the focus for a run-first offense and is always a threat to catch a few balls for long yardage or scores.
LeâVeon Bell / I worry about injury and the suspension hurts but he is far too valuable to let slip any lower.
Mark Ingram / He could quietly slip farther than he should in your draft so have no fear pull the trigger on a steady bell-cow back who is lead by a HOF Quarterback.
Thomas Rawls / Beastmode is no more and Rawls has the chops to pick up the reigns where he left off in a versatile offense, but keep an eye on Michael as a cuff later in the draft.
Jamaal Charles / One injury away from a worthless pick, you decide if itâs worth your first round pick, or even your first RB pick, but Iâm probably staying away.
David Johnson / Same as Charles, Johnson may be talented but he is also fragile. I wouldnât want to take him and have to draft Chris Johnson or Ellington just as a hand-cuff either because thatâs just too much of a headache so my money is going elsewhere.
Lamar Miller / Houston & Miami traded backs in the off season. I think Miami got the better deal, but Houston has Hopkins and then...yea, so Miller just slightly ahead for now only because he is literally their only other option.
Doug Martin / The risk/reward is so extreme, I only advise if you take solid primary runners later just in case he busts because Jameis could do all the digging on the ground if Martin canât start hotter than he usually does.
Jonathan Stewart / Will he emerge as a truly dominant back? Maybe never with Cam in front of him, but he still gets the ball second to him so worth a pick if you need a RB1 late.
Ezekiel Elliott / Go ahead and waste your first round pick if you want to but the last time Dallas had a tailback finish the season was two years ago when Murray had his benchmark season. I say fluke and also would go so far to say Elliott doesnât play more than 10 games this season.
Carlos Hyde / Chip Kelly in charge now? Hyde has been waiting to let out Jekyll and now that he has a coach willing to unhook the reigns, snatch this cheap back up at a bargain late.
Matt Forte / He will probably enter the season injured but will eventually come to own the offense in New York. Always reliable when heâs on the field, Forte is a bargain at his current ADP which I foresee skyrocketing as we approach September.
Latavius Murray / The entire Oakland offense is poised to really break out and Murray has the biggest ceiling of them all. He should be going far earlier but the way the current scene is a lot of over valued guys are being scooped before him making it easy to snag him in the 8th round and after. There is competition so eyeball the rookie Washigton who is Sproles-like with quickness.
Rashad Jennings / The backfield is his and his alone, plus he has the perfect style to match Eliâs brand of offense. Take him when heâs there and you need some RB depth, he will surprise you. There is also Paul Perkins and you would do well to watch and or snag him if you are in a deep league.
Arian Foster / He could be the steal of the fantasy season at his current ADP. There has been a serious lack of talent behind the QB since Ronnie/Ricky left Miami and Foster with Ajayi could be the medicine that cures.
Jeremy Langford / Forteâs injury last season opened the door for Langford and he seems to have kept a hold of the knob. I donât foresee a ton of competition so youâre drafting him for the potential for a high reward at his current ADP plus his competition Jordan Howard would be easy to snag should he start to show signs of struggle.

WIDE RECEIVER (Briefs coming Monday)
Odell Beckam Jr. / The consensus says Brown first overall, but Iâm more inclined by ODBâs schedule and the soft division.
Julio Jones / Officially the head honcho in Atlanta, he has proven year after year his upside has no limit.
A.J. Green / While Dalton hasnât progressed, Green has still continued to evolve into a weekly anchor in fantasy leagues. There has been concern with lack of help but his big game potential outweighs any flags or defensive coverage.
Antonio Brown / He has been the dominant fantasy receiver for the past four season and I am listening to my gut that this will be his first semi down season. Probably not by much but I am suspect on the Steelers offense.
DeAndre Hopkins / His talent warrants his position here, and while his new teammates are considered upgrades I am not so eager to jump on board just because talent comes together on paper. Still, he will see his share of looks and make his owners happy regardless.
Dez Bryant / Looking to make up some ground after last season he shouldnât be slept on and is seriously undervalued at the current moment.
Alshon Jeffrey / There is still WR1 inside of him and he has some help now, besides you can get him at later than he should be taken.
Brandon Marshall / Decker is going to eat at his totals and Forte doesnât make it any easier either but heâs a monster target and hard to ignore at his current ADP.
Allen Robinson / Another year with Bortles should produce quality results each week barring any match-up conundrums and this Jaguars team has the potential to be a fantasy bonanza week to week.
Brandin Cooks / Last year was supposed to be his year but the hype ate his outlook away. Now, he comes in under the radar and is poised to pop with a few new pieces around him in the passing game.
Mike Evans / I think he takes a downswing but should still produce worthy of a top 10 receiver. Jameis is poised to break out but his schedule makes me cringe a bit.
Randall Cobb / Yes, ahead of Jordy. I donât think I like anymore more this season than Cobb but since he has seen no love there is no risk in waiting until the 4th or even 5th to take him. He will a top five wide out when all said and done this season.
Amari Cooper / There is a certain quality that Cooper has shown to Carr that he really looks for on field. They are now roomies too which can only mean they will be teammates for quite some time and I like getting in on the ground floor.
Sammy Watkins / If he can stay healthy...he could be a monster at this price.
Kelvin Benjamin / Itâs almost like he wasnât injured last season the way Carolina played on offense but now that heâs back, there is no reason they canât outdo themselves this season.
Demaryius Thomas / He still has talent but not so much of it looking his way anymore, however, Peyton didnât really give much effort last season so any arm is a good arm in Denver these days.
T.Y. Hilton / He should produce but temper expectations with Moncriefâs enhanced role in the system and Dwayne Allenâs increased role.
Keenan Allen / Contract year, look for big things out of quiet San Diego as Allen has the ability to deliver big games.Â
Jarvis Landry / Attention will be paid to him most of the game but he has a knack of getting open and catching balls that are well out of range. Plus, Tannehill has looked more accurate downfield in the preseason so far.
Julian Edelman / When Brady is back, you will be glad you took him when you did.
Jordy Nelson / Look I love Jordy, but until I see him in a real game and not take longer than 10 seconds to get up from a hit I canât make a confident endorsement of him.

TIGHT END (Briefs coming Monday)
Rob Gronkowski / No matter the situation with Brady, he should always be the first TE you want, plus Bennett will provide a second punch that always helps Gronk.
Greg Olsen / Benjamin back helps his case but he may see less end zone looks now.
Jordan Reed / Cousins enjoys his size and durability down field. Big red zone target and consistent pass catcher.
Travis Kelce / The KC offense is ready to score more than they have in years past and Kelce is the second option next to Maclin, they paid him for a reason.
Gary Barnidge / Supreme value late, donât wait. I would even consider taking him after Gronk in certain leagues where FLEX includes TE.
Coby Fleener / Now with Drew Brees looking his way, shades of Jimmy Graham are flashing...
Delanie Walker / Mariota was eyeing him regularly last year, expect more of the same.
Antonio Gates / Thereâs no rush now so I worry about motivation, but he has consistency and is Rivers favorite target.
Julius Thomas / Between Thomas, Hurns and Robinson, Bortles should have many high yardage games with most of his first downs coming from Thomas.
Martellus Bennett / When Brady returns he and Gronk should already have found a rhythm in the offense. I am considering this a risky play though as we know itâs going to be planned for by defenses.
Jason Witten / Aging but can be a good plug-and-play.
Eric Ebron / Detroit will need to find a new red zone target without Megatron.
Charles Clay / He will get more action than his ADP suggests.
Benjamin Watson / Flacco has needed him for a long time. His experience will benefit him tremendously in this long-bomb offense.
Zach Miller / If Cutler wants him he will be there but itâs simply a matter of timing.
Tyler Eifert /Â His health is troubling so draft at your own risk but could bounce back so worth a shot if youâre willing to gamble.
Zach Ertz / He could be the only healthy target and a bargain late for his ADP.
Jared Cook / He has the talent but wonât be more than a spot starter behind your starters bye week.
Jacob Tamme / Same as Cook, air gets thin when you reach this deep in the atmosphere.
Dwayne Allen / Probably the best option if you missed the boat on TE entirely, he and Luck have a connection.
