Bloodborne is essentially, Pirates of the Caribbean with an extra dose of cosmic and gothic horror: You use flintlocks and blunderbusses, you can dress with tricornes and the Hunter's Dream is essentially the Flying Dutchman, which in the words of Bootstrap Bill "The Dutchman must have a captain."
The Good Hunter starts out pretty much like Will Turner: Entering the Dream by necessity, to get the pale blood in order to heal a sickness, just like Will Turner entered the Dutchman in hopes of saving his father, Bootstrap Bill. Yet the Hunter, by defeating Gehrman and the Moon Presence, he ends up becoming like Davy Jones: A Great One and the new guardian of the Dream.
This is also noted on the Fishing Hamlet, where is inhabited by Fishmen that look straight out of the Flying Dutchman.
O' Flora, o paleblood...
Drew this forever ago.
The moon presence is a cunning and brutal mother, but I suppose most are. She is not often acknowledged by the hunters she surreptitiously adopts alongside the formless Oedon, but she need not be, their prosperity is hers.
was wondering if anyone else thought this when they saw god in ultrakill, one of the things that popped in my head was the moon presence or the amygdalas from bloodborne.
I love that the great ones in bloodborne are gods to the people of yharnam and that they went with a design somewhat reminiscent of them in ultrakill which im sure was unintentional. Still cool nonetheless.
"Yes, Miss Flora, I ate those umbilical cords, what you gonna do? Kill me?"
Chega aquele momento do ano que todo o fan de Bloodborne lembra que esse jogo nunca vair sair pra pc porque a Sony é uma desgraçada

Doll’s creator might not even been Gehrman??
Honestly though, the idea that it was Moon Presence who created the Doll like that is so frikin good as well, and it works too?
- Lore never mentions WHO created the Doll by the name or the status, every description only says ‘doll’s creator’ (!)
- Doll does bleed paleblood, so that’s at least a hint on what animates her, so is this a far stretch that she just made the whole creature altogether?
- Wishing for comfort, warmth and support ‘albeit in vain’ could have referred to Moon Presence’s failure to force a genuine love for her into a creation; meanwhile Doll does mention that thing about creation by gods
- ‘Mania’ link doesn’t exist; “his curious mania” is mistranslation of “madness of his curiousity” and the mania put into creation of Doll’s clothes refers to being absorbed in work, so what if it was her who got so lost into getting to design something like this? (retranslation document: ( x ))
- Doll’s purpose is stated to serve the hunters and the Hunter’s Dream, she is like Gehrman but is more perceived as one of the tools (to channel blood echoes)… and, well, Moon Presence does govern the dreaming hunters… It is not far stretch to assume that most of the hunters visiting the Dream are hetero males, so it is very palatable that Moon Presence simply used her most barebones idea of ‘a woman’, that will be comforting for ‘men’. I mean, a being of entirely different and superior plane of existence could very well interpret humans through stereotypes and basic ideas. Heck, some humans also do it xD
- Making the Doll look like Maria could be her awkward attempt to make Gehrman happy, to honor Maria as one of the most “useful” hunters (to perpetuate the cycle of beasts, hunting and GOs’ worship), or both
- For someone who supposedly created the Doll as either an unhealthy grief reaction and clinging for happier, simpler times before Maria’s hunter arc, or dreaming about better life, is not it… strange that he never mentions Maria, even when he is sleeping? He seems to care about Laurence more, in fact. So what if he did not care about her to SUCH big extent as to create a doll of her?
- Would resolve big immersion break when you find doll’s clothes in the chest rather than pick them from the “real world” doll; maybe Moon Presence saved extra copy of the dress just in case if someone ever loves Gehrman and wants to join the Dream. Like maybe she has whole one (1) idea for what such people would want to wear.
_______
I think there are still a few sticks in the wheel here. Like how someone who cared about hair ornament had to be a real person. But even then, could’ve been Maria herself, maybe she just really fucking loved that hair ornament a lot. And also that Doll sleeping is odd but finding Maria asleep too could explain it; that when one of them is asleep another is awake, and vice-versa, but neither remembers what’s in another one’s realm. (and they also have the same voice, in Japan too - it’s Saori Hayami!)
But honestly, this is such a…. how do I put it, sparing theory? Forgiving one? It is basically “nobody was weird, it was just a god that doesn’t know much of humans’ complexity beyond just what they want from them”. Yet again, Miyazaki put the story in such a way that opens SO many opportunities for interpretation?
Moon Presence might actually be PETTY! Hear me out
Okay, I pointed out before that it is 99.99% that the picture on Maria’s table in the Nightmare is taken from Old Workshop:
I was thinking it had to be something sentimental, but on the second look….
Could this be a low resolution Pthumeru chalice? I mean, if that was the intention, they sure could have tried a bit better to reproduce it accurately, but still, there is a chance that this is what’s implied? Especially because, from what we can see, it was supposed to be filled with blood - that should be part of the ritual to break the seal.
The chalices were a big thing for Old Hunters of Gehrman’s kind, not just for Tomb Prospectors, and it is likely that Maria was helping to raid the tombs too.
So what it has to do with the picture?
Well, she is in the Hunter’s Nightmare. In hunting attire after she regretted being a hunter, with her weapon after she threw it away. So maybe the chalice is there to further anchor her to the troubled past and sins she just can’t escape in basically the Hell realm - raiding the tombs of Pthumerians! And… so, this is the picture she hates looking at, but is forced to always find back, even if she tried to throw it away.
I still personally see three people in the picture - one in the middle and two by either side. And think that the middle figure gotta be Maria (pale hair and the spot that might be her white collar). One of the others could be Gehrman, too.
But, yeah, I didn’t think of it before, but it could be there to remind her of hating her time as the hunter (or even hating Gehrman personally).
The strange bit here is that this picture is MISSING from the Dream version of the Old Workshop, that was supposed to have been reproduced as it was in the moment of the Hunter’s Dream creation. So, did someone already take this picture? Of course, if we follow ‘bad memories’ route, Maria COULD have taken the only picture of herself in the “don’t dare to even look at me like THIS!” to Gehrman manner, but you know what ELSE was in the “real” version of Abandoned Workshop? Maria’s hair ornament!
So why did not Hunter’s Dream repeat that too, and Doll only saw the ornament from us for the first time? Well, what if that’s because Moon Presence didn’t want Gehrman to think about Maria the way she really was?
In THAT case, Gehrman not even mentioning Maria when he is asleep, that supposedly was a dear person for him, could easily mean that the plan to wash her away from his memory with years succeeded; and maybe it was easier to do with the Doll being near that has her face, so could somewhat ‘replace’ image of Maria entirely with more ease.
And that makes the Doll, who is animated by Moon Presence, speaking about how ‘creation loves its creator because creator made it this way’ feel like sort of passive-aggression from Moon Presence, as if hinting towards how she wants to be treated! I just think this is funny.. but also somewhat dark. But also somewhat funny (in a slightly repulsive way).

O Flora, of the Moon, of the dream. O little ones, O fleeting will of the ancients... Let the hunter be safe, let them find comfort. And let this dream, their captor... foretell a pleasant awakening... Be one day a fond distant memory.
Another silly little Bloodborne theeree of mine is that those holes in Moon Presence's face aren't eye sockets or mouths (at least not strictly speaking), but ears. Given the emphasis on sound throughout the game, be that voice, echoes, or resonance, I can't help thinking the way it presses itself to the Hunter's chest looks as if it's listening to their very heartbeat, to the blood coursing their veins. After all, the One Thirds of the Umbilical Cord needed to challenge the Moon Presence resemble eye-laden human cochleae.
This also raises grim implications for the Doll, who channels our "echoes of blood" into strength, but who is fundamentally linked to this entity within the Hunter's Dream, sustaining it in some sense, as seen when the Hunter becomes an infant Great One in its stead. In which case, I wonder if the Moon Presence isn't decayed or rotting, but gestating with every act of channeling blood echoes through the Doll, harvesting the essence of any and all manner of blood, culminating in a grotesque primordial amalgamation of all the Hunters' victims. To me, it embodies the purpose the Hunters so desperately needed to justify their endless violence, and reverence for their countless prey that sated their thirst.
