how it feels to talk about anything at all
ADDITIONALLY it's so interesting that lestat's willingness to kill claudia at the end of s1 isn't something that seems to matter at all. this is what I've been pondering though since like. s2. louis getting over that, and then getting over lestat being at the trial, or the implication of him getting over those things borne of the writers never having him address/confront it - and louis is famously quite incurious, capable of putting uncomfortable things out of sight where he doesn't have to look at them, you have a textual reason to have him not/do that, but it has never felt intentional, it has always felt like the writers made these changes w/ these characters and dynamics and didn't consider that it should maybe impact how the adapt what comes after. like this is one of the most egregious cases, 3x06, but it's Been a problem with the show. it's what made me stop really emotionally investing in it, it's why i'm maybe not as upset by most of this, truly expectations have been on the ground. the revelation that claudia lied about the train (unnecessary way to play that out ofc, just gross and they had other options) doesn't even feel like it resonates at all because the writers' carelessness has already rendered this unimportant to louis. and if there were any intention in it, surely claudia would have called it out. but they've been letting down that side of it for a minute.
absolutely agree w/ condemnation of the claudia scene specifically w/r/t shit no white writers have any business writing but will remain always and forever confounded by ppl who can't even entertain that claudia would have any ill will towards louis. even if, like kindest read on that, she's literally too past anything resembling any kind of Good to remember any love she has for him, the idea that she didn't also possess any kind of anger at all is just. like that's crazy to me.
anyway! 0 black writers for this show really is worst case scenario. rolin jones it literally didn't need to be this way. fire yourself
shortly after watching Reaper i started watching Fresh Off the Boat, also starring Ray Wise, and it took a good minute there for me to stop being like "oh crap, why's the devil there? 😱"
twin peaks & reaper fans have this in common i think

whenever the devil stops going easy on Sam, im like, wait so he's not your favorite poor little meow meow?
GASP
He is satan's favorite little meow meow!!
Just because it came up yesterday too, I always thought that the way the fans completely divorced AMCs Claudia from her Blackness was a very insidious form of misogynoir that I admit, was new for me (within a fan space).
Like, everyone "likes" her! But in that very "girl boss girl power" white feminism way where they erase everything about the source of the power out, in order to subsume it. And it's weird because to me, it showed that, just like how they did with Louis, they did not engage with how Claudia's Blackness was another important part of her story. Despite it being quite spoonfed in season 2, tbh.
Think about it. Claudia is 1) Black, 2) female, 3) queer, and 4) trapped in a child's body, forever. This is like, the torment nexus of Lacking Power and Autonomy In Society 😭 Going unheard, that resentment against the world for not taking her and her needs and her desires seriously, from inside the home and on. Of having to build a wall of strength and resilience to protect herself, of always Taking Care of Business because her goof ass brother certainly isn't gonna do it! Of having to grasp power her own way, because it will never be considered for her. Yet, somehow still a threat.
To me, AMCs Claudia is a very beautifully written example of a Black Woman that is Angry, who would be treated like an Angry Black Woman. So many of these fans HATE real world Claudia's! Because I've seen her rage and exhaustion, her fire to fight (Akasha's too), in so many of us. And yet we don't get the girl power, girl boss label- until it's time to Need us. Otherwise, you're just a Bully.
And so it was so bizarre witnessing people just... Water that down for her. To not even bother to notice it, outside of "angry at men". Idk. One of those "your favorites would hate you" situations.
She, she, she, it is she… It is often she. And in the old songs and in the long nights, she holds him in the softness of her arms, in her arms that are open, in her arms that are wide, that are open, that are always, that must always be open. And in the old ways and in the old laws, this was arranged. All this was arranged. And who arranged it? Did Amel? And that is what it means to be loved. It is Amel. It is always Amel. It is often she… Into the land where the dead are kept, where the dead are worshipped. And why the days without number? And what am I for? What is this for? And what should Amel do with it if not to answer? And why are they throwing stones? And why is she curled on the ground? And why is it wound… And in my eyes is desire, and why is it desire? And why does he tell her what God has said? And why Amel in their mouths? And why must my voice be smooth? And why must I sing so low? And why is she kept? Why must she be kept? And why in this place must she be kept? And what does it mean if you are not asked? And what does it mean if you are not answered? And what is it to see and to know, but to be told… You have not seen. You have not known. And why is her tongue cut out? And why is her death prolonged? And when will it stop? And who will stop it? And why must they, must we, must I, must he, must they, as the millennia, unfold? Why the girl curled? Why her eyes lowered? Why on the side of the road? Why limp in the straw? I am the girl! I am the god! I am the voice! I am the song! I am the night! And I can answer! I can arrange it! I can say rise, and I can say speak! And I am her! And I am she! And I, I, I, I am the answer!
i hope i never get described as gormless. i couldn't ever fathom being without my gorm
can't believe it's the last week of Vamp Summer (city council of darkness and the vampire lestat both airing). can't believe i'm left to deal still w/ an annoying blonde vampire prince and it's not even zaeth. smh

Series: The Animals of Farthing Wood (1993-1995)
Composer: Detlev Kühne
amc iwt/tvl has had since it's beginning a tension - whether the audience sees it or not (certainly i didn't watching s1, it came from reading abt the books in the wait for s2) - between being an adaptation written by people who have the full arc & scope of the story, what the characters will do/become (compare to something like game of thrones, which it seems suffered once it had to start winging it), while also playing around w/ the plots/themes etc to tell a version of this story that can surprise people
there's also the tension between that scope that seems to exist in each book, and the relatively short seasons they have to tell that story within (worth keeping this in mind when comparing the pacing of tvl to iwtv - the original plan was not to tell louis' story in two seasons. another tension - the fact that tvl probably would have benefitted from the same, and the fact that it takes so long for them to write/produce/edit seasons of this show means it's probably best for them to cram story if they don't want to still be making this 15 years from now)
tension too between the shows' desire to dig in deeply (sometimes) to themes of race and incest and abuse and power imbalances and exploitation and rape in a deeper way than i think anne rice tended to, but it is still ultimately beholden to the stories she told where these things didn't always have meaning, or were in some fashion romanticised/blunted/defanged (pun intended)
and tension again in this season specifically between telling this story from lestat's perspective and doing all the necessary work to write this guy not as I'm sure they might be tempted to sometimes - the version of lestat i think his biggest fans have in their head, whoever he ends up being by he time tvc reached their conclusion -but instead a deeply fucked up individual who's hurt and traumatized and ofc unable to see anything very clearly let alone kindly and then the writers' room being The whitest it has been, the least capable of engaging w/ themes of race/indulging in the Hot Mess Lestat of it all for the most part at the expense of a more intentional/thoughtful version of this story
and from the fans perspectives, i suppose, the tension between this version of the show and the show many of us fell in love with and this season (though this ties back in to that first part, and i do think there's a level of personal responsibility if you listened to these ppl say for four years, yeah we're gonna get to tvl we're gonna gete lestat's story and somehow got surprised by what 's3' ended up doing)
and allllllll of this is to say, that i think part of the reason the discourse for this show is usually so. like bad. is because all that shit gets conflated and mixed up and misunderstood/ignored in favour of going ummmmmm did anyone notice lestat wasn't really giving Romantic Hero right there. and then there's also this thread of antiblackness running through the season so why wouldn't ppl be pissed? but that's the shit that's exhausting i guess. lots of necessary critique and then also on top of that absolutely nothing burger hot takes and not wanting anything bad to ever happen on the Bad Things Happening show
