Of course he points out the most obvious constellation, a dragon pointing out a dragon. To not bother looking at the prince, Harlan goes back to studying his work.
It was not very different at all, except for the breeze causing the treesâ leaves to obscure the stars, but it was glorious. He was right, something he hated to admit, for it was only easier to see due to the lack of clouds. The Stormlands were aptly named, making it difficult to see his favorite subject.
The Targaryen didnât seem much like an astronomer, but he did ride. They all used the same tools at their disposal to survive, after all.
âAye, it is,â is all he can mutter out. But this was something he loved, and even though it was unwise to be gesturing out with a prince, he once again looked above and pointed out a particular constellation to the east. âIt often gets obscured, but you can use the King's Crown to guide you home. Your true home to the east.â
Blunter than most, then.
And stupider.
Aenyx hums in response, his gaze, however, remains fixed on the Dragonâs blue eye, which blinks in and out for a moment, before turning his attention to the Stormlander. âSome maesters claim the skies are a reflection of events on the ground. That by reading the stars we can read our fates, too.â he lifts an eyebrow, a slow smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
âAnd even the heavens have seen fit to carry only one crown â interesting how things turned out, isn't it?â he doesnât actually expect a response, and thus continues without pause. âMy home lies north of here, Lord Dondarrion. Just as yours does,â he doesnât point out that nothing but smoke and death awaits Valyrians, and any foolish enough to dare seek out the ruins of the Old Empire should they sail â or fly â into the Smoking Sea. Saying it out loud would only highlight that wishing death on the future king is treason. And Aenyxâs already had his entertainment for the day, no point sullying his good mood with a sour-tempered handless man. Pretending not to notice the slight is the least he could do for one who's lost so much in service of the throne Aenyx represents.
âAre you feeling quite well? Has a maester seen to you, yet? Do you need assistance in returning to camp, my lord? I would hate to have this night end in greater tragedy. Perhaps your good health would be better served resting, than watching the stars.â from this distance, in the darkness, his expression could easily be mistaken for concern.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON S03E07Â â âThe Dragon in Winterâ
for: @star-scry when: the day after the wedding, late afternoon
Aenyx is awake, but barely. His head is pounding and thereâs a bizarre soreness in his limbs making his body twinge from the barest twitch. He gives up trying to move as soon as it registers heâs abed and keeps his eyes firmly closed. What woke him still tugs at him, comforting in its familiarity but odd still â as if it shouldnât belong.
âVandal,â his eyes finally open, vision blurred as his gaze washes over the darkened room, logging the figure beside him but not lingering. His head lolls against the pillow and he looks at the edges of light spilling through the heavy brocade of the drapes covering the windows.
The sight confuses him for a moment. It was night in the last clear memory he has â the cake, the bugs bursting out of it, chairs clanging to the ground as people rushed to their feet, him along with them.
The arrow.
No pain at first, just the mechanical thump of the impact against his shoulder and from there everythingâs a haze. The feeling of people moving about him, garbled words he couldnât guess the meaning of. And the same pull he feels now, failing to answer it in his helplessness. The impulse finally materializes into a coherent thought.
Vandal is here.
In daylight. Â
Aenyx thrashes abruptly, attempting to get up, his weakened body failing to properly obey the command and he ends up rolling on his injured shoulder, the motion ripping a shout out of his dry throat. âWhat happened? If they harmed himâŚâ the words peter out in exhaustion. Father wouldnât allow the Dornish to take another dragon from them. âHelp me up,â his gaze, at last, settles on Daerion. The impetuousness in his tone sinks in too late. âPlease.â he only halfheartedly tries to soften it.
That voice. He hadn't noticed, at first. His back straightened, eyes watching the Prince from afar. Of course he doesn't care about what is going on, instead toying with his prey. How convenient for him to take a walk in the groves to find Harlan led astray.
Harlan's eyes follow Aenyx's form as he comes closer. The sky was different here, he could tell that much, shifting and turning. Yet, there were changes he couldn't understand. His thoughts had not shifted towards a dragon being in the sky - no matter if it was Vasha or Vandal, did it really matter? He kept his distance which Harlan would have appreciated if he had known. Yet, he would've appreciated it even more if Aenyx had done what Vandal was doing right now.
"You hold me in too high of a regard, Prince Aenyx," he remarks. "I am but a novice, and love letters are far below me. Decades ago, perhaps I would give my final words in those letters. But now? No."
An eyebrow quirks questioningly at the choice of preposition â most nobles would at least pretend deference to romance. Aenyx doesnât know Harlan well enough to tell whether the man misspoke, or is just blunter than most. If he were to guess, heâd ungenerously go with the former option and dub him an idiot, not that he would do it to his face. At least not now, barely having been finished with one fight. Tempers might still burn, this is an untouched part of the orchard, best it stays that way. âFortunately, it is not yet time for your final words, my lord â weâve escaped death by the Dornish once again,â he shakes his head in amusement.
âThe night sky is not so different in Dorne, is it? Though, perhaps, we can see more stars here than further north. Fewer clouds. Thereâs the Ice Dragon in its entirety,â his arm half lifts to point upwards, but heâs not close enough to Harlan for that attempt at direction to make any sense.

Rosalynâs smile deepened by the smallest measure. âHow reassuring.â She inclined her head ever so slightly. She did not know what he meant by that. She was not entirely certain she wished to. âThen I shall simply amend my prayers and ask that the Seven preserve your understanding for as long as politics permits.â She had lived at court long enough to know that understandings were among the most fragile things in the realm.
Much like whatever understanding seemed to exist between the two of them at the moment. One she was still trying to acquaint herself with. One she was rather certain he was dangerously close to breaking.
Nothing changed. His words lingered longer than they should have.Â
How strange. She had been left with an entirely different impression. Either she was the only one paying attention to their last conversation, or his memory was far kinder than she had ever given it credit for. She knew neither was true.
So he truly intended to pretend nothing had happened. Even now, when there was no audience to deceive but her, he decided to throw unscrupulous lies at her faceâŚ
The thought almost made her laugh. So this was how he usually felt.
She swallowed the bitter taste of her own medicine with as much grace as she could manage, though the slight tightening at the corners of her mouth betrayed more than she would have liked.
His grip tightening around her arm did not escape her notice. Neither did the subtle attempt to steer the conversation elsewhere. Convenient. She allowed it. Rosalyn had no desire to discover how little restraint either of them still possessed.
âBeautiful,â she admitted. âThough I confess I had imagined it would be harsher. Perhaps the rest of the realm has done Dorne a disservice.â Her gaze drifted briefly toward the palace beyond them. âMy chambers are lovely,â she continued pleasantly. âA generous bed, a view over the gardens, attentive servantsâŚâ Her eyes found his again. âPrincess Deria has been an exceedingly generous hostess, I have wanted for absolutely nothing." A small smile returned. âIn fact, I am beginning to suspect the Dornish intend to make it rather difficult for me to leave.â
Between the two of them, sheâs always been harder to bait â he knows this, yet despite that, her restrained reaction still rankles. He realizes he regrets giving her the opportunity to maintain a civil front, and that heâs miscalculated his commitment to keeping one up to begin with. Reminding himself heâs in a foreign land with precariously peaceful ties with the Iron Throne barely helps and so he disentangles his arm from her as he stops by an orange tree, picking a fruit and beginning to peel it, busying himself with meaningless activity in an effort to distract himself from losing his temper.
âPerhaps â or perhaps it is merely the difference between coming here as foes and being welcomed as guests,â he lifts an eyebrow as he offers her half of the peeled orange. He canât help but think sheâs overplayed her hand, stumbling from courtesy into foolishness in her rush to behave as if everythingâs well between them. Or maybe his anger is no longer simmering and has now boiled over. âBrave words from a daughter of the Reach, but I do suppose youâve always followed wherever your brother went,â he's being uncharitable, not that he particularly cares. His half of the orange sits forgotten in his hand, and is the only reason he hasnât begun peeling another to try and soothe the restlessness in his limbs. âWhatâs a snake pit when youâve survived the dragonsâ den?â thereâs no humor beneath his smirk, though the words are delivered lightly, as mere jest. âYour bed might be generous enough for company, seems a shame to waste the opportunity, no?â
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON S03E04Â â âTumbletonâ

Westerosâ nobles being split into three different groups allowed Harlan to get some fresh air, even if this air was filled with the overwhelming scent of ripening citrus. With the smell, it brought prosperity for its people, but Harlan viewed it as stubbornness. He shouldnât have viewed it as anything less than what he had inside of him, that same stubbornness.
There was something he loved to do at night, and he thought this would be the best opportunity to do so - to look at the stars. He had brought blank parchment, ink, and a quill with him for this very reason. He was the picture of perfect concentration as he jotted things down on his knee.
To anyone, would this be suspicious? Maybe not, but the way his eyes widened, refolding the parchment shut, risking smearing certainly could when someone else came by certainly could. "How long have you been there?" he asks, voice gravely.
Aenyx lets out a tolerant chuckle at the high-strung reaction heâd inadvertently roused from the other man. âFancy yourself an astronomer, Lord Harlan?â he ignores the question and walks closer, angling himself in such a way that itâs clear he isnât seeking to catch a glimpse at whatever the Stormlander guards so jealously. ââ or a poet? Seeking inspiration from this beautiful place to pen a love letter?â his tone is lightly teasing.
Has Dondarrion inspected the sky long enough to notice Vandalâs shadow? Would he even be able to tell what it is he saw? And would he care enough to speak of it to others? Aenyx isnât sure. It might serve one who maybe still harbors aversion towards the Dornish to sow distrust between them and the Targaryens who promised to leave their dragons behind. He doesnât think either Aegon or Deria would be particularly amused by his pointing out Vandal kept only to the skies.
Rosalynâs brows lifted with something almost resembling sympathy. âHow unfortunate.â A thoughtful pause followed. âFrom what I have heard, sharing a bed with someone you disagree with can become quite exhausting.â Her smile remained perfectly pleasant. âI should never wish such an arrangement upon you.â Actively wishing for it would have been beneath her. She merely hoped his days would be filled with every mild inconvenience that good manners allowed one to desire for another. âI shall simply pray the Seven grant you enough patience to settle your⌠differences in due course.â
She bit her tongue. Black mourning silks had seemed ill-suited to a wedding celebration, though she had not been ignorant of how the choice might be perceived. There had been prayers each morning with the Tyrell septa. If anyone cared to notice, they would have. âGrieving is always a challenge, Your Grace.â A quieter smile followed. âMy late good-sister â may the Mother keep her gently â was far kinder than the Dornish sun. I have every confidence she would forgive the omission.â She adjusted her arm lightly within his. âI should be rather more concerned if she did not.â
A humorless laugh escaped her before she could stop it. âDoes my satisfaction still concern you, Your Grace?â She did not know why they continued to do this.
Every conversation had become a careful exercise in deciding which truths to conceal and which half-truths to offer in their place. Because whenever one of them slipped, even for a moment, the rest followed, until words became weapons and every sentence was thrown with the intention of drawing blood.
Just as they had done the last time.
She had promised herself she would not allow herself to be drawn into it again. She would not seek him out. She would not meet his eyes.
And yet, there she was.
Again.
Somehow, she always found her way back to him.
âI suppose one dance will not bring the realm to ruin.â It could, perhaps, ruin them. But neither of them had ever been strangers to fire or blood. The realm would survive another day, just as it always had, and watch them make precisely the same mistakes.
Maybe Aenyx fucked up, maybe his expectation of a better political match has been misplaced â the king hasnât sought to make life easier for him in a quite a while, after all. Perhaps he shouldnât have assumed the stability of the realm weighed more heavily to his father than his ambition.
And even though Rosalyn wouldnât stoop as low as to openly gloat about the quandary he now finds himself in, she also doesnât need to for him to understand sheâs pleased as punch that something heâs so assertively withheld from her has so spectacularly backfired. Since heâs considered the Tyrells too controversial for a royal match, now he had to contend with tying his future to the one family on the entire continent who might challenge his for unpopularity. He knows heâs in no position to request even a crumb of grace from her â not that he would, even if heâd considered his stance stronger.
âSuch a scandalous thing to be in a position to hear about,â he tuts, mock scandalized. âWell, in my experience, exhausting bedmates are preferable, Lady Rosalyn,â he leans in slightly, playing at camaraderie, an amused smirk dancing on his lips. âShall pray?â he questions the future tense. âI suppose the gods must favor me without your help then, as me and my betrothed have already reached an understanding.â understanding, but no attempt at familiarity yet, though he cannot blame that on the Martell alone, the hesitation comes from both.
His gaze washes over her attire again, mostly not listening to her rationalizations, if only because he doesnât deem them interestingâŚor necessary. Whoever keeps her good sister now, he's confident she no longer holds any interest in the actions of the living, at least.
He tries to keep them in the shade as they leisurely walk, though thereâs precious little of that to be found with the sun now so high in the sky. The advantage to this is that most people have sought succor from the unforgiving brightness indoors, and the pathways are all but deserted. The heat never really bothered him, anyway. âWhy shouldnât it?â he hums, glancing at her from the corner of his eye. âNothing changed between us since last we spoke,â a bit of a strain on the truth â sheâd refused his offer, but Aenyx considers himself magnanimous enough to forget about it. Or at least pretend to.
Her comment provoked a chuckle out of him and his grip around her arm tightens slightly as he pulls her imperceptibly closer. âNo, I suppose it wonât. A wedding might, though,â luckily for the six kingdoms, it would first be put to the test in Dorne. Give the rest of them more time, and more knowledge to improve things for the second. âSo how are you finding Dorne, so far? Are your quarters to your liking?â Aenyx finds himself wanting to gloss over his previous remark. Too much of a sensitive subject and he is sure talking to her about it would only make it worse.

Rosalyn had not expected to find herself enjoying the dance lessons as much as she had. There was something rather appealing about watching people move with such ease, untouched by the rigid precision of the court dances she had known all her life.Â
Still, she found her attention wandering more than once. Every turn of the circle, every exchange of partners, her gaze seemed to find its way back to him.
Rosalyn had not expected to see Aenyx among the dancers.
Not because she doubted his ability to learn, but because she remembered a time when Aenyx Targaryen had seemed convinced that the world ought to bend before he ever considered bending with it.
When he quietly excused himself from the lesson, Rosalyn remained where she was. She had no particular intention of leaving. The music was pleasant enough, and there were still several dances to come.
She lingered just long enough for the decision to appear entirely unrelated.
Only then did she excuse herself with an apologetic smile, stepping away from the gathering in search of quieter company, or quieter air, should anyone ask. Finding the Crown Prince along the way was merely a fortunate coincidence.
âI must confess, Your Grace,â Rosalyn began as she fell into step beside him, âI find myself rather impressed.â After all, it would have been terribly impolite not to greet him.
âI never imagined I should see the day.â Her eyes travelled over him with quiet consideration, lingering only a moment longer. âYou, embracing Dornish customs so readily. Taking dance lessons with admirable graceâŚâ Her gaze swept over him with quiet deliberation. âDressed so convincingly in Dornish silksâŚâ A thoughtful pause followed, a faint smile curving at the corner of her lips. âAnd without your dragon, no less.â
She folded her hands neatly before her. âI suppose time truly does change people.â Another pause. âOr perhaps you have simply discovered that you agree with Dorne more than you once expected.â
Only then did she glance back at him, the smile returning, pleasant, impossible to fault.
âI confess I was almost disappointed to see you leave before fortune saw fit to pair us.â She locked eyes with him. âI should have liked to become acquainted with this newer version of you.â
Aenyx is going to need all the distractions Dorne has to offer if heâs to keep his sanity without Vandal, no matter how tedious he finds them. But itâs the lack of sleep thatâs catching up, as well, half the night spent scouring the skies for stars blinking in and out since he came here. And when he grows tired of following the simplified steps, and the breeze from the open windows stops feeling invigorating, he makes his excuses to those around him and leaves in search of fresher air.
He tells himself he lingers close to the hall because itâs just as good a place as any, or perhaps he might decide to go back once he gets a few minutesâ peace â it certainly isnât because of her, not after how they left things last time, when their usual vague snipes turned into an all-out argument. The most honest theyâve been with each other in a long time, and mainly spoken with the intent to wound. Even so, that sincerity had limits. It was easier to pretend her tears had only been for Gwayne and his anger all about the slight to the dragons, after all.
Yet he cannot feign surprise when he picks up the familiar cadence of the approaching footsteps. âMy lady,â the greeting is uttered blithely, with the meaninglessness of words said so often they lost all import. His smile matches hers â polished, pleasant, not an ounce of earnestness beneath it. Aenyx chuckles indulgently at the hollow praise, taking half a step back to flaunt the colorful, flowing garments heâs chosen to don while here. The movement helps settle the spike of disquiet as she points out his lack of Vandal. He truly believes there is a difference between being incapable of being without his dragon, and simply not wanting to â Aenyx hopes that by the end of this charade, heâll have proven himself to be firmly the latter.
âI agree with Dorne just fine, Lady Rosalyn, itâs the Dornish I find harder to deal with,â he laughs without humor. âAnd you â I suppose mourning your good sister in this heat proved too heavy a challenge,â his examination of her is just as blatant, and he lightly reaches for her arm to entwine with his as they resume strolling. âThe festivities have just begun, perhaps fortune will see fit to correct her oversight. Or better yet, we wonât leave something as dear to me as satisfying you to chance and youâll save me a dance at my sisterâs wedding.â his grin is all teeth.
â open, the water gardens. ( 2 / 3 )
arianne had kept her gaze fixed on her brother and his targaryen bride to be through ceremony. ⸝ measuring the weight of an alliance forged from the ashes of old grievances. luckily, though short lived as eyes of copper warmth caught the encouraging smile of her mother, the final words allowed the tension to yield, the warm dornish sun instead bleeding into the halls like a blanket.
the princess rose from her seat, the silks of her gown brushing against the stone and performed her duties with a smile. it is over not quick enough, and she watches as the crowd dwindles away with parting words. she escapes, before some lord or lady has the bright decision to ask for clarifications.
the water gardens are quiet, empty for a while as the larger part of dorne's visitors had gone to see their horses at the promise of a race. rich marigold a contrast against stone, and she gazes up to the sky with a look of deep in thought. her own future uncertain, and the future of dorne more so. she is momentarily distracted, taken from her own thoughts when company moves to her side, and ever so the gracious host she needs to be, arianne turned to address them. â beautiful, isn't it? my mother's own design. â
âBeautiful,â Aenyx echoes, sounding like he means it. An easy smile rests on his face as their gazes meet, and he nods lightly in greeting, before turning his attention to the gardens. âIt seems your mother is as talented as she is sensible,â he comments airily, the words flowing naturally, as though sincerely believed.
A bothersome dance to perform, certainly, made more so by the future closeness theyâre supposed to symbolize, but princes donât get the luxury of choice. Theyâll have the rest of their lives to get to truly know each other, honesty so early on would do more harm than good to the apparent cooperation theyâve barely found between them.
âApologies for the intrusion, I merely wanted to take advantage of most guests being sidetracked to enjoy a turn through the gardens in peace.â and more importantly, quiet. A trip that would have taken him less than a day on dragonback ballooned in over a fortnight across the sea. Still, better than more than thrice that, had he travelled by land, but to one as lacking in patience as Aenyx, better is no comfort when he should have had best. âIt seems the races will be a popular attraction among your Northern guests.â
( tyriq withers, cis male, he/him ) HARK! I believe the heralds are announcing the arrival of AENYX TARGARYEN, the TWENTY9 year old,  CROWN PRINCE OF of THE IRON THRONE. They are known to hold loyalty towards THE CROWN/THEMSELVES and little birds sing of them being INSIGHTFUL & SELF-ASSURED. When one dreams of them, images of âI ETCH MY OWN FACE UPON MY WICKED FLESH; I AM MY OWN DEVASTATING GODâ; âI NEVER SAW EYES LIKE THAT, THAT COLOR, THAT VICIOUS FIREâ'; âYES YOU WILL RISE FROM THE ASHES, BUT THE BURNING COMES FIRSTâ comes to mind . However their MERCURIAL & REMORSELESS nature can make for difficult times. Time will only tell what their true intentions are. *rider of the dragon VANDAL
