ok so remember that MSME loan guarantee scheme post I made? plot twist, it got updated and nobody told anyone
so a while back I wrote about the Mutual Credit Guarantee Scheme for MSMEs (MCGS-MSME) — the one that lets small manufacturers get big equipment loans (up to ₹100 crore) without collateral, backed by a government guarantee. cool scheme, kind of a niche interest of mine apparently.
turns out it got quietly modified in March 2026 and almost nobody covered it. like, the original launch got press coverage, and then the actual improvement to the scheme just... didn't. most articles about it online are still describing the old 2025 rules. so here's the update, because somebody should say it out loud.
what changed:
service sector businesses can now apply. the original scheme was manufacturing-only in spirit — it was all about buying plant and machinery. now service sector MSMEs are explicitly included.
the equipment-spend rule got easier. you used to need at least 75% of your total project cost going toward the actual machinery/equipment. that's now down to 60%, which gives businesses more room to include installation, setup, whatever else comes with a big purchase.
you get some of your upfront money back. borrowers still put down 5% of the loan upfront, but now 1% of that comes back to you each year starting year 4, as long as you're not defaulting.
guarantee tenure is now a flat 10 years. clearer long-term picture for both the bank and the borrower.
but honestly, the bigger deal is this: exporters got their own separate track now.
if your business has exported at least 25% of its sales turnover in each of the last 3 years, you don't fall under the general rules anymore — you get a genuinely better deal:
loans up to ₹20 crore
75% guarantee coverage instead of the standard 60%
upfront contribution drops to just 2%, capped at ₹40 lakh (down from the standard 5%)
no guarantee fee in year one, then a flat 0.50% per year after that
if you're an exporter who looked at guarantee schemes before and thought "eh, doesn't really apply to me" — this is worth a second look now.
if you want the exact eligibility rules before talking to a lender, NCGTC has the current terms here — worth checking directly since a lot of secondary sources online still haven't caught up with the March 2026 version.
anyway. this is what I do for fun now, apparently. government MSME schemes. living my best life.
