XOR is a type of computer thing! Who doesn't love discussing gender in computer logic terms? I mean, okay, probably not most people, and I realize that, but bear with me, because here in a minute, you're going to love it too.
XOR, (the Exclusive Or Operation) analyzes two variables to see if the combination of them is valid.
An XOR run on gender would look something like this:
If Male = True and Female = True: Not valid.
If Male = True and Female = False: Valid.
If Male = False and Female = True: Valid.
If Male = False and Female = False: Not valid.
Enforcing an XOR of gender (that is to say, "exorsexism" or "exonormativity" as I am currently calling it) basically states that the only allowable genders are wholly, exclusively male and wholly, exclusively. To be neither or both (that is to say, to be non-binary) is not considered valid.
So, until someone is like, "this is a bad word for actual valid reasons," or someone says, "yeah but consider this other word that is totally better," I'm going with it."
