My thoughts on Superman (2025)

This was such a good movie. It was so strange walking out of the cinema feeling hopeful and excited for the DCU. The world needs superhero movies that actually feel like superhero movies again. The movie took itself seriously but also wasn't afraid to be goofy and fun. Although there were a couple of tense moments where they threw in a joke or added in humour unnecessarily (in my opinion).

Lex being Superman's no. 1 hater despite never meeting him was incredible! And while he's trying to process meeting him in the flesh Superman is just screaming "WHERE'S THE DOG?" Peak cinema.

Solid 8/10.

And this has definitely convinced me to get back into comics. I stopped reading a few years ago. The community was getting kind of stale and the shitty comic book "dude bros" were making enjoying new releases impossible because they were being so hateful unnecessarily.

Now I want to get back into it properly. I've got some Batman titles on my shelves that I never go around to reading. I've already picked up Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in anticipation for the DCU's Supergirl, releasing 26 June, 2026. I've just started reading Dark Knights of Steel - a 12 issue limited series where a bunch of characters from the world's of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are in a medieval fantasy world preparing for their kingdoms to go to war with each other.

I'm gonna be a lot more active on here in the coming weeks.

So I haven't logged into Tumblr for several years but the other day I had the random urge to come back. I'd totally forgotten how intense my love for DC Comics was before the pandemic. I scrolled all through my blog posts and it felt like I'd come back to my parent's house and found my old stuffed toys, like a warm comforting hug.

My focus the last few years has shifted from reading comic books to reading fantasy novels and just fiction in general but recently I'm losing my love for that community because, well, it isn't one. Staying up to date with every fantasy book release is exhausting and the community makes it feel like if you haven't read them all then you can't call yourself a reader. Its so stupid and just not welcoming.

I'm a pretty big Lady Gaga fan and am always excited to see all of her creative projects. I saw the trailer for Joker Folie à Deux and had some big feeling over it. I thought my interest for this movie was just for Gaga but that's not true at all. I started thinking about Harley and the wider DC Comics universe and how much I used to love it.

Back in 2019 I started working at my local cinema just as the first Joker movie came out and I was obsessed. I'd time my screen checks so I could catch all my favourite movie scenes while on shift.

Not long after this I got less and less involved with DC Comics releases and fandom updates. I had some gripes with how the comics were being published and took major issues with how trade paperbacks (hardbacks too) were being sold in the UK, honestly the prices just got ridiculous. It just priced out newbies and made those of us who'd been collecting for years feel a little cheated.

I've just seen the new DC paperbacks being released over the next few months, lots of classic stories being rereleased in smaller bind ups for an affordable price (under £10). I hope DC Comics have finally realised keeping up with comics is so so expensive and are taking steps to keep the fanbase going socially and economically.

I'm getting distracted.

Essentially, I saw the new Joker trailer, remembered how much I loved the first movie. Then logged back into Tumblr and remember all the love I had for Harley Quinn, the BatFam and the DC Comics canon in general. Oh and Gotham. Gotham, Gotham, Gotham. I can't even describe how much I loved that show and what it did for me in my early adulthood. I'm definitely due a re-watch.

I've also seen the current run of Harley Quinn has new trades coming out next month and over the next several months. It'll be a good time for me to see what the 2024 Harley is like by jumping in with Volume 1, releasing September 24th. Oh, and I'm going to reread Amanda and Jimmy's Harley run because its incredible.
