SEO is something business owners hear about all too often. Whether it’s emails, phone calls or friend requests, it seems like overseas ‘experts’ are trying to sell it everywhere they can. But just what even is SEO, and why should a business owner care? Search engine optimization is the practice of encouraging Google, Yahoo or Bing to show your business in their listings when someone searches for something that might be on your website. In the old days if someone needed a plumber, they would open the yellow phone book, navigate to the “P” section and find an alphabetical list of plumbers to call. Google strives to provide the most useful results to searchers so that they would continue to use Google (and therefore click on their ads occasionally). However Google realizes that if Google was entirely covered with ads then people would stop using Google altogether. An article on search engine watch explains the surprising difference. (Remember too that Ads always show up before organic search results.) “Search engine users overwhelmingly click on organic results on Google and Bing by a margin of 94 percent to 6 percent. How do they do this? SEO Experts agree that there are many ‘ranking factors’ that can affect your web pages placement in Google’s algorithm for particular keywords. While they don’t always agree on which factors are more important, they do agree on what the factors actually are. On-page content, link authority, and geography are some of the most commonly cited ranking factors. Many studies have been done on the subject, Search Engine Journal wrote about the 4 most important factors according to various industry experts. “SEO is an ever-evolving industry. In the past few years, we’ve seen Google make a steady push for [1] rich content, [2] quality links, and a [3] perfect mobile experience. [4] Other ranking factors are certainly important and will play a role in your rankings, but if you prioritize improving elements of your website related to these factors, then you’ll come out ahead of the competition.” Search Engine Journal Now that you understand what the factors are, it’s simple to connect the dots. To show up on searches for any specific keyword, you need to make sure a page on your website outshines your competitors for all those main factors. This is easier said than done however. Large fortune 500 companies will often recruit an in house SEO team to manage this process. Smaller companies tend to either do it themselves, or hire outside SEO consultants.
