I’m Filipino and proud 👏🏼 of 👏🏼 it. 🇵🇭 I’m part of the AAPI community and I stand with you. My family immigrated to the U.S. when I was 5 years old and there’s been a duality to my existence that I know many can relate to. I’m too Americanized to feel at home when I visit the Philippines and too Filipino to really feel American. I felt out of place for years and thought I *had* to assimilate to be accepted — play small and don’t cause a scene, pls thx. As I’ve grown older, I realized that if I continue to look to others to fully accept me I’ll be looking forever. I honor my heritage. I celebrate my culture. I speak my truth. I reclaim my power. I don’t have to break down my lineage. I don’t have to teach you how to speak my language. I don’t have to convince you to like our cuisine. I don’t have to explain anything so you can feel better. I can if I want to, but that’s my power and grace to give. If you can’t accept who I am or where I come from that’s a *you* problem. It’s not my work to do. My parents sacrificed everything to build a new life here and give their kids more than they could’ve hoped for. I’m eternally grateful and proud of that.
