I remember my HS teacher did a visual experiment with us. He showed us a 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper with 0s all over it in 12 pt font. He asked us just how many we sheets until we get 1,000 zeros? 10,000? 100,000? 100,000? He showed us a box of paper and asked us if that was enough to be 100,000. We all said “Well yeah!” Wrong! Then he asked us how much until 1,000,000? SOOO many boxes FULL of those 8 ½ X 11 sheets. The visual experiment was for us to have some tangible idea of how many lives were lost in the Holocaust. We just couldn’t believe it. Once you put it into perspective, give it a visual, it’s just SO much.

It contains the names of ALL known victims of the Holocaust, including where they were born, their birth date, and where they died. There is room at the end for more names to be added as they are discovered.

Anon submission: In the last two years, I remembered a warning my mother gave me when I was about 16. She pulled me aside very suddenly one day and told me “I want to tell you something. No matter what, you have to remember: you are always a Jew before you are an American.”At the time, I was fairly proud of being an American. And I asked her why? My mother got tears in her eyes and told me “if something ever happens here, being a good American won’t be enough to save you.”

My grandfather. A man who in the 1970's was an adviser to the White House on trade and testified on the same before Congress, told all 5 (at the time) of his grandkids this out of the blue one day. I think when most of your family are patriots in Germany in the days before Weimar and then are killed by their government, it sticks with you that the government you fight for, can still turn on you.
