Intercontinental when I eat French Toast

*Photo Credit: Chris Machian, Omaha World-Herald Midwest Gothic is the monsters that slither around the stranded cars, waiting to devour the men and women who come to the rescue. The monsters are real. They are frozen water moving far too fast, picking up speed as it spills over roadways and levees and dikes, made of barely melted ice forged on a frozen plain. It is the skeletal husk of a 100 year old dam, torn apart and sitting in bare mud while the river it wooed, loved, married, laughs and roars away in a new bed. It is the wide, flat fields becoming their namesake; Flat Water. It is cattle drowning and freezing at the same time, while ranchers frantically try to rescue them, and no one to help, and no high ground, because the prairie IS the high ground, laying level above the channels cut by 80,000 miles of creeks and streams and rivers, that feed the farms, until they themselves get hungry. It is fields that will lie fallow, their topsoil carried off downriver, and a hungry nation ignoring our plight until their food prices skyrocket. Midwest Gothic is apparently also when half your state is threatened with historically high flood waters; levees breached, one entire dam completely destroyed and washed down river, along with several bridges, towns completely isolated by washed out roads, and on Saturday national news media outlets finally comment on it, without mentioning that Nebraska has been in a state of emergency since TUESDAY.

It’s when Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, who represents a significant part of the areas with major flooding, posts a FB message to his followers saying that Nebraskans are tough and we need to depend on each other and state and local authorities, and essentially that we don’t need any federal fucking aide because we’re super DIY.

Some artists have thick skin and can take it in stride as ‘ah, behold, this person is upset and I won’t take it as a personal attack’…but for others? Especially younger artists, or artists who don’t have a lot of experience or confidence? That’ll not only crush them, but it’ll also may result in Aywas losing yet another valuable member of its breeding teams.

Making the wait times even worse.

Personally I’m glad I can’t see all of it, because believe it or not, there are users that are particularly nasty in the feedback. I’m not talking about valid critique either. On top of the garbage we get in general, direct toxicity like that would have made me quit ages ago.
