”I chase my blood from brain to thumped heart until I’m out of breath from trying…”
BIOGRAPHY:
Erica Roth went from daddy’s little girl to the girl your parents warned you about in the span of a year. She was born and raised as an only child in a small suburban area in New Jersey. To her knowledge, her father was a pharmacist that constantly traveled for business. Her mother was a quiet, mousey woman that rarely raised her voice to anyone. Looking on it, she knows all the signs were there. Her dad was never home, and when he was, he always showered them with gifts before running away again. Sometimes, he’d come home reeking of gin and cigarettes. Those nights, Erica hid in her room, not wanting to ask the wrong questions and anger him. His temper was never too severe, but his yelling was enough to send her running.
It wasn’t too hard to put two and two together. Her dad was cheating. A tiny bit of research brought her to the website of Michael Roth… a famous stock broker in New York City. Angered but knowing better, Erica kept the information to herself, and doing so has caused her problems down the line. She internalized that feeling of betrayal and sadness, which caused her to turn to cutting and pill popping to help sooth the pain. In such a small town, her vices didn’t go unnoticed. She went from straight A’s to D’s, and her friend group of dozens dwindled down to few. The only positive thing that came out of it all was her love for fashion. She learned how to express herself through her clothing, and people took notice. Everyone encouraged her to apply to art schools and try to get some scholarships, but Erica wasn’t even sure she wanted to attend college anymore. What if her mother needed her? As if it was fated, around the time of college applications, a man came to see her. His name was Marcus Roth and the resemblance of the two was obvious. He was her brother. Marcus lived in New York City and invited her to stay with him anytime. Weirdly enough, the next week, she received an acceptance into Parson’s School of Design. She didn’t even remember applying. But then again, she didn’t remember doing anything anymore.
She’s been living with Marcus for a little over a year now in a loft on the upper west side, and life with just the two of them is perfect to her. They apparently have another sister, Seline, but Mark keeps telling her that Seline wouldn’t react well to the knowledge of another sibling. School is going great, her brother is great, and the fact he can supply her addiction doesn’t hurt, either. She knows it’s only a matter of time before she runs into her father, but Erica’s trying to avoid it at all costs. All she wants is to graduate from college, get a job as a designer on 5th avenue, and make a name for herself. She won’t let fucking daddy issues get in the way of that.
PRESENT:
Erica is 21 years old now and is a Senior Year at Parson’s School for Design. As it’s her last year, she decided she’d like to give it a try at living on campus. Having lived with her new, estranged brother Marcus Roth and going from feeling extremely welcomed to completely abandoned, Erica decided her life would be much better suited on campus in the city, closer to the activities of her senior year. She is rooming with two other fashion design students who happen to be a part of her design team for her senior project. Because of her talents and her connections with the high society of New York, Erica currently interns at Versace and works under the direction of Donatella Versace. Things family-wise are tense. Her mother misses her back home, Marcus has become belaboring, and the prospect of their father, Michael Roth, coming back into the picture with the up and coming Gladiators looms over her conscious. The only good things are that she and Seline seem to be getting along better now; and, low and behold, Erica recently learned that she inherited a fortune from her father’s investments that he had signed off to her when she turned 21 years old. This income that has been promised to her seemed to plop out of the sky. Erica struggles with needing the money, and hating where it came from, but also appreciating the gift and wondering if Michael really did look after her after all, even after all the time of not being around in her childhood.
