Ghidorah’s hatchday!

The sun has risen once more. Birds are chirping and singing. The warm breeze of the island brush their gold-plated scales. One head opens his eyes to the light shining through the cave’s entryway, it’s the middle head, Ichi.

He checked his surroundings, noticing both of his brothers still sound asleep, the right one drooling all around the rocky ground and the left one in a very uncomfortable position, to Ichi at least, his neck was all twisty and his head rested on top of it. Ichi decided to leave him that way, no need to bother him.

He realized it would be very rude to wake them up. Usually, if the middle head wakes up first, he wakes up his other brothers for the day. This time though, he decided to let them sleep. He felt really tired himself too, so he tried to rest a bit more.

Unfortunately, this peace would be slightly disrupted. The middle head had caught onto a sound coming from outside their cave. It sounded like wings flapping and assumed a titan was coming to their island. He woke up his brothers. It could be danger. As Ichi nudged his brothers and called out to them, both heads groaned, turned and complained, hoping to be left alone.

Eventually, after much struggling, both heads had finally woken up and immediately noticed the sound the middle head was talking about. Although this particular sound seemed familiar… very familiar.

It was “him” again… wasn’t it?

The same titan that showed them this island, the same titan that was the first to bow to them when they ruled the planet. Rodan.

They made their way out of the cave, onto broad daylight, scales shining thanks to the sun’s rays, and looked upwards towards the blue sky, very few clouds floated overhead, so spotting the titan was extremely simple. When he noticed he was spotted, he immediately swooped down to land a few meters away and made his way over to the three headed dragon.

The three pairs of eyes pierced him harshly, and a strike of nervousness got to him, but he composed himself and broke the silence.

“Hi” He said, his voice did not sound so confident.

“What do you want?” Ichi replied to him sternly, not taking his eyes off of him for a single moment.

“Sorry if I, uhh, interrupted your sleep-”

“You did” The right head, Ni, said in a very furious tone, as he always did to everyone.

“Let the bird speak, Ni” Ichi said to him and motioned for Rodan to continue.

“Thank you…? Anyways, uhh, again, hi… I just came around to say hi, that’s all” That was a definitely a lie.

“I don’t believe you, Rodan. What is the reason you’re here?” The middle head said to the bird.

“Okay, okay, I just have a question” He inhaled and continued “When is your hatchday? I’ve noticed you’re the only titan that doesn’t have one so I wanted to, like, know when it is so we can prepare you a little party” He finished and waited for a response, it somewhat gave him a little chill, but he shook it off.

The three heads stayed silent, analyzing whatever the bird had said, a hatchday? A party? What does that mean? Ichi assumed it was some tradition on this planet, but it was better to inquire more on the details, seems the bird knows more about it anyways.

The silence was eternal for Rodan, which made the conversation feel very awkward, but he didn’t let it get to him.

Ichi finally broke the silence “Pardon us? What does that mean?” He asked the bird, hoping for some clarification for himself and his brothers.

Rodan replied “Oh, figures, you’re not from here” He paused and continued “A hatchday is basically a tradition we do here. We celebrate the day you came to life because you lived another year! At least that’s how Godzilla explained it to me, very angrily might I add… He doesn’t like them” He chuckled “Anyways, lemme ask again, when did you… come to life?” He motioned to them and waited for an answer.

The silence struck again, but this time it wasn’t as eternal as the last. Ichi found himself thinking… such celebration is risible. He couldn’t find any purpose in it. But at the same time, and surprisingly, he didn’t want to be rude, the bird’s eyes were gleaming with joy and expectation. He looked over to Ni and San, both brothers were waiting to see what the middle head would say.

Sadly though, as much as he wanted to see where this hatchday idea would go, he had bad news that would definitely dishearten the bird, and spoke them out loud.

“We don’t know”

Rodan widened his eyes at this statement. To Ghidorah what they said seemed normal, but to Rodan it looked like it was a heavy shock.

“Y-you don’t know? Surely there must be some hint of the day, right?”

“Like I said, we don’t know,” Ichi said. “We never knew. We never thought of keeping track of it”

“Are you sure?” Rodan said. “C’mon there has to be something, I’ll give you mine as an example, my hatchday is the 26th day of 12th month…” He paused for a second and realized that, once again, Ghidorah is not from this planet so they wouldn’t know how titans here measure the dates “…okay nevermind that…”

Ichi, as embarrassing as this is, couldn’t understand anything of what the bird had just said “The 26th of whatever do you mean?” He said in complete confusion. He could tell his brothers were feeling the same.

“Well, let me explain,” he said, regaining some confidence once more “Titans here distribute days in 12 months, each month has 30 or 31 days, while only the second month has 28 days, or 29 every four years. A year passes when all the 12 months have completed all their days. As an example, today is the 23rd day of the 8th month. The year is… I don’t remember, but you get the idea right?”

“Simple enough,” Ichi replied after analyzing it. Seems his brothers understood as well.

“I don’t see the point,” Ni interrupted in his very usually guttural voice.

“Well… we’ve always done it” Rodan replied to Ni before turning to Ichi again “By any chance, does it ring any bells? Any idea of your hatchday?”

“No.”

“Well… this makes things harder” Rodan said as he showed obvious signs of being disappointed, he really wanted to carry out this idea.

“What’s this for, anyways?” San, the left head, interjected and inquired.

Rodan looked up at San and replied “Wanted to do something nice since you live on this planet now”

Something nice? To them? The titan that tried to kill everything and terraform the same planet they’re now living on? Surely the bird must be joking…

After a very awkward silence, Rodan brightened up once again “Oh! I have an idea! Wait here,” he sparked up and took off into the sky at a great speed. Ghidorah watched him fly away until the bird couldn’t be seen anymore over the clouds.

He’ll be back soon enough, especially with how energetic and fast he is.

“That was something,” Ni said

“I don’t see the point of this hatchday tradition, but I’m not going to stop him.” Ichi said serenely. “I’ll let him do what he wants”

“Whatever…”

“I’m curious myself, to be honest” San said to Ichi.

“We’ll see what it is eventually I believe” Ichi replied.

Ghidorah decided to do their usual daily routine for the time being. Sunbathe, clean their scales, hunt for food, etc. Just like they always did.

Hours passed and Ghidorah found themselves resting on the sand. Their scales shining the brightest gold, just how they like it.

Their peace would be disturbed once again, as the same “flapping wings” sound started showing itself again, but there was something else with it too…

It was the sound of the surface of the water being broken, and in the distance, some very familiar dorsal plates started to be visible.

Oh no. Why is he here?

Ichi looked visibly annoyed and groaned, rolling his eyes; Ni bared his fangs, almost ready to fight, but he was sure he wasn’t going to be allowed; and lastly San sighed at the sight. He didn’t want to see this lizard again.

Ghidorah stood up and watched as the pair neared their island. Rodan reached it first and landed next to Ghidorah. He looked up at them and noticed the expressions on their faces. They were not pleased at all.

“Uhh… Sorry…?” Rodan said to them.

“Why him? Why did you bring him here?!” Ichi yelled, whatever the idea Rodan had he already didn’t like it.

“Okay, lemme explain. He may help us figure out your hatchday, seriously. It’ll be fine” He said trying to calm them down, but ultimately failing.

“What is HE going to know?” Ni growled at him.

“Look, you’ll see when he arrives, trust me”

Ni kept growling, showing his sharp teeth before stopping and turning away after a few moments.

While not pleased, Ghidorah stood their ground and waited for the lizard to arrive to the coast.

After much waiting, Godzilla finally reached the island. He rose from the water and shook it all off from his fur. He glared at Ghidorah and they glared back at him.

Godzilla walked towards the beach, not taking his eyes off of the three headed dragon. His glare looked like it could pierce an entire building without even touching it and Ghidorah’s could easily rip a planet apart. Finally, Godzilla reached the beach and stopped in front of Ghidorah, both stood their ground and were ready to claw at each other to death. Their eyes could tell everything.

“Are you guys done?” The silence was broken “We’re not here to fight” Rodan said.

Both titans glanced at him before turning back to each other, baring their fangs and with all the intent to kill each other.

“Please?”

“Okay fine!” Godzilla said and turned to him “Why did you bring me here again, Rodan?” He asked him, breaking eye contact with the three headed titan.

“Okay!” He said enthusiastically “So basically, I wanted to learn when Ghidorah’s hatchday is, and I thought maybe you could give us an idea” He told him.

Godzilla jerked back, looking confused, and glanced at Ghidorah for a moment before turning to the bird again “Why me?” He asked him.

“Uhh…” Good question “I thought you could help us… maybe?”

“I have no idea how I can be of help, Rodan” Godzilla said sternly “I know next to nothing about them”.

“How flattering” Ichi said mockingly, which immediately made Godzilla look back at them with anger, but he very much did not want to fight right now. He wishes he could just go back to sleep.

“Hmm…” Rodan found himself deep in thought and came up with another idea “Oh… do you maybe remember some… memorable date with Ghidorah?”

“Memorable? More like the opposite” Godzilla remarked.

“How flattering” Ichi repeated, smirking at him which obviously made Godzilla more mad than before. He wanted to grab this stupid dragon by the neck and choke it but he’s so tired…

“Well… is there anything at least?” Rodan inquired to Godzilla again.

“There are… a bunch…” He turned to Ghidorah “Though one that stays is the day you arrived here.” He said as a growl escaped him and bared his teeth at the hydra. The middle head only smirked back and Ni and San watched intently. San wanted to laugh at the lizard and Ni just wanted to bite his face off.

“The day they… OH!” Rodan lit up in excitement “That is actually perfect, Goji!! When was that?”

“I wish I could forget to be honest” He exclaimed before answering “It was the 20th day of the 12th month” He finished with very obvious zero enthusiasm.

“This could be perfect Goji! Thank you, I knew you’d be of help, I’ll be right back” Rodan said an took off into the sky with a smile on his beak. The three headed titan was sure he was going to be back again. Ghidorah and Godzilla only watched until he wasn’t visible anymore.

The two titans went to back to glare at each other. A tense silence had filled the air and both were ready to tear at each other’s throats.

Minutes passed and not a word had been spoken, at this point the middle head and Godzilla were baring their teeth, ready to pounce and attack, but that moment never arrived. Finally the tense moment was broken by Godzilla himself. “I’m not going to fight you. Not right now” He said as started to turn away.

The trio of heads slightly lowered their guard, they were ready to defend themselves at whatever Godzilla was going to do, but he had turned to leave now. Ichi decided to mock him “Scared?” He said smirking.

“No” He answered without a shred of hesitation “Just tired”. He started making his way back to the ocean, back to his home, to sleep again.

Ichi sighed. Crisis averted, for now at least. The trio watched the lizard swim away until he finally hid himself under the water. Ghidorah turned away and Ichi glanced at the sky, expecting Rodan to be back, but that probably won’t happen until at least a few hours.

“I guess our hatchday is officially the date the lizard said?” San asked his brother.

“Seems so…” Ichi said. He wondered why the bird was going to such lengths just for something that has no purpose, but he didn’t want to ruin the bird’s fun. He’s in no position to say no to him anyways… That thought definitely hurt his pride and ego.

Ghidorah made their way back to their cave. The sun was slowly setting now. This time of the day is cozier over there and it seems the bird wasn’t going to be back anytime soon, better take a little extra rest in the meantime.

It was now dark, the white moon shone over the ocean and the wind had a perfect temperature for relaxation. There were barely any clouds in the sky, and the sound of the crashing waves could be heard on the distance.

The bird hadn’t come back.

Probably something happened, Ichi didn’t give it much thought and his brothers certainly looked like they weren’t thinking about it. San was exploring his surroundings as his curiosity took over and Ni was... well, trying to escape reality.

Ghidorah made their way to the back of the cave and prepared to sleep, they sat down, rested their wings on each side, lowered their tails on the rocky ground and easened their body. It’s definitely been a more hectic day than usual. The left and right head subsequently laid on the ground with their eyes closed.

As soon as Ichi was going to do the same, a roar was heard in the sky… A very familiar one, and that “flapping wings” sound followed afterwards. Both his brothers and himself looked towards the cave’s exit.

Seems he returned after all. Although very late…

Ghidorah lifted themselves up and headed outside. The bird landed soon afterwards and made his way towards Ghidorah. He dusted himself off and looked up at them.

“Hey” He quickly said.

“Hi” The middle head responded.

“Okay, so… I went back to my volcano real quick. I may be preparing a little something for you”.

“So… our hatchday is officially… uh…” it’s been some time, Ichi already forgot.

“20th of the 12th month, yes, I make it official, since we don’t have an exact date, the day you arrived is perfect! At least for me,” Rodan said with enthusiasm and chuckled a bit.

“Thanks?” San interrupted.

“I hope it’s okay with you, of course,” said the bird.

Ichi answered him “I see no problem with it”.

Rodan looked pleased “Alright! I’ll start to prepare stuff for that day! I’m sure your first hatchday will be amazing, I’ll try to make sure of it.

“We… appreciate it,” Ichi said to him.

“I’m gonna go for now, I’ll let you sleep. Goodnight, Ghidorah”.

Before they could say anything, the bird had already taken off once again, he looked like he was in a hurry, definitely to start preparing that party as soon as possible… although it seems like they have to wait a bit. He said they were in the 8th month right? Ghidorah didn’t think too much about it. They glanced at the sky where the bird was at until his fiery glow wasn’t visible anymore. Then they turned around, headed to the back of their cave and laid down just like they were before the bird arrived.

Finally, the trio drifted off into a heavy sleep, tomorrow will be another day…

Days passed, months passed, some days were extremely boring, others were more interesting, but finally the day had arrived.

Today was supposed to be their hatchday, the 20th day of the 12th month. They had woken up, just like any other day, but it looked normal, it didn’t look out of place or special. Ghidorah did their usual routine, clean their scales, hunt…

It was now the afternoon, the sun was slowly setting in the far distance but the bird hadn’t appeared, nothing had happened at all. They assumed he had forgotten but they didn’t mind, this hatchday celebration didn’t seem all that interesting or important.

Just then, a roar could be heard in the sky, the very same roar a certain very enthusiastic bird makes.

Looks like he didn’t forget after all.

They spotted him and watched as he got closer, he waved at them and eventually landed on the sand, he immediately spoke to them

“Happy hatchday!!!” Rodan exclaimed at them with a smile.

The trio were silent, this is their first hatchday, what are they supposed to do again?

“You’re supposed to say thank you” Said the bird.

“Uh… th-thank you?” Ichi still struggled with saying that. “what are we supposed to do now?”

“Just enjoy the day! I’ll try to make it more fun. Goji is supposed to bring a little something, I just hope he hasn’t eaten it…”

Godzilla is supposed to what?

Just as it was said, those familiar crests could be seen approaching in the far distance. Ghidorah did not look pleased. “Speak of the devil” Rodan whispered.

“How do you expect us to enjoy the day with him?!” Ichi said to the bird.

“Just try, please. It’ll be okay. I already talked to him and he agreed… after I kinda begged him”.

Ichi rolled his eyes and waited for the lizard to arrive.

Minutes passed and he finally reached the coast. The lizard rose from the water and the trio noticed he was holding something, it looked cylindrical and various layers of other cylinders were stacked on top of each other, each becoming smaller than the one below it. It also had some tiny deco on it.

“Say it!” Rodan whispered to the lizard.

Godzilla groaned. “Happy… hatchday” He said with extreme reluctance.

Ichi didn’t even try to say thank you, but the bird was already glaring at them… Might as well say it.

“Thank… you.”

“Can I ask,” San spoke up “what might that thing Godzilla is holding be?”

“The main course!” Rodan answered “We call it hatchday cake! I’m sure you’ll love it. I asked Mothra to make it. She makes the best cakes.” Rodan looked so happy and excited. This “cake” looked like it was made mainly of fish. It didn’t look that bad.

“I’m doing this for him, not for you” Godzilla said motioning towards Rodan. “I would’ve eaten this already”.

“How flattering” Ichi said mockingly, which only made Godzilla react with a groan.

“Pass it here” Rodan said and Godzilla handed the cake to Rodan. He added a tree stick and lit it on fire with his breath. He put the cake in front of Ghidorah and spoke again “So, before we eat, we gotta do what we always do, sing the hatchday song!” Rodan said.

Oh no… there’s a song!?

“Three, two, one…” Rodan counted and immediately started singing, the trio just listened to the song intently as Rodan sung it with great enthusiasm. On the opposite end though, the lizard didn’t look like he was trying at all, which made it better, for Ichi at least. San seemed to be enjoying it and Ni looked like he didn’t care, like always.

Rodan flapped with his wings after finishing and spoke to Ghidorah “Make a wish!”

“A what?” Ichi said.

“A wish! Something you want, you three can wish for something different, then blow the fire on top of the stick. Don’t say it or it won’t happen!”

Something they want? The trio looked at each other, they looked at the stick for a few seconds, but eventually decided their wishes, they kept them for themselves. San wished happiness for himself and his brothers, Ni wished to escape everything, Ichi wished for… some peace. The three blew the flaming stick’s fire in unison. Rodan flapped his wings again with joy and Godzilla just had his arms crossed.

“Time to eat!” Rodan said. He went to the cake and started to cut it with his sharp claws, he already made sure to clean them for the occasion. He handed one piece to Ichi, Ni and San, and put it in front of them respectively. He cut a piece for Godzilla and handed it to him and Rodan kept the last piece for himself.

Godzilla had already started to eat it, viciously at that, it seemed like he REALLY liked it.

Rodan sat down on the sand and started eating himself, definitely more peacefully than Godzilla.

The three headed dragon looked at their pieces for a while, not sure if to eat it or not. They smelled it and examined it. This ain’t a trap wasn’t it…? No, it aint, Rodan isn’t like that.

San was the first to make contact with it. He licked it and tasted it. His eyes immediately lit up and started taking bites out of it. It seemed like it was really good.

Ichi was next, he took a bite out of his piece and before he knew it he was eating it all already.

Ni was looking at his brothers eat. Just because it looked like they enjoyed it, he decided to try too, although making sure no one saw him by dragging his piece away. After his first bite, he took another one and ate his piece in just three bites. He… he liked it.

Finally, everyone finished eating and the silence afterwards was broken by Rodan “Ohhh, that was so good!!!”

Ichi hesitantly spoke “It… it was”

“What did you think, Goji?”

“It was… good” Godzilla said

“Oh, c’mon, I saw how you ate, you loved it.”

“Maybe…” Godzilla whispered.

“Well uhh… yeah! That’s a hatchday!” Rodan said after turning to Ghidorah.

Ghidorah stayed silent for a bit.

“Can I go?” Godzilla said to Rodan.

“Okay fiiiine” Rodan said annoyed at him “party is over anyways”.

Godzilla exhaled and turned for the ocean. He made his way into the water until he was not visible anymore.

Rodan sighed and turned to the hydra “I hope you liked it. It was simple, but it’s always fun.” He said with a smile.

They looked up at him, silence stepped in, the only thing that was heard was the warm breeze passing by.

“We… we did, yes” Ichi said to him. His brothers looked like they agreed with him. “Thank you, Rodan”.

Rodan chuckled “You’re welcome”.

The sun finally set and the night arrived. Rodan had to go, he said his goodbyes to the hydra and took off once again.

Ghidorah returned to their cave.

Today was nice, this hatchday was nice. Even though it isn’t very obvious, Ichi and his brothers were very grateful for it. They laid down and before they knew it, they were asleep once again.
