Not sure how i feel about the emphasis on targ madness in both shows (hotd and akotsk)
there’s basically zero targ madness in dunkyegg. The story very much insists that even Aerion is like that bc of the way he was raised, its the whole argument for removing Egg from that environment. The only other person talking nonsense is Daeron and that was mostly bc he’s drunk, when he has visions they’re not hallucinations they’re real things being shown to him which he’s unable to interpret in a way anyone else would understand. When Daeron is sober he’s miserable but perfectly coherent and self aware
Hotd generally does not make sense as a television programme unless you’re drinking however it seems like they gave Rhaenyra a religious delusions arc bc they wanted to tone down her Fire & blood personality and give her a reason for doing all this besides power. We the audience know all the prophecy on the dagger is bullshit but all the targs up until now were raised to believe they were quite literally demigods who the rules dont apply to and this is a universe where magic and prophecy are both real so you can see where she’d get the idea. It’s astronomically arrogant and foolish but not crazy. As poorly as they’ve handled (or avoided entirely) the subject of the incest at times so far they actually did have a couple of points where they drew a straight line from that to the question of “what the fuck is wrong with this person why do they act like this” ie mr swiss cheese brain himself daemon vs just saying oh well he was just born insane
