Matthew 4:17

This is stated in the verse from the Gospel of Matthew 16;24:

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."

What does the expression "to take one's cross" mean?

The expression "to take one's cross" means to voluntarily accept one's life's difficulties, sufferings, and trials, following the example of Jesus Christ, and to carry them with patience and humility, renouncing one's ego and sinful desires.

He died for our sins on the cross and was resurrected on the third day. Jesus Christ conquered death and through Him we have the opportunity for Eternal Life.

We must love one another as He first loved us.

Jesus Christ is the Light of the world. If we follow Him, we will not be in darkness.

John 8:12

I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Jesus Christ illuminates our lives with His light.

The Lord God said to love everyone, even our enemies:

Luke 6:35

"But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the unthankful and evil."

God calls us to be merciful, even to our enemies, because God is merciful:

Luke 6:36

"Therefore be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
