it was a cruel twist of fate that, out of all of the occasions that kendria has requested off from work for, it was this date that her manager had decided that no, we really need you that day. what a joke.
if they could not be there for her birthday in person, they would be there in every other way. by the afternoon, there is no shortage of gifts that have made their way outside of her door.
the first: a text as soon as marsha's clock strokes midnight, a call as soon as it's appropriate.
the second: a bouquet from the local florist, with lavender roses, purple carnations, violet alstroemeria.
the third: a navy blue crewneck, a cute sailboat embroidered on the front in white thread. it smells like them, like melon and sandalwood and sea salt.
the fourth: a small cake from a nearby bakery, coated in white frosting with cherry designs on the outside and real cherries on top.
each gift comes with its own card, and he has not skipped any of them, spreading compliments and messages of affection and promises that he would fly out as soon as he was temporarily released from the clutches of employment... each one signed love, kennie.
ㅤ marsha had a sinking suspicion that someone wouldn't be able to see her. dozens of party invitations sent⸻ dozens of eager reservations, a few sorry no's, & kennie... well, they'd try. skyla & her mother were both coming, a tender spot in her chest aches for a chance to spend time with her favorite people, all in one place. of course perfection escapes her on the one day she needs it.
ㅤ next year, she tells herself. then she smiles, next year...
ㅤ 1. the text comes at no surprise. she wakes up expecting it⸻ she calls right away to thank him, raspy & dreamy. a grin from ear to ear as croak sniffs for kennie through the speaker, nose pressing buttons that threaten to end it in his excitement. his tail wags into her neck.
ㅤ 2. she catches the florist at the door as she's about to treat herself to brunch⸻ marsha accepts the bouquet into her arms, marvels how it fills her line of sight⸻ it's huge. she pivots back into her kitchen to find a vase big enough. she splits the bouquet in two, shaves their stems, places them in two vases near her window.
ㅤ 3. she finds the sweatshirt & cake on her way back from brunch with her friends, kalosian & unovan alike. while they ache over the stairs up, marsha squeals over another package⸻ box decorated with designs from hands she knows all too well. she ushers them inside to show off gifts from her elusive beau, tucking them beneath her bed for later.
ㅤ 4. marsha takes out a few paper plates, cuts a small cake into slivers for friends. they hum over the flavor, take ample pictures of the decoration ( before she slices ), & chat around the table long after their plates find a spot to rest, holding crumbs & smears of frosting alone. they take their time to chat before they go back to their homes, apartments, & hotels to get ready for the evening.
ㅤ ( *✉️ ) kennie receives an email in the evening ( their time ) of marsha, holding the cake they bought, puckering for the camera:
thank you, baby!!! wish you were here, i'll be seeing you soon? i can feel your love all the way over here!! dream of me tonight xx
