sometimes mental illness does make you act like a piece of shit. when my ocd was undiagnosed a couple years back I was absolutely insufferable because I could not control my confession/reassurance and rumination compulsions at all and I fucking hated myself so everything had to be morally pure or I would spiral and I made myself believe and said some things that made my personality not the best. sometimes healing means knowing that you are not perfect. sometimes mental health issues make people act awful and that does not give you the right to demonize and dehumanize them or the disorder. yes even that disorder. and sometimes you have to forgive yourself for the bad things you believed. you are not perfect and that is a good thing.

the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

Since Henry and Bunny have the same glasses frames, do you think Henry would take them off sometimes and remember how Bunny’s looked cracked with blood on them and hanging off of one of his ears? Do you think he puts them on in the morning and remembers how Bunny had once come bursting back into their dorm first year because he’d mistakenly taken Henry’s glasses, not his own, and only realized when he finally slipped them on during the walk away from their dorm? Do you think he remembers getting into an awful fight with Bunny and taking them off for a time because he couldn’t stand having anything reminding him of that leech near him? Do you think he’d take them off when his head would start to ache and remember the few times he’d fallen asleep with them on and woken up with them removed from his face and set down on his bedside table?
