many women are excited to get old and weird, but i have great news that it's fully possible to become weird now, before you get old. just imagine the heights of weirdness you will be able to reach in fifty years if you get started now. that's what I think
I spent the afternoon arranging our books by size and color (and itās so satisfying and looks amazing) and my partner came home and stared in shock at the bookcase and then said āiām a librarian, you canāt do this.ā
him: you split up all the song of ice and fire books
me: yeah i know, theyāre all primary colors, itās perfect
him: [self-destructs]
Youāre a monster
As a former bookstore employee, this hurts my soul. I mean, sure it looks nice, but how do you find anything?
it has occurred me during this process that apparently not everyone thinks about books by what color they are? like, literally when iām looking for a book, i picture it in my mind. i have a veryā¦tactile experience with the books i read and idk! i thought everyone did that lol.
my partner was likeĀ āhow will i find [this book] for instanceā and i repliedĀ āeasy, itās purpleā and he looked at me like i was a witch.
OP your brain is neat and I love you for it you funky little color-coded cupcake. But youāre still a monster.
This actually is interesting in terms of information-seeking behavior, which is a thing librarians think about a lot and often actually study (some library jobs require you to publish, and academic librarians, for instance, will often use the students at the college they work at to study how they search for information in order to figure out how to best provide them services).
When you go for an MLS (Masterās of Library Science, which is a thing, and which is usually required for āprofessional-levelā library work [which is also a weird and contentious concept that I wonāt go into here]), one of the things you study is the organization of information. This deals with how to determine what a book or other material is āabout"āa concept we tongue-in-cheek call āaboutness"āand how to convey that to a potential user of the item and make it easy for them to find. Things like keywords and subject headings, do I put this book about how often wild birds attack aerial drones in with books about birds or with books about technology, if its a fictional novel do I put fantasy in itās own section or mix it in with all of the other fiction, so on and so on.
OP is organizing books by how they would look for them. OPās partner is thinking in terms of aboutness. This is a system that works for OP because itās their personal library: they know basically what books they own and they only own books that are relevant to them, and if they know what the book looks like, that can be a quick way to find it.
In a library that assumes the public (or people who do not own that particular collection of books) are using the collection, that doesnāt work. Books are often re-issued in multiple covers, or re-bound in new covers when they get worn out, and if the user doesnāt know what the book looks like or is expecting a different cover, theyāre lost. Thatās why non-personal libraries used standardized cataloging systems like the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress System to organize a book by what itās āaboutā, and then put books about the same or similar topics together, marked with labels and signage so a person unfamiliar with the book or collection can find their way to it.
Basically, OPās system works for their own personal library, because itās best suited to how the primary userāOP themselvesālooks for books. OPās librarian partner is coming from a background of thinking in terms of a public-facing collection, where aboutness is the key criteria and communicating it to a user unfamiliar with the collection is the priority.
And also, OP is a monster.

i think about what color my personal books are but for this reason i wouldnāt organize them that way, because color of spine is something instantly observable.
so if theyāre organized by subject and i know the one i want is purple i can go to the History section and see three purple spines and itās the one with the big white font, there, got it.
if you put all the purple ones together the fact that the one you want is purple becomes much less helpful.

Guillermo Del Toro is the only director who would shoot Gepetto making Pinocchio as if it were Dr. Frankenstein creating the monster.
And then shoot Dr. Frankenstein creating the monster as if it were Gepetto making Pinocchio.
Even more devastating, the scene where pinocchio was made was very violent in looks and almost angry but gepetto grew to love his creation like a son but the scene of making the creature was loving and attentive but victor grew to hate his creation .
refound my Spamton Sweepstakes Cube about ~3 years after the house fire (it's perfectly fine), it was just stored in some box.
On this journey, when I described what I was looking for, my mom immediately connected it to the "very interesting box" she had seen but had no clue who's it was. My dad also recognized from description my mom provided.
Upon finding it, and me explaining it was a raffle prize for a very popular game, my dad began talking about it like a 'high value asset'. and considering how much it could sell for in the future or some shit. Over the fucking Spamton Cube. The Spamton Cube . This Thing.
when i was a kid my parents bought me an inflatable doll of the Scream by Edvard Munch (??) that was significantly taller than i was at the time and i used to slow-dance with it and pretend it was my boyfriend. It had its hands attached to its head obviously so it felt like he was always a bit horrified to be forced to dance with me

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
You gotta read and watch some old books and films that arenāt 100% modern politically correct. Iām not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.
Also, more often than you might think, theyāre not actually promoting bigotry so much as ādidnāt consider all the implications of somethingā or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.
Kill the censor in your head.
When we choose to avoid history because it's Problematic or Says Bad Things, we are choosing to divorce ourselves from understanding how we came from that time to this one, which makes it even more likely for the cycle to repeat, with no one but a few people with shelves of old books aware that it's happened before.
and this shit's important. Media from the past tells us how people from the past acted and thought and behaved.
Plus, a lot of these media pieces were socially acceptable and/or progressive for their time. For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, while it contains a lot of words and ideas that are offensive now, was very progressive for its time. The book is a statement piece for how a young man who's grown up in a racist environment, with no words to explain himself other than racist and bigoted ones, decides that the whole system is shit and he's not going to follow those rules any more. So not reading or engaging with it because it uses the n-word a lot really misses the point.

This is a spot from an italian estate agency (we are governed by the right-wing party)
The woman says "Ridiculous..."
If you want to spread it elsewhere, here's the official link
[Video Description: An ad with piano music over it all, showing an elderly woman in her home, knitting, when two younger men walk by her window, which catches her attention. She stares out her window at them as they kiss each other while walking, the old lady staring in disbelief. Cut to the old woman approaching a residence with a broom in hand, staring up at the second floor window where a small rainbow Pride flag is hanging. The old woman stares up at it and mutters "Ridiculo", before getting up on a ladder with her broom to remove the flag. Focus on the flag fluttering to the ground as church bells chime. The scene then cuts to the couple from before, approaching their home with grocery bags in hand before one stops and stares at the second floor, stopping his partner who then drops the groceries as he too stares up. It's then revealed that the small pride flag had been replaced with a gigantic, hand-knit pride flag. It then cuts back to the old woman's home, where a tin of rainbow-colored yarn sits on her table. The hands of the old woman are holding and fondly touching an old black and white photo of two young smiling women, leaning against each other. Cut to the old woman's face as she stares out with a look of happy pride on her face. At the end of the video, the name "Idealista" appears on screen, followed by "buon pride" along with a rainbow. End VD.]
One correction:
The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinionsā¢ļø".
In this case, thankfully, the Strong Opinionā¢ļø is that those two men are ridiculous with their teeny tiny flag for ants.
things Iāve noticed in the UK:
- when youāre jay walking, cars will actively accelerate bc the drivers want to kill you for breaking the rules
- servers in restaurants act very scared and apologetic, so maybe people arenāt nice to them here??? or I could be terrifying
- itās really cute when little kids have British accents, but Iām unmoved by adults with accents
- extremely good gluten free options. this country is like 20 years ahead of Canada in that regard
- people will give random insignificant buildings names with little plaques. and then thatās the name that shows up on the map. like even a smaller than average family home, you can name it like itās a dog
- lots of brick and stone buildings. looks cute and charming until you enter one and thereās no air conditioning
- people are still wearing jaguar print. I like this. donāt let it die
ohhh okay! amendment: cars will actively try to kill you for being small and made of flesh, instead of cool and metal like them
