All she’s ever wanted was happiness, her life back, her parents back. Ella grew up extremely close with her father, him being her very best friend. Not that she didn’t love her mother but she never got to know her before she passed, mostly through stories her dad tells. Even though she doesn’t remember much about her mother she knows how special she was. Her father said he’d never love anyone like that again and then he met Lady Tremaine herself. Ella wasn’t sure what he saw in her but remained kind. Perhaps her greatest weakness was her own kindness, seeing the best in people even when they might not have earned it. When her father died she lost the closest person to her and became the indentured servant of the Tremaine’s. She tried to find the good in it all while always maintaining her sweet demeanor. Inside she longed for a life away from here, a family she could call her own. The ball changed everything. He, changed everything. Of course she thought there was a spark but once the clock struck midnight she knew she had to go before her stepfamily returned. As she ran her glove slipped off in his hand, that being the only thing that convinced everyone she was even there at all. Something about him left her breathless and tethered to the idea of a world beyond her family home. That’s when she decided to leave, sneaking out that night with a small bag of her only belongings and her father’s first edition copy of Walden. Once she left she was able to find a job quite quickly as a maid, not minding doing the dirty work and that’s when she discovered just who she’d met that night. It was Kit Charming himself. She had intentions of finding the man she met but now doesn’t want to lose her only chance at a life outside of the Tremaine’s home. Even though he turned out to be far more handsome, rich, and important than Ella she cares deeply for him, seeing him as more than just his status. He’d helped her see the world in another way and made her realize how terribly she wanted to live again. That’s when she took the job in the first place and the discovery of who it was she’d be working for made her gut twist. Ella wonders if he’ll ever know if it’s her or if he ever felt for a moment that he had seen those eyes somewhere before.
Ella still has the books her father bought her from his adventures when she was growing up. It was what he’d bring her from each trip, saying it was what she could read during his next one as to not miss him so much. They are some of her most prized possessions. Thus being the reason she made sure to grab his first edition before she left, it had been his gift to her but Lady Tremaine took it once she found it, threatening to sell it for money if she didn’t behave.
He is who gave her a love of reading and she treasured all of them. Re-reading them no matter how many times she’d already gone through them. It’s how she still feels connected to her father.
In her head she’s thought about reaching out to them, though she knows it would be pointless. They’d find some way to bring her back, accusing her of theft from the book she stole. She knows she should but as awful as they are to her they are still the closest thing she has left to family.
She used to fall asleep in front of the fire to stay warm while reading and would wake up with ash on her. This got her the nickname ‘Cinderella’ from her stepsisters.
A part of her wants to tell Kit that it was her at the ball but the other knows it might jeopardize her newfound freedom. Plus, she wants him to like her for who she is and Ella knows she isn’t who he thinks the girl from the ball is, for she is only a scullery maid.
Even at the Tremaine’s her favorite place to be is with the animals. Ella knows it’s strange but she feels more at home with them. Even the rats that scare her step sisters she considers her friends. In fact, she’s given them all little names and know each of them when they came to visit her for leftover bread. There was a time where they were the only one’s she had to talk to.
Ella has always dreamed of opening her own bakery where each pastry is made my hand and she can have a real place to call her own. She is saving up all she can in the hopes of one day starting her business. Not to mention she takes in everything she can from the chefs in the kitchen and Kit on the business side of things, so she’s ready when the day comes.
She can also sew. Having to learn at a young age to repair the Tremaine’s clothes and making them one of a kind garments. She’s gotten quite good over the years. In fact, the silver glove that was left behind at the ball was sewn by her own hands.
The closest thing she ever had to a mother was Lady Tremaine. All she ever wanted was her love, to feel like she finally had a mother of her own. She wonders if she for even a mere moment loved her.
