just like raban, who both represents carol's repression AND the life she shared with helen, there is a duel nature in what zosia means to carol. she is simultaneously: helen AND helen's killer, submissive AND imposing, annoying AND "so goddamn fuckable".
zosia was practically designed by a mass of intelligence to be the Perfect Partner for carol. she realized that the moment they met, and yet its still WORKING on her! she can't help but be attracted, and yet there's no true love there - zosia is not an individual, but an avatar. any LOVE carol may feel for zosia is as two-dimensional as love for a fictional character (what many women may have felt for raban) she can unwillingly fall in love with zosia's body, with what zosia can do for her, but never with a person. zosia certainly loves carol, but only with a general, widespread Love for Humanity...not a specific, personalized connection.
truly, zosia is carol's dog! there can be no emotional, intelligent intimacy between the two, because they are not the same creature! carol can use her as an idol to exert her grief, but they are not equals.
