carol having sex with zosia is weird even if zosia did initiate it because zosia as the hivemind is like. everyone. and also commandeering a body that doesn’t belong to them. amplified by carol ODing the same body she later has sex with. albeit in one case trying to save the world, and in the other under an immense amount of pressure and manipulation, there are lots of consent issues. i have a feeling real zosia won’t be too pleased with all this and will honestly be traumatized in the aftermath.
there is no but or however, just an acknowledgement of the grey area that carol sturka lives in. because i don’t think carol is necessarily thinking about it too hard, or she is actively trying not to. she can acknowledge that mr diabaté is fucked up for what he’s doing but because of her lack in an active role within her exchange with zosia, can’t apply that own logic to herself. especially because she can’t help but individualize hivemind-zosia, see her as a single entity that loves her, as the last bit of helen left on this earth. she acknowledges the real zosia as an existing entity, but refuses to even think of the concept of zosia being straight— and the hivemind appeases her by following her lead in using gender neutral pronouns.
here is the unfortunate reality: it is very likely that zosia is straight because otherwise the hivemind would have just used she/her pronouns. it is also hard to see carol as a violater because of how intensely the hivemind manipulated her into seeing zosia as, essentially, helen. but zosia, the body of zosia, the human being of zosia, has the least amount of agency in this situation. has no agency whatsoever. and i am so excited to see how this show addresses that
Speaking for myself, the part of the Pluribus finale that made me absolutely foam at the mouth was Manousos trying to reverse the joining. Before he did it, he warned the hive. He asked the hive what the name was of the person he was trying to un-plurb. He sat by him and put his face near Rick's face and told Rick, tenderly, to please come back.
This hit me like a ton of bricks for a few reasons. One, we've seen Manousos's conviction in spades, but we've never seen him show care for another person. That moment showed that Manousos doesn't just abstractly care about saving the world. He sees the person in front of him, Rick, and wants to save him. It also hit me hard because the rest of the episode made it clear that Carol had, at least temporarily, lost this ability to look at the hive and see the real Zosia who had been stolen away from her life just like Bri the waitress was stolen from her life.
Manousos is not a mere zealot. He cares about other people and he wants something better for them than this.
