Hypnos's Expert Advice
you know a joke that never EVER gets old is when a character says smth like âI will NOT go to [place] and that is FINALâ and then it cuts to them in that place I eat that shit up every single time
Equally good variant: when the character says smth like âwhatâs the worse that could happen?â and it cuts to a scene where itâs so much worse than what they imagined
rb this and tell me why tumblr would deem you bad lgbt rep
life hack from art school: instead of saying you cant draw something or that you dont like something about your art, just say the element âwasnât workingâ
had to change a pose because it was too difficult to draw? it âdidnât workâ compositionally!
feel like something is off about the background? it doesnât suck, itâs just not working for the piece!
art is all about finding ways to convey an idea or emotion in a VERY subjective way, so thinking about it in terms of âworking/not working for this pieceâ instead of âgood/badâ is very helpful for me personally. itâs a small step you can take towards having a healthy outlook on your work!
Whenever I draw something and I donât like how it comes out, instead of telling myself that itâs bad because âIâm a bad artistâ, I tell myself that itâs simply boring in terms of colours or composition and thatâs why I donât like it. This made me a lot less self-conscious.
thatâs a very good point!! being able to identify WHAT exactly in the piece bothers you can cut down on a lot of that self loathing
i dont see a lot of people talking about how to healthily self-critique, which is a really important thing for artists to learn (considering weâre all so incredibly critical of our own work)
ask yourself first what IS working. what elements do you want to keep? do you need to keep working on this piece thatâs frustrating you, or can you incorporate that part you really like into a different setting?
then move on to what ISNâT working. find references for things youâre not sure how to draw! learn how to let go of the things that just wonât work no matter how many times you try them. sometimes an idea for a drawing is really cool, but the execution wonât match what youâre imagining. (not even sometimes, but a LOT of times.)
check all of the principles of design in your pieceâ this infographic is really helpful. go down the list and ask yourself which principles are present in your piece, and if closer attention to any of them could make your piece start working.
finally, STEP AWAY from your work for a long time! come back to it the next day!! the longer i give myself to take a break from it, the better i can look at it objectively.
September 21, 2020 - Ron Cobb, best known for being the production designer for several major films, has died at 83 years of age. Cobb brought to life several cantina creatures for Star Wars (1977) and came up with weaponry and sets for Conan the Barbarian (1982), the exterior and interior of the Nostromo ship in Alien (1978) and the earth colony complex in Aliens (1986), and the DeLorean time machine in Back to the Future (1985).
More interestingly, to me at least, is that in the 1960s and 70s he was a great radical political cartoonist, and sadly, many cartoons of those days are still just as relevant today. A small selection:
Rest in Peace, Ron Cobb. Find more of his cartoons here: http://roncobb.net/cartoons.html

â5 Ways White Women Center Themselves in Conversations About Race
1. Crying
I donât care whether youâre crying because you feel attacked or crying because you feel guilty â either way, you need to stop. When you cry the natural focus shifts to you because many folks donât feel comfortable continuing a conversation with someone who is so visibly distraught. Youâve created two scenarios: either I have to console you, or I have to put away the conversation. Neither is fair and both are to appease you â the white person who is not harmed and is actually *benefitted* by racism.
2. Redirecting to Your TraumaÂ
Trauma and mental illness are both very real and should be taken seriously. That said, conversations about racism are not the time and place to focus on the struggles youâve been through in your life, nor are they sufficient excuses for not engaging in the intentional work of anti-racism.
I always find these redirects ironic because *racism* is traumatic. Constantly dealing with *white fragility* is traumatic. By re-centering the conversation to be about you and your trauma you are contributing to the racial trauma of the person youâre speaking to.
3. Bringing Up Times When You Were A âGood AllyâÂ
Please stop. You think we canât tell, but I promise you âwe can. I donât want to hear about that one time when you stood up for a Black person I donât want to hear about how inspiring the book you read last month was, and I certainly donât want to hear about that one friend you have who you noticed did something racist once. Iâm sorry you just not going to be getting a biscuit for *any* of that. Save yourself some energy, girl! Quit the show. Weâll know if youâre a good -ally if you show us with your actions. When you recenter yourself in this way it forces us to reassure you that you are in fact a âgood personâ and ânot a racistâ. Exhausting.
4. Credentialing
This is something that Robin Diangelo discusses in her book White Fragility shaped by her learnings from Black folks. Stop talking about all the qualifications you have in this area. Having Black friends, living in a Black neighborhood, getting a degree in ethnic studies, working in social justice, writing a book. I donât care how âofficialâ the credential sounds. If you are white there are not enough credentials in the world to immunize you from racism.
This really builds off the last point because you are again centering yourself in a way that expects the person you re speaking to to validate your âcredentialâ as sufficient credit to excuse you of your racism. Yet again, the conversation has become about you.
5. Apologizing For White People And Expressing Your Guilt
Unless you are being called out for a specific harm *you caused* Iâm not sure why youâre apologizing. I certainly donât understand why you re apologizing for people other than yourself!! You canât do that. Often when Iâm talking to white people about race Iâm looking for active listening, for empathy, compassion and solidarity. Not apologies and not guilt. I canât do anything with your guilt. When you recenter the conversation this way the person youâre speaking with is forced to âaccept your apologyâ or attempt to ease your guilt.
A Final Note
While this list was created from my, and other Black folks, experiences with white women, I think some of these items are also relevant to any of us in dialogue about oppressive systems that we benefit from: whether it be transphobia, colorism, xenophobia, or any other form of oppression, those of us who benefit from an oppressive system need to be aware of the way we show up in conversation with those of us who are harmed.â
END ID]
All of you in the notes who are more focused on the first point, instead of like...reading and comprehending the entire message of the post is the exact kind of derailing the OP is talking about. Someone ALREADY offered ways to avoid making your white tears the center of attention in situations regarding racism. Also, yâall keep forgetting that black people can also be neurodivergent/mentally ill and may not have the same freedom to express their emotions like you.
Like...all of yâall complaining about the first point completely missed the entire reason it was there and still chose to derail the overall message in favor of asking OP how you should go about handling your tears. White neurodivergent/mentally ill people really need to take a step back and stop using their ailments as âshieldsâ for their racism (purposeful or not).
