EXACTLY. I used to own 5 horses and horses are suppose to look strong and healthy up to their death pretty much. Theres this guy near here who has horses and they look like theyre dying and everyone reports him but animal control is always like “theyre just old.” Truely disgusting.

It’s all about nutrition and exercise (if the latter is possible). If your horse at 20-something starts losing its top line, there’s tons you can do: feed more hay (in fact, feed hay with a good alfalfa content, because that has more protein than hay made of only grass mixes), feed a senior / muscle supplement (I have had great results with Purina Ampliy), and if they’re able to, you can exercise them to build and maintain muscle. Horses should be healthy. Old age isn’t an excuse to neglect caring for them.

Granted, sometimes they’ll look a little more thin with age. I know a horse who is 34 and he’s looking a bit on the thin side. However, there’s a difference between looking a little bit thin and starving. One of my horses is 23, and she’s looking great. Yes, keeping her in shape takes a little more work than the others. She’s on Purina Amplify, which works really well for her, and we do lunging exercises in summer to maintain muscle as well. It’s natural in the aging process to look a bit more thin. But that’s when we should do what we can to either prevent or slow down that process.

I think what it really comes down to is the fact that caring for senior horses, which is totally possible, takes more time, effort, money, and extended knowledge, which some people unfortunately aren’t willing to put in the effort to use. Take care of your horses, y’all. If you’re going to have them, make sure you have the knowledge and resources to care for them properly when they’re older, too.

I forget how much I paid for mine (probably around $100?), but I have the Wahl Arco SE and it is great! Comes with two rechargeable batteries that last a long time. It's made pretty well, too. I've had mine for maybe 3-4 years, and I haven't had any issues with it at all other than regular maintenance, such as having to buy new blades.

My parents signed me up for Nextdoor, which is like some kind of community-based mini facebook, and I am signed up in their neighborhood, which is (as we have established) The Boondocks.

I don’t mind belonging to their Nextdoor, it means that I will be kept abreast of local news, but also the local news is hilarious.

The latest messages concern a HEATED DISCUSSION about hoof trimming because someone posted asking if anyone knows a farrier who will trim miniature horse hooves, which apparently most farriers have some kind of BASELESS PREJUDICE against according to this poster. Battle lines are quickly being drawn between the various camps including:

Miniature horses don’t need hoof maintenance the way regular horses do

Miniature horses ABSOLUTELY need hoof maintenance you monsters

Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves ain’t shit

Farriers who won’t do miniature horse hooves have their reasons

Miniature horses are some bullshit

Just gonna throw it out there: minis do need regular hoof maintenance, and all 3 of my farriers have no problem trimming. They will shoe minis if you ask them to, but they don't particularly like it just because the hooves are so small that it's hard to maneuver nailing the actual shoe on. :)

Photos for reference — I was SO scared this was going to be something bad. Just noticed a few days ago this huge swelling on Kutie’s belly that was about the size of my palm. Rang the vet, and she was pretty certain without actually coming out that it was an allergic reaction to a bug bite of some sort. Our friend (a vet tech) also said the same thing. The swelling these past few days has gone down significantly, so I’m less concerned now. The point is, protecting from bugs is so important! I use equispot every two weeks, Pyranha fly spray nearly every day the flies are bad, as well as fly masks (though I still need to find some that fit the minis well). Keep your horses safe!
