'Voldemort' Q&A with Author Grace Candido-Beecher: Part 1

What portion of Tom Riddle/Voldemort's life is most interesting to you?Β
ALL OF IT.Β
It would be impossible to pick just one phase of Tomβs story to be focused on. Iβm compelled by the mystery of Tom. His history, his genealogy, his mentality, his relationships, his actions, Iβm obsessed with all of it.
Do you see Tom Riddle as purely evil?
No, heβs human. I think itβs pretty plain to see his obvious shortcomings.Β
Tom as a character is made up of both positive aspects and negative ones. Heβs incredibly intelligent, resilient, resourceful, and ambitious (yes, Iβll stand by this as a POSITIVE trait). Yet, heβs born into the world so achingly alone, unable to connect with the people around him due to no fault of his own. Heβs born into horrible neglect, abuse, and war, without anyone to guide him through this unforgiving life.Β
Does this mean that all is forgiven and forgotten because he had a rough childhood and doesnβt have a basic understanding of empathy? UH NO, thatβs a jump buddy, calm down. But in that same breath, this lived reality means that we canβt completely disregard his past. He sees the world in a cold, unforgiving way because he has never known a world that was anything but cold and unforgiving. In the ethereal Kingβs Cross platform, Dumbledore points out that Tom could never appreciate fairy tales, and while this is a fair assessment, itβs also reductive. Fairy tales are meant to be comforting experiences (and sometimes warnings) shared between a child and a guardian. To level that sort of accusation at someone who has never had a guardian is, simply put, pretty cruel.Β
If weβre going to fault Tom, it shouldnβt be because of his lack of understanding when it comes to love and empathy, it should be because of his conduct. Theyβre linked in this case, but not always. Plenty of people who have an underdeveloped sense of empathy (namely people who have ASPD, or in laymanβs terms, classify as psychopaths and sociopaths) go on to live fulfilling lives without causing catastrophic damage.Β
In different circumstances, Tom might have found his way to leading a fulfilling life on his own terms. Maybe those terms would have looked different than what Albus or Harry think contentment looks like, but it would have been contentment nonetheless.
My impression is that the core character of Tom isnβt purely evil. He had the makings of an incredible Minister for Magic, or professor, or a headmaster had things shaken out just a bit differently. But there were so many factors around him, violent, vitriolic, and ready to convince him that life is war and only the most powerful survive.Β
And when life is a constant battleground, he only sees a single escape: immortality and domination.

unpopular opinion: i dont think tom riddle would be against the idea of having children at all, its just he doesnt want to deal with the childhood portion of raising children. like he actively abhors the idea of childhood, for others and for himself.
but aside from characters who are/were married in hp, he was the only unmarried character who actively pursued creating his own "family" (well its more recruitment and a cult following but still!)
i actually see his horcruxes as his children, like he put a piece of himself into something else to reflect him and anchor him to life. arent children supposed do that, in a biological sense? carry on the genes of the parent, make them immortal through blood?
but who would be tom riddles prefered baby mama? tcc said he had one in bella but i really cant see it? (cause no bella u deserve more than crumbs bb). i think tom is of the camp that he doesnt shit where he eats you know. like how he made his horcruxes.. they were deeply personal things that were special yes, but more special to him and him alone. hes a sentimental sap after all.
so if a tomlette were to ever be conceived, i would say its with a person that is special only to him and no one else knows about.. or somebody random.. cause most likely it would be an accident. the dark lords control over his urges may have slipped from time to time. he is a hypocrite like that. (like really, from the late 40s to the early 80s, not once??)
tom i think would be highly involved in the pregnancy and birth. remus lupin could never. tmr would be locked in. he has β¨οΈtraumaβ¨οΈ about that but once that baby is popped, he would disappear like the toxic baby daddy he is. (create bonds? bitch please. that type of familial relationship would scare tf out of him.) but he would keep tabs on that child like a curse. like he is always a shadow in that childs life.
what would he do with the child? well, like how he kept his horcruxes, they would be kept at bay and only to be used when necessary.

I don't understand how it would be crumbs though? Bellatrix is the only living being he cared about. She is the closest to family he ever had. Not only is there no better choice than her, there is no other choice. She is the only plausible choice, so it's no wonder the author herself gave them a child.
I know fandom, for some reason, doesn't really discuss their relationship a lot and has huge misconceptions about it and headcanons rooted in fanon and movie misunderstandings, but in the books, they're extremely close and intimate. You can check out the link in my pinned post if you're interested.
