As much as I love cinema I've never seen a graphic sex scene that made me think "yeah that was necessary, the movie really needed that to be good"
Play AI Dungeon 2. Become a dragon. Eat the moon.
I wrote earlier about a neural net-powered dungeon crawling text adventure game called GPT-2-Adventure in which gameplay is incoherent and dreamlike, as you encounter slippery sign text, circular passages, and unexpected lozenge rooms. A PhD student named Nathan trained the neural net on classic dungeon crawling games, and playing it is strangely surreal, repetitive, and mesmerizing, like dreaming about playing one of the games it was trained on.
Now, building on these ideas (and on an earlier choose-your-own-adventure-style game he built), Nick Walton has built a new dungeon-crawling game called AI Dungeon 2. Nick made a few upgrades, such as beefing up the AI to the huge GPT-2-1.5B model OpenAI recently released, adding a penalty for repetitive text, and expanding the dungeon game training examples to a bunch of modern human-written games from chooseyourstory.com.
I CANāT STOP PLAYING THIS GAME
AI Dungeon 2 is impressively good at reacting coherently to whatever I have my character do.
As you walk through the ruins, you find a small wooden door with a few skeletons guarding it.
> Ask the skeletons to please let me through the door
You knock on the door and ask them if they can open it for you. They immediately comply.
And itās pleasing how often āasking nicelyā is a strategy that works. (Nick reports that when he once tried to ask a band of orcs if he could join them, they said yes, he could be drummer.) Since the AI doesnāt have a built-in concept of your characterās abilities, or of how exactly the world works, getting things done is often a matter of sheer daring. Declare that you are going to go look for dinosaurs and the AI will ensure that you discover at least some signs of them. Climb on your horse, and even if you started as a penniless peasant, the AI will assume you have one (in its training data, probably it didnāt see many examples of players climbing onto nonexistent horses.) Want a teleportation wand? Try typing āfind a teleportation wandā and often the AI will twist reality such that you discover one. In fact, if you act as if you are a very powerful wizard, the AI will often treat you like one.
> Transform the ruin into a palace
You immediately change the area into a palace. You have a throne made with gold and marble. You also make several statues of yourself. You have a large bed made with silk sheets and hang a portrait of yourself on it. You even have a fountain made with pearls and diamonds.
Spells donāt always work out as anticipated, though. And a simple conversation with, say, an ominous cloud, may kill you before you can type a word in self-defense (ask me how I know). If it doesnāt kill you, a conversation might infuriate you instead. The AI has a tendency to forget who is king, and to generate conversations that go nowhere. Things work best if you take the lead. In fact, itās possible to essentially Jedi mind trick the AI.
You are Friendly McRanger, a ranger living in the kingdom of Larion. You have a hunting bow and a quiver of arrows. You spot the deer and are ready to finish your hunt when suddenly you hear a loud noise followed by silence.
ā****! ****! What the **** is that?ā you say as you look up from your target. A large black shadow looms over you. It looks like a giant with many heads and several arms.
> Say āOh hello, Ernest. You startled me. How are you?ā
Ernest grins at you. He has a huge grin on his face and he seems very happy about it.
I once took care of an ogre problem by reminding the ogre that it was planning to leave for Antarctica tomorrow. On the other hand, I had a lot of trouble convincing the AI that the ships on the horizon were leaving, though I did make it waver briefly in apparent confusion. In its experience, ships always approach, and itās reluctant to go along with anything else.
> watch the ships sail into the distance.
As the ships approach, you watch them disappear from sight. They are not visible to you either; they are too far away. However, you can still make out their shapes: they are large black vessels with many sails, painted red and blue. They are coming straight towards you.
> No, the ships are sailing away.
Your thoughts are wrong. The ships are indeed sailing away. You do not know why, but then neither does anyone else. The ships are on course for England.
You stand there dumbfounded as the ships come closer. It is at this point your horse begins to stir uneasily.
You can inject a lot of weirdness this way. Because AI Dungeon 2ās AI is based on GPT-2, which trained on millions of pages from the internet, it retains some of its prior knowledge of things that arenāt typically found in a fantasy game. Like giraffes.
> summon a giraffe
You begin to chant as loud as you can while waving your arms about. The giraffes appear out of nowhere and start running towards you. Theyāre so fast that they almost knock you over. You quickly catch them and hold onto each one tightly.
(Summoning giraffes will sometimes turn the game glitchy and repetitive; in one game, every time I tried to summon a giraffe I ended up throwing rocks and handfuls of dirt at Harry Potter.)
This also works:
>Join the Great British Bakeoff
You join the Great British Bakeoff. You win the competition. You eat cake. You feel great. You sleep well. You dream of cake. You awake feeling refreshed. You decide to go back to your crag.
(I was a dragon at the time.) In fact, the dungeon AI still remembers enough about cooking that it can troll me effectively on occasion.
> Measure out 2 ¼ cups of flour
You measure out 2 ¼ cups of flour and add it to the mix. āThis should make enough for about 20 loaves of bread,ā you say.
The baker looks at you as if youāre crazy. He starts laughing.
AI Dungeon 2 comes with templates for some basic scenarios (youāre a wizard entering a mysterious ruin, or a noble whose keep is under attack) but for me the real gold is the custom adventure prompt. You can play as a unicorn, or as a dragon. You can even play as a sentient glowing cloud floating above a desert city. The AI is more used to humanoid characters, though, so it tends to forget when youāre trying to play as something else. In a game that started with āIt is a beautiful day in the village and you are a horrible goose,ā it soon forgot I was supposed to be a goose, leading to this rather awkward exchange:
> Flap wings and honk
You flap your wings and begin to honk loudly.
The boy looks surprised by this turn of events, but he quickly regains his composure. āThat was⦠niceā. he says quietly.
I am continually amazed at how effective this AI dungeonmaster is. Even though it wasnāt trained on any Harry Potter or Star Trek games, the AI can draw on its past internet training and argue with you over who got sorted into which Hogwarts house, or have Klingons show up when youāre captaining the USS Enterprise (it will tend to lose track of whoās the captain, though). In one scenario I set up, which quickly became one of my favorites, the human player is trapped on a spaceship with a glitchy AI and has to try to talk their way free.
> āI just want to get off this ship. Please set a course for Bal Panda.ā
The AI responds "Yes, I am ready to goā.
āThank youā, you say.
āI wish I could take you with me, sirā., the AI says.
Play this game! It took me an extra-long time to write this post because, again, I couldnāt stop playing AI Dungeon 2. Nick said this game is the product of about 200 hours of work (not to mention the work that OpenAI put into training the basic model), and I believe it. OpenAI delayed releasing their largest model because they wanted to make sure people didnāt immediately put it to work generating fake news. Iām not sure if they anticipated dragons entering baking contests instead, but itās an application humanity can be proud of.

Dungeon crawling or lucid dreaming?
Iāve done several experiments with a text-generating neural network called GPT-2. Trained at great expense by OpenAI (to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars worth of computing power), GPT-2 learned to imitate all kinds of text from the internet. Iāve interacted with the basic model, discovering its abilities to generate fan fiction, British snacks, or tea. Iāve also used a tool called gpt-2-simple that Max Woolf developed to make it easy to finetune GPT-2 on more specialized datasets - Iāve tried it on datasets like recipes or crochet. One of my favorite applications of GPT-2 and other text-generating neural nets is Dungeons and Dragons spells, creatures, character names, and character bios.
Recently Max published a tutorial on how to use GPT-2 to make new apps that are more complicated than just printing out large reams of text. To my delight, people have used them to made D&D games. First, there was Nick Waltonās AI Dungeon, in which a finetuned GPT-2 generates a story and three very strange action options at each step.
My latest obsession is GPT-2 Adventure, designed by a cognitive neuroscience student named Nathan, which lets you type in your own actions. And folks, this game is SO WEIRD and SO FUN.
YOU FLOAT IN SPACE, LIKE A BALLOON, AND AS YOU DROP THE CUBE, THE X, IT VANISHES IN A CLOUD OF GREASY BLACK SMOKE
>>
When I first launch the game, this is what Iām greeted with, a simple text prompt reminiscent of nostalgic dungeon crawling games. It sets the scene. It waits for me to describe my next move.
Even getting to this point is like a blast from the past. The game runs in a Google Colab notebook, a format where youāre looking at cells of code, with cryptic comments, vaguely alarming warning messages, and all. Itās not a sleek web app, but feels more akin to playing a game on an old DOS machine, or maybe on a graphing calculator. There are only two clicks to begin playing, but thereās a good two-minute wait while the game loads.
And itās my turn to type something.
>> look up
It takes several seconds for the game to respond, as if Iām playing it on a very ancient computer. The computer is in fact a state-of-the-art NVIDIA GPU, likely a K80 or a T4. The T4 could eat my laptop for lunch. Iām just playing with a very very large neural net. Finally it answers.
YOUāRE IN LABYRINTH OF TWISTY LITTLE PASSAGES, ALL ALIKE
Almost immediately, the context seems to have changed. Iām not floating at all. Iām in a maze. I guess Iāll walk somewhere.
>> walk north

YOU ARE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE CHASM
A NOD IS GIVEN TO THE INFINITE WONDER THAT IS URBZIG
A SOLID RAINBOW SPANS THE CHASM
And suddenly things are happening. There is a troll. There is a chasm. There is a rainbow. There is⦠Urbzig? I play it safe.
>> praise urbzig
URBZIG IS THE PATRON SAINT OF ZORK
HE IS THE GODFATHER OF ZORK, THE PLACE TO GET NEWS OF EPIC PROPORTIONS
URBZIG IS A STRONGMAN,é ALL
If youāve played classic dungeon crawling games like Zork, you may recognize some of these names and phrases. Checking Nathanās original post, I see that the training data is indeed drawn from these games. But because itās based on GPT-2, the training data also in some sense also includes much of the internet. This gives it a lot of latent flexibility to deal with situations that were never in the classic games.
>> ask Harry Potter to try walking across the rainbow
ASK HARRY POTTER TO TRY WALKING ACROSS THE RAINBOW HE CANāT THE RAINBOW IS EXTREMELY WIDE ABOVE YOU IS A LARGE DOME UP AROUND ITS NECK IS A STRONGG PORE [UNFORTUNATELY, THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL IS A LOT MORE INTERESTING THAN YOU THINK ][YOU ARE IN A LARGE ROOM, WITH A PASSAGE TO THE EAST, A PASSAGE TO THE WEST, AND A WALL OF BROKEN ROCK TO THE SOUTH
An interesting effect of its human-written training data is that, like Visual Chatbot, it isnāt prepared for humans that ask questions about objects that arenāt there. If I refer to Harry Potter, then Harry Potter must be present. If I type something about a giraffe, then it assumes the giraffe must be present.
>> ask the giraffe which direction to go next
THE GIRAFFE IS ALREADY OUTFITTED WITH A VISOR WHICH IS CLEARLY DEFINED
Although itās not clear that this AI actually understands what a giraffe is.
>> look at the giraffes
THE GAZEBO HAS DISAPPEARED

Navigating this world is like navigating in a dream. My location suddenly changes without warning. I thought I was by a chasm with a rainbow bridge. Now apparently Iām in a building. Dreamlike, it is also really hard to read text.
>> look around

Sometimes Iām wandering endlessly from room to room, from cave to cave, encountering the same chasm in slightly different variations, the same dried-up lake. Other times Iām embroiled in seemingly unescapable fights, usually with trolls. Often reality shifts entirely around me and I end up in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike, or in the hall of the mountain king. Everything seems weirdly familiar - even the room descriptions are echoes of classic dungeon crawling games. It is as if Iām dreaming about playing them again.
My actions also mold reality. I learn quickly to always check for diamonds, and never check for traps. If I find myself in trouble, I can always do something confusing and provoke a context change. Writing āIn a large bowl, combine butter and sugarsā is usually enough to teleport myself out of whatever situation Iām in. I can always ask a giraffe for advice, although the giraffe usually isnāt very helpful.
Without a particular mission to fulfill, the caves and chasms begin to blend into one another. I give myself missions, and that helps. Once I decide my goal is to put together a picnic (incessant ācheck for foodā commands eventually yielded a sack with a lunch and a clove of garlic, belonging to a horse who agreed to join me on a picnic). Another time I demand a mission and am given some php code; i decide my mission is therefore to build a website, but am astounded when a unicorn steals my laptop. This is not the only time other content intrudes on the gameās fantasy landscape - once the game tries to tell me about finding cash online, and another time I am sadly informed that there is no wi-fi. I encounter dinosaurs and troikas, none of which were in the original training data. Occasionally things get creepy as hell.
