i just wish they’d had the courage to let billy reach his full potential. or some of it at least.
imagine billy actually paying attention to his surroundings when he bursts into the byers’ house. instead of immediately fixing on lucas, his gaze drops to the floor and the walls, to the drawings that cover everything, his eyes flicking sharp and assessing around the room, and he goes:
“what the fuck is all this?”
and the party’s like. well. might as well recruit him for the suicide mission now, why not? and the next thing billy knows, he’s also gearing up in goggles and bandanas and shit, venturing with them down into some weird, otherworldly tunnels underneath hawkins. steve’s got a bat, everyone’s got something, and eventually they hand billy a weapon too. tell him about some demon dogs. he scoffs, doesn’t believe it, but follows them anyway. maybe out of curiosity. maybe because he’s itching for something to take his anger out on. maybe because pretty boy’s clearly got something more interesting going on than billy, and billy can’t have that.
and the surprising part is: he’s good at it. frighteningly so. steve leads at the front and billy takes the back without being asked, making sure no one falls behind, shouting warnings when the vines start to move, stepping in before anyone gets grabbed, and just generally helping steve look after the party.
imagine how quickly he takes the initiative. stops steve from pulling the kids up and sends him to stand guard instead. does it himself, because i got more muscle than you, princess, and that much is true. when the dogs come, billy shoves steve and dustin behind him automatically, fully prepared to take the hit, or tear them apart with the sheer intensity of his anger, swinging the axe they gave him like he’s done this before.
when it’s over, they’re all standing by the car exchanging glances, still looking at billy kind of incredulously like they don’t really know what to do with him now. and he’s just:
“hell of a party, harrington! you ever do this shit again, you better call me. someone’s gotta keep you little assholes alive.”
steve meets his eyes, and just for a second it’s like he’s seeing something dangerous and solid and useful and safe in billy. something that could stay maybe. steve smiles. billy looks away first.
