has anyone read the lisi harrison monster high books kinda recently because i just finished the first one and wow it’s fascinating as an accompaniment or expansion of the world. Draculaura’s diary crush on jackson is adapted into writing, as well as frankie being the ‘new ghoul in school’ are carried over. Obviously, there are many differences (monsters being hidden and everyone’s alternate names for most of the series. oh and melody’s existence)
It’s a great time capsule of 2010 from the fashion to the music to the reference, it’s very fun.
It’s interesting how in the fandom, g1 deuce is generally considered the best male character and in the books he’s a total cheating loser, and invisibilly’s weird prominence in the story as frankie’s only ally when she tries to raise that the monsters should come out of hiding.
I actually liked melody and frankie crushing on jackson and holt respectively because i think it’s more interesting than frankie just liking both of them.
HOWEVER, MELODY’S RESONANCE WITH MONSTERKIND BEING FROM THE FACT THAT SHE USED TO HAVE A HOOKED NOSE IS CRAZYYYY. (i have a hooked nose for reference).
I did like the earlier segments where she references regretting getting the procedure and saying that in new salem, people would’ve accepted her for how she was. But Melody comparing her having a big nose to Jackson who has essentially just Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and she keeps going “omg he’s a monster!” Like… cmon.
Also her big choice being:
a) follow jackson out of the dance where he is presently begging to leave as he is being triggered
or
b) follow this monster hunt for frankie (that she doesn’t even agree with) because her stupid mean girl friends want her to.
In 2013 (when i got it), this choice of a was obvious.
in 2026, as an adult, THE CHOICE IS DOUBLE OBVIOUS. DUH ITS A. A A A A! why is there any attention put to b! fuck becca and hayley or whatever their names are.
Your boyfriend has just realised that all of his crudeness and brashness is given consciousness and shares his body as a separate identity and is presently having some kind of episode and you let him (after switching) run off on his own, after there was so much emphasis being put on not letting monsters be discovered. And then her friends blackmail and betray her anyway!
It’s also interesting how the phrase ‘hooking up’ originally meant to meet platonically and has slowly shifted to mean ‘having sex’ to the point where DJ (holt) says “im hooking up with both of you” (referring to melody and frankie). Like jackson is dating melody, sure. They’ve made out like once. And DJ has had about 3 flirty conversations with frankie and that’s it.
The only mildy complicated the book seems to raise is the question. “should you compromise your appearance, identity and culture as a minority to appease the majority because by embracing your culture in public, you harm your own community.”
Because, be yourself, be unique, be a monster is the franchise’s core principle. However, for your own safety, you may have to conform. But also by hiding, you eliminate the possibility to ever come out of the shadows and prove that your community is not as dangerous as people claim.
I liked what Viktor (frankie’s dad) says about having a quiet pride. That even though the world despises them, they find a sense of inner beauty and still make their daughter in their own image. Because there’s nothing wrong with them. It’s the world.
Anyway fun book, especially when the last two books you’ve read are wuthering heights and frankenstein. Good change of pace to have everything spelled out for you and very obvious and simple.

hello ghouls i’ve been getting really into monster high again and i’ve noticed a how many g3 haters seem to be people who aren’t currently into monster high/don’t know what they’re talking about.
G1 and G3 are two different series who (if you watched them and earnestly engaged with the ideas they’re trying to present) aim to do two different things.
Also hey, i’m only human.
I like g1 more. The fashion appeals to my tastes. I grew up with it. I like the storytelling better. However I think that from an objective view, G3 is expressing Monster High’s moral goal better.
Characters are more diverse, behind and in front of the screen. The characters in their core looks dress closer to how teenagers of today would dress rather than awesome outfits I would wear to university (with more emphasis on flatter shoes or like clawdeen’s overalls etc). Because as much as us the fandom/garret sander confirmed that clawdeen in g1 is a lesbian, MATTEL NEVER CONFIRMED THAT IN THE TEXT. It is no more meaningfully canon than me saying ‘Deuce has to be trans because gorgons are all born female.’
Do not give mattel credit for the diversity that doesn’t exist. When Valentine was supposed to be confirmed as gay they said it ‘wasn’t the right time’. let’s not forget.
While in G3, Frankie is canonically, proudly and overtly queer! Cleo is in a canonically queer couple! Deuce has two mums! Draculaura is mixed race! These are actual-real-totally-fangtastic pieces of representation that children today get to look at!
I’m not shitting on g1 btw. I think it was very ahead of its time in terms of how diverse the cast is. But also, it’s kinda racist.
Jinafire is a stereotypical ‘honour and tranquil’ asian girl who literally has golden skin. As a kid i felt so happy just to see another asian girl on screen but like, it’s 2026. We can’t have oriental music playing every-time she goes on screen.
So anyway I have so much more to say about monster high please talk to me about monster high i have just finished rewatching all the movies and webisodes. I’m partway through the Lisi Harrison books and im almost finished with the diaries. I am crazy about this franchise. I’m so diehard that i don’t even think that all of g1 is good. i think the franchise starts flopping in 2014 (with exceptions ofc) But i think all the best content/the content that i wish we had more of is all before the ‘we are monster high’ era.
Okay I have more stuff to say about monster high and think i can say it more concisely for the g3 haters out there.
I think that g1 has more interesting stories and more engaging characters because many of the stories are modeling anti-social behaviour and it’s consequences to try and encourage pro-social behaviour. Etc a character does something bad and learns their lesson by the end. This is a tried and true method for storytelling. It’s engaging. It allows for the main characters to be flawed and relatable because they make mistakes. I like this style of storytelling more.
what really gets me is that by watching g3’s animated show (which i’m only like halfway through s1 so keep that in mind) is that the show’s format is characterised by the characters modeling pro-social behaviour for children to mimic. Characters are all friendly, kind, honest and accepting. If someone does make a mistake it’s never out of malice or an intention to do harm and everyone makes up at the end. The only exception being torelai who gets to maintain some of her flaws.
This is why i think the shows are fundamentally incomparable because it’s obvious that they are trying to do different things! why criticise a bicycle for not being able to travel across the sea as well as a boat could? they are two separate entities, written with different intentions!
It's achually crazy how Clawdeen's casual outfits in G3 are kinda not good at all but then you see her formal or party looks like Monster Ball, Monster Fest and Hauntlywood and suddenly she's the most fashionable ever.
i think this is maybe the most realistic part of g3 as a fellow ghoul who dresses up for every outing but once i’m at home or like going to a friends house i become instantly plain and low-effort. like why put in effort for SCHOOL when i could be wearing thigh high latex boots at the CLUB
i'm pretty sure g3!clawdeen was meant to be a lesbian according to the nick show's pitch bible but we never got to see anything come of it since it got canceled :( not that anyone who complains about g3!clawdeen's sexuality has ever seen anything g3 but the live action movie, bc g3!deuce is all but outright said to be aromantic in the show

and like yeah sure the fashion of g3 is bad whatever whatever. NONE OF THAT MATTERS TO ME IF IT MEANS MORE PEOPLE OUT THERE ARE REPRESENTED ON SCREEN
in an ideal world? sure, i’d love the darker colour palette for some of the dolls back. But if the trade off means that we lose meaningful representation, it’s not worth it!!
Esp as someone on the ace spectrum myself, it means so much to me as an adult to see Ace characters who exist and are full people on screen! esp when so much ace rep boils down to ‘we never see them in a relationship’

here’s a wip i can’t bring myself to finish because watched wuthering heights 2026 (its bad) and decided to read the book and came to horrible conclusions and now we’re here.
movie heathcliff has no teeth! I like that he’s the worst in the book! similarly, I like that equius is kind of the worst! his unlikeable traits are quite likeable to me! heathcliff’s stoic, cold demeanour and brutality are very equius to me.
and nepeta shares the passion and cheekiness that cathy has in the novel. also there is a section where cathy is saying how she loathes heathcliff and his company which reminded me of nepeta saying that nobody can stand equius (all while hanging out with him, mind you)
anyway i have a lot of things to say about how this new adaptation is so so so bad but i don’t have anything new to contribute (whitewashing heathcliff, skipping the 2nd gen, kinda combining cathy with cathyjr and heathcliff with hareton, everything abt isabella heathcliff, etc etc) besides my meowrails propaganda so i’ll share that instead.
