Iâve never had a very structured method of memorization, so learning esoteric medical trivia has always been a challenge for me. Â Today, I was studying on my laptop and ended up drawing the above thingy. Â Iâm not sure if anybody else would be able to make sense out of it, but it was useful in helping me to straighten out some of the eponymous diseases that happen to the adrenals.
Workin' on my cartoons!
âLenk the Wunderlichâ A visual cue card that I made to help me recall facts about the rare eponymous disease known as Wunderlich Syndrome. Classically, a patient may present with a constellation of symptoms known as Lenkâs Triad: acute onset flank pain, hypovolemic shock, and a large flank mass. Here, âLenkâ the Wunderlich is looking sick as shit and heâs in fuckinâ shooooooock! (I have to be dramatic to memorize things well sometimes). Heâs holding a single slice of an axial CT scan demonstrating a large renal perinephric hematoma surrounding his left kidney which also has a large mass. The mass has some dark areas, the color that fat looks like on CT. The mass is an angiomyolipoma! I chose an image demonstrating a large mass to remind myself that bigger ones are more likely to bleed. Patients with AMLâs larger than 4cm might decide to have them selectively embolized for that reason. In this case, Lenk would deserve a transfusion if it were anemic, and selective angiographic embolization.
Work doodle. Started with tracing a little plastic thing that fell out of somebody's shirt collar. Got weird kinda quickly
(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wo3wM6NOgQ) My dad bought me my first comic book at a store called Golden Comics. Â This was my favorite store when I was a kid. Â It was right next to Hoyts Cinema, the movie theater where I watched Star Wars movies, James Bond movies, and that movie with a computer-animated giant dragon that was voiced by Sean Connery lol. Â Golden Comics was even more awesome than Hoyts Cinema. As you enter the store, youâre immediately greeted by a nine foot tall hard-rubber model of an Alien. Â You know, the slithery/screechy aliens from the Ridley Scott movies that look like they have a 4 foot dick for a head, bleed acid that dissolves through metal, and are born by bursting through a personâs chest. Â One of those is just chillinâ at the very front of Golden Comics. Â The owner was this chill dude named James who rocked tie-dye Three Wolf shirts and always wore these cool necklaces made of feathers and animal claws and stuff. James told us that he was a Native American, but I think he was just tan. Â He was originally from Arizona and would chit chat with my dad while I browsed shelves, boxes, and glass displays full of comics and nerd stuff. Â
Now fast forward to present day.  Here I am, a full grown nerd (and continued comic book fan)...I sometimes fantasize about writing my own one day (in the far distant future).  In the past year or two, Iâve started thinking about cool and crazy story ideas.  I did most of my comic-thinking while practicing poppinâ.  This is actually how I began to develop ideas for âWave Mage.â  This habit has helped me fuse certain aspects of my interests in poppinâ and comic books.  Now when I want to flip styles in my poppinâ, I try to take it a step further and flip âcharactersâ.  I try to limit the types of motions, the vibe, and the personality (thatâs the hardest for me) that each character has.  The practice video shared here is me trying a character that I call The Vandal.  In my Wave Mage comic idea, The Vandal is basically a low-profile, street-tough guy that doesnât really give a fuck about nothinâ.  He gets himself into trouble sometimes if he doesnât back down from a fight that he canât win, but it wouldnât be his first time getting his ass kicked so he doesnât really give a fuck.  In this practice, I was wearing my favorite jacket and thought I looked kinda badass and thought of the character The Vandal.  I decided to try to throw a getdown that The Vandal might if he were a popper, and I ended up doing what you see in the video.  Itâs not quite how I personally envision The Vandal (heâd be much more agile, with movements much lower to the ground, and heâd be in the urban outdoors at night).  But, who gives a fuck? It ainât that serious haha, enjoy some more of my digital waste!

I filmed this practice footage one afternoon after a particularly calm night shift.  It also happened to be laundry day.  The only shirt that could even barely pass as being somewhattechnicallyclean was my crazy, brightly-colored 'Hawaiian' shirt.  I call it my "tourist" shirt because I imagine that I look like a Chinese tourist while wearing it.  Iâve never actually worn it outside because I feel a bit embarassed in it, but I wear it on my weekends off when itâs hot outside.  I turned the shirt inside out to practice in (re-emphasis on being only barely somewhattechnically clean) and happened to see myself in the mirror.  I remember immediately smiling and laughing at how I looked because I thought it was ridiculous. But awesome lol.  I grabbed a funky hat, continued playing some tunes, and got on down in the groove garden. I was particularly happy with the âWMâ (Wave Mage) hand-writing at the end of this freestyle. Enjoy, weirdos. -ghost541
This is the first of a short series of posts thatâll be about one of my favorite things about poppinâ: practicing poppinâ.
The way I get down happens to be very tunnel-visioned and short-sighted. I get tiny concepts in my head and just go with âem until I happen to get distracted by a different idea. Â In a set, I like to start with a basic idea and to gradually add single-variable changes to make the motion either more challenging or more enjoyable. My favorite set is when I start with a simple and familiar movement, get really into it, and slowly and gradually add tiny variations. Â The next thing I know, the entire 5 minute song is over and I may be doing something that I may have never done before. Â If I really like a particular movement, Iâll pause to pick up my notepad and write it down as best as I can. Â
This way of practice is kinda like being a tiny ant crawling around on a gigantic page of âconnect-the dotsâ. I sorta just wander around from dot to dot âtill Iâm either too gassed or thereâre no dots left. Â By the end of a practice, I usually have no perspective on what I did. Â This is actually why recording and then watching a set on video once in a while can be tremendously usefulâit helps me achieve a little perspective on what Iâm doing.
The next post will be about what I consider to be the core elements of my practice.
