Common Harry Potterverse misconceptions/frequently asked questions
1. The snake in the zoo was NOT Nagini
2. The baby in SS/PS is NOT the child who plays Albus Severus at the end of DH2
3. Harry using his wand in the beginning of POA was added to the movie for effect and did not happen in the books. Movie mistake.
4. Similarly, Hermione fixing Harry’s glasses in Diagon Alley didn’t happen in the book (Mr Weasley did it). Another movie mistake.
5. There is nothing anywhere to substantiate the claim that Lily was pregnant when she died and that Snape was to be the godfather. Ew. No. Just stop it.
6. We have no actual proof that Draco ripped that page out of the book to give it to Hermione. This did not happen in the book. Draco wanted the “mudbloods” exterminated so he would not have been trying to help Hermione solve the mystery. And the excuse “the Malfoys are rich, he wouldn’t need to tear the page out, he could just buy the book” – Draco is a spoiled brat; he wouldn’t think anything of tearing a page out if he wanted to. He’s shown stealing a gift later in the movies; he’s no angel.

8. There was no accidental “unbreakable vow” made between Snape and Voldemort. The blood protection happened because Lily made a choice and died protecting Harry when she didn’t have to. That is what caused the spell to backfire, not his “promise” to Snape.
9. Dumbledore is not Death. Yes, JK Rowling said she likes the theory, but it’s not how she wrote the series (however we won’t blame you for having that headcanon).
10. Dumbledore HAD to leave Harry with the Dursleys. Yes, it was a horrible situation, but it was the only way to protect Harry because of the blood protection given him by his mother. He HAD to be able to call the Dursleys’ house his home, and that could only happen if the lived there when he was not at Hogwarts.
11. I know I’ll get kickback on this one: The Sorting Hat sorts by TRAITS, not VALUES. The songs and everything in the history of the Hat talk about the traits of students that will determine their placement. If you disagree, you’re gonna need to show CANON evidence to support the values argument (canon means the books, direct quotes from JKR, Pottermore, etc.).
12. Fanfiction is not canon and just because WolfStar is fun doesn’t mean it was real.
13. Also, the word is canon, not cannon. A cannon is used to shoot large metal balls, usually at someone you don’t like. Canon means having to do with the original story
14. JK Rowling never said she regretted putting Ron and Hermione together or that Harry and Hermione should have ended up together. She said she had always wanted Ron and Hermione and wrote them that way as a sort of “wish-fulfillment”. She said they would have most likely had issues as a married couple but that they would probably be fine with some counseling.
15. Harry Potter has blue eyes because Daniel Radcliffe was allergic to the colored contacts. Because they liked him for the role other than that, they decided to roll with it. The girl who played young Lily was also allergic to the colored contacts. Since her role was so small, I’m not sure why they didn’t decided to find a blue-eyed actress, especially since adult Lily has blue eyes, but there we are. And “you have your mother’s eyes” in HP is not referring to just their shape. It was color too.
16. Harry couldn’t see the thestrals before OOTP because he had not seen/processed the deaths that had occurred before then. JKR said Harry did not actually see his mother die, so no thestrals in the first year at Hogwarts. He did not see Quirrell die, as he had passed out before then, so no thestrals the second year. He saw Cedric die at the end of the 4th year, but had not fully processed it by the time they left, so that is why he saw the thestrals for the first time in year 5. (I personally think JKR added that aspect so she wouldn’t have to introduce something like the thestrals at the end of a book lol)
17. There’s literally no canon evidence that draco was right behind Hermione. Lucius said he was ashamed thst even a mudblood beat his pureblood son. Hermione was ahead of EVERYONE. That does not mean he was right behind Hermione in class.
