the fact that Bikini Bottom has such a disregard of the arts is shocking to say the least considering the fact that creativity and imagination is such a driving force for its citizens and one particular yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea. despite these themes of imagination and creativity, there always seems to be a general disdain for everyone’s favorite nihilist, Squidward (who is so obviously coded as black) even though he tries very hard to create a viable space for artists in Bikini Bottom to share ideas, learn from each other, and grow. residents of Bikini Bottom are only interested in the materialistic gains that art can produce (as seen when Spongebob effortlessly creates the Pretty Patties, an extremely risqué and edgy move on his part a la Banksy) that is quite obviously derived from capitalism. this general disdain and lack of appreciation of art springs from the various types of oppression Squidward faces as a queer squid of color (qsoc), and of course because someone as marginalized as Squidward Tentacles takes a large interest in it the mainly white residents of Bikini Bottom would NEVER appreciate those endeavors unless it can add commas to their bank account. let’s not EVEN talk about how Squidward is often forced to conform to Eurocentric beauty ideals, as in the episode where Spongebob, in a very violent way, makes him “beautiful”, which must have a severe affect on his self-worth and image that is thus put back into his own self-portraits. Bikini Bottom is a toxic place for artists, particularly queer artists of color
