as an art historian the wildest take i’ve seen on the gold earrings is that it’s fine to alter them because people in early modern europe altered classical pieces all the time. ummm… there’s LOTS of things that early modern europeans did that are not remotely okay. i don’t think we should be appealing to them for legitimacy to be honest 😭

she cauched it in a faux-woke veneer of “not everything should be in a museum, some things have cultural uses!” which is such a bad faith interpretation, i can’t even… yes some items have legitimate cultural uses, but that’s usually by the people who made the item. first of all, i would argue personally that classical artifacts are inherently divorced from their context because the people who made it no longer exist. but there is a precedent of patrimony, so an ancient iranian artifact should be in be in be in the hands of iranian people, especially if it has a dodgy providence like be earrings. like sure an african mask can be reworn by the people who made it instead of sitting in a museum, for example, but how is that remotely comparable to a jeweler turning objects of unknown significance into diamond earrings for celebrities to wear purely for their aesthetic value?? i find it deeply disturbing that there’s a whole market of altered ancient artifacts as luxury jewelry for the wealthy and famous, and i don’t know how anyone who’s studied art at all could come to a different conclusion.
